Spring Formal This year, the traditional Sweetheart Ball be- came a joint effort of the FHA and FFA. ln former years, this was the pmject of the PHA alone. The two organizations joined to involve more students in one of the main events of the year at PHS. Due to a change in the scheduling of the Spring Formal, its activities were unable to be covered in the yearbook. However, the candidates are pictured and one of these couples became the 1970 Spring Formal king and queen. Since this year's dance was a combination of the former Sweetheart and Barnwariner, it was decided to rename the dance. A contest was held to rename it, the winner receiving free admittance to the dance. Carolyn Ross won the contest with her suggestion of Spring Formal. The activities included giving the candidate the opportunity to prove their ability in certain farming chores. .E 'J SOPHOMORES: Jana ,Taco and Doug Werner. ' JUNIORS: Doug Rozean and jeanine Durham. Linda Brown and Raelene Mehler attended a journalism camp in Manhattan where Raelene picked up many pointers on photogra- phy while Linda learned the techniques of assembling a yearbook and the responsibilities of an editor, In September most of the class attended a seminar in Great Bend where they learned about the principals of layout, theme, and management. 7O Booster Increases Production The other journalism class is comprised of six students who are responsible for producing the school newspaper. Betty Malin, editor, and Raymond Kuhn, co-editor, attended a journalism workshop in Manhattan last june. Betty studied layout where Raymond learned the tricks and short cuts of the newspaper. They put in many long extra hours and much hard work to produce a successful newspaper. This years staff has stepped up production to a newspaper every three weeks on the average. This year's contest was a first in the his- tory of PHS as the battle ended in a tie. Students participating in the event were chosen according to their high academic standing. Representing each class were: Seniors--Doreen Wilhelm and Charlie Wilsong juniors--Dena Keas and Doug Pedersong Sopho- mores--jana jaco and john Brustg and Freshmen--Lori Malin and Mike Tucker. The boys declared victory when time was called with the score 70-65. Doreen Wilhelm presented Charlie Wilson with the trophy and kissed his feet. However, an error was discov- ered later which ended the battle with a tie. Charlie had to return the trophy and kiss Doreen's feet. Thus, 1970 proved to be a year of equality of the sexes. The 1969 Cardinal Football team was headed by Coach Larry Friend. At his second year with PHS he led the team to a winning season with the record of 5 wins 3 losses and 1 tie. This is some- thing to be very proud of for the Cards haven't had a winning team for 5 years! The Burning Desire in which Coach Friend talked so highly of became evident this year. Although the boys had three big losses they fought hard and learned from their mis- takes. With 33 on the A-Squad and 29 on the Fresh. -Soph. Squad the team was made up of leaders, followers, and team spirit in which a winning team needs. Four coaches gave advice, a help- ing hand when needed, and encouragement to the team. All in all the 1969 Cardinal Football Team should be given the highest glory for a great year. 7 Frosh. - Soph. A year filled with excite- ment, encouraging moments, a taste of victory and the despair of de- feat. All these moments will be greatly remembered for years to come. The Homecoming game which was victorious proved to all that the Cardinals have the ability and the willpower to have a winning team which has not been evident for five years. A special token goes to these thirteen seniors who helped make this possible. Long hours, worried mo- ments, and tense situations were all met this past 1969 Football Season.
