To be a suc- cessful cheerleader, it takes an individual who is spirited, hard-working, and athletic said Cheerleader sponsor Jana Mapp. Unknown to many people is the fact that there are both good and bad points of being a cheerleader. It's great because it's a valued position and it gives them a chance to be- come involved in the community. They also learn the meaning of hard work and the im- portance of working together; however, there is more to being a cheerleader than one might realize. It is a very expensive and ex- hausting position, not to mention the fact that it is also very time consuming. Cheerleaders are required to be at every football and basketball game. They also at- tend several baseball games and many other school functions. Then in their spare time , they make posters, plan pep rallies, decorate the halls, and encourage scnool spirit. Varsity Cheerleaders for the 1987-88 school year were Kimmy Crawford, Becki Harris, Melissa White, Mandee Buchanan, Candace Hansford, Kyra Patty, Tamara Hansford, and Cindy Stair. A part of the closing of each pep rally is when the cheerleaders lead the student body in the traditional singing of the school song. 110 — Cheerleaders freshmen Cheerleaders for the 1987-88 school year were Bernice Jimenez, Tammy Curry, Heidi Longanecker, Kena Hamby, Angie Holland, and Shelvia Hearon. The term br.ngs to mind images of covered-wagon days, new frontiers being settled, and a new way of life for those who dared to step out and lead the way. It also best describes the character of Wayland Baptist University, the pioneer of Christian higher education on the Plains of Texas. It’s a heritage that began in 1908, making Wayland the oldest institution of higher learning on the High Plains. And, in the more than three-quarters of a century since its humble beginning Wayland has constantly led the way in the never ending quest for Christian academic excellence. Wayland was, for example, one of the first institutions to admit women and the very first in Texas to voluntarily integrate, doing so in 1951. Wayland’s inter- nationally famous Flying Queens pioneered women’s basketball on the coiiegiate level and have been a national power since 1948. And, through its BSOE degree and numerous off-campus programs, Wayland has pioneered the “nontraditional†approach to adult education. It’s no wonder, then, that the Pioneer is the official mascot of the university—the symbol of the “Wayland way†of Christian higher education. There’s a strong sense of pnde that goes with a “pioneering spirit—in knowing that you took the dare so that others might follow. The spirit, the tradition, the special way of life—they’re all a part of what makes Wayland unique. We want to share that uniqueness with you. Just give us a call—we’re waiting to tell you why we call Wayland “The Pnde of the Plains,†and what we think is so special about THAT PIONEER PRIDE The Pride of The Plains D WAylANd BApTiST UNiVERSiTy Plain view, TX 79072 (806) 296-5521 208 — Advertising V) VO IT) K N X N vo Qj N ' VO v _ N N i o o £ oo oo ?5 o • “O a 5 a feb o c o Q 0 P U ) -C c - 5 s ’• it c O S5 C c: ID © Q Advertising — 209 « Modical Supplies Home Health Care Produets Durable Medical Equipment Respiratory Care Items Edgemere Pharmacy and Medical Supply Rental and Sales Tom Ad ay, R.Ph. As Editor It cannot possibly be a year since we started work on this yearbook! What a year it has been. I learned a lot about myself and about being an editor; I learned where my strengths and weaknesses lie; I learned to scream; I learned that each of us is important and has something to give. This book means a lot to me. It is a team effort and I want to thank each of you on that team. You were a great staff and I appreciate each of you more than you will ever know. Robert and Company of Lance and Lance . .. you did a fantastic job on photography. Now we have proof that you really did work in that little 'ole dark room. Mecca, you were terrific? You were always willing to do a little extra. Nikki, you were super efficient as business manager. You may have found your calling in life. Veronica, Theresa, Kim, Melissa, Jerri ... you were Jills of all trades. Without all the typing and checking and typing and alphabetizing and typing, we could STILL be typing and checking. This is OUR book and we should be very proud of it. Sometimes there is someone who takes the time to let you (or make you) do things that would be so much easier to do herself; someone who cares enough to let you make decisions and learn by trial and error. A special hug and thank you to that someone, Nancy Robinson, our sponsor. You taught me a lot and I treasure your friendship. This book is dedicated to those of you, like me, who believe in reaching for dreams .. . sharing laughter . . seeing the significant in the ordinary. Memories are a gift; the memories in this year in the life of each of us is my gift to you. ENJOY ... TIFFANY GABRIEL 1987-88 Editor-in-Chief A ckn o wle dgem ents The 1988 Plain View staff would like to thank the following for all their help and support this year. Don's Photography for choir, coronation and prom group pictures and the special four color cover photograph; the Plainview Daily Herald for photos; Koen's Photography for sports group pic- tures; Miss Cynthia Gregory for her photos; Chris Hooten for sports pictures; Jim Pressley for taking some of our pictures and the use of his pictures; Gordon Zeigler for photos; Helen Hogge and the administration and faculty for all your support and cooperation and to Jerry Clark, the Taylor Pub- lishing Company representative, who helped make all this possible. And, a special thank you to Marcheta Gabriel for her valuable assistance with photography, typing and indexing throughout the year. Thanks to all once again. 232 — Editor's Final Words Plain View Staff and Specifications Editor-in-Chief: Tiffany Gabriel Business Manager: Nikki Gebo Photo Editor Robert Igo Clubs Editor: Veronica Vera Student Life Editor: Kim Cecil Classes Editor: Jerri Sherley Sports Editor: Mecca Howard Advertising Editor: I heresa Reynolds Photographers: Shawn Hincn, Lance Norrell, Lance Cline, Dale Haralson, Paul Henderson, Brandi Smith, John Oates, Melissa Cline.
