From the first pep rally and football game in the fall to the last dance in the spring, Council members and their sponsor, Mrs. Sandra Williams, can be seen coordinating a wide varie- ty of activities. Noteworthy Council-sponsored activities this year in- cluded, among many other things, a homecoming recep- tion for PHS exes in the foyer of the gym, a turkey walk at Christmas for the American Heart Association, valogram and carnation sales as well as the annual teacher Olympics in February, and the awarding of two $500 scholarships. The weather was good, hall-decoration and other Homecom- ing activities were well received and most important of all, the Angry Red defeated Lubbock High 33-13 in the Homecoming game October 22! It was a good week topped off with a Homecoming dance in the cafeteria after the game. Under the leadership of their new director, Ron Lange, the Acappella Choir had a major role in this year’s musical, Camelot, which was performed December 6 and 7. In February the Acappella Choir combined talents with the Plainview Symphony Orchestra for a concert in the PHS auditorium. The Choir’s portion of the program, entitled, “An Evening on Broadway,’’ featured choruses and solos from broadway productions of recent years. In March the Acappella Choir came away from a U.I.L. meet in Lubbock with one first divi- sion rating and two second division ratings. Later in the spring the group received straight “Ts” when they performed at the Six Flags Choir Festival at Astro World in Houston. Under the direction of PHS’s new Drama teacher, Lisa Watkins, the production saw the talents of several Fine Arts Department areas combined into one production. New Choir Director Ron Lange coordinated the vocal aspects of the show, while Lisa Watkins attended to dramatic production. Art Department students under the direction of Terri Beth Dillard helped with the backdrops, while orchestration of the music was under the direction of Band Director 0. T. Ryan and his assistants. Then there are those delightful May days when seniors aren’t required to go to classes but, rather, spend their mornings involved in graduation practice and their afternoons at the lake of wherever. Finally, when the big day comes, frivolity is replaced by solemnity for a time as seniors assemble with their life-long classmates for what will be the last time in many cases, to get their diplomas. As in the recent past, this year’s graduation ceremony was held in the First Baptist Church. There were 325 graduates and as many tears and shouts of relief as usual when the May 26 ceremony was over. At right, graduating seniors pour out of the FHS auditorium ahead of their less privileged classmates at the End of School Assembly May 17. The team’s overpowering poten- tial left their opponents in shock. Showing all their talent, the Bulldogs won their first five games, hands down. After suffer- ing a staggering blow from Hereford, the Angry Red rallied to win the remaining regular season games. After upsetting first place Monterey and the surprising loss of Hereford to Coronado, the Bulldogs pulled out of the three-way district tie. Claiming first place in district, the Bulldogs traveled to San Angelo for the Bi-District bout. Even though San Angelo was a disappointing loss, at home the Bulldogs remained No. 1 in the hearts and minds of loyal fans and at Plainview High. STARTING AT THE TOP . . . Starting their season off against Estacado, the Bulldogs displayed outstanding talent both offen- sively and defensively. Randy Williams broke the school record by returning a punt 95 yards for the touchdown. The Bulldogs won 14-0. Traveling to Amarillo to play Tascosa, the Angry Red Dot was red-hot for action. With only 11 ball carries the Bulldogs rolled up 303 yards and their biggest offensive scoring game in 25 years. The Rebels fought for their last scores against the Angry Red’s third and fourth strings. The final score saw a 55-28 victory for the Angry Red. After an open week, the awesome Angry Red found itself up against the Palo Duro Dons. Plain- view beat Palo Duro 28-7, and they stood second to Monterey when the Plainsmen toppled the Herd. The Big Red Wall turned out to be an impor- tant asset once more, as the Bulldogs blew away the Sandies 36-13. That night another school record was set when Moises Castillo put a 42 yard field goal through the uprights. The Plain- view Bulldogs were on an unmerciful rampage and no one could stop them. 100 OPP. The Angry Red offense burst out with one of its most impressive shows of the season against Lubbock Coronado. The Mustangs really had no chance, considering that the Bulldogs totaled 341 yards on the ground and 449 yards in all at the end of the game. The Bulldogs came out on top, 35-7. The devastating blow of the season came when the Angry Red were abruptly shocked by the Hereford Whitefaces. Tension and spirit in- tensely set in throughout the day as both teams prepared themselves for the showdown. The game turned out to be everything it was ex- pected to be; only the Bulldogs lost, 14-21. At Homecoming the Angry Red made up for the loss, and rocketed through the Westerners with little problem. The whole game was dominated with solid Angry Red plays that left the score 33-13. At right, Randy Williams dances his way through a clut- tered Hereford field. PROVING TO BE THE BEST Going into the game against Monterey, everyone was filled with anticipation. Thanks to well-trained runners and Steve George’s passing talents, the Bulldogs trampled the Plainsmen 280. Thursday, November 4, Hereford traveled to Lubbock eager to demolish Coronado. The Mustangs had other plans — to wipe out the Herd. Hereford’s defeat secured the first place title for Plainview, leaving Monterey in second. That Friday, the Bulldogs displayed remarkable control in preparation for the Caprock game. This control paid off when the starters found themselves warming the bench and the score at the end of the game turned out to be 37-6 in favor of the Angry Red. The Bi-District bout was the climax of the season as the Bulldogs took on San Angelo Cen- tral in San Angelo. The fighting Bulldogs were cheered by their loyal fans, who backed them all the way. It seemed the Bobcats found a weakness in the Angry Red game plan — fumbles. The Bi-District title belonged to San Angelo with the final score 15-20. There were some bright spots, however. The Blue team defeated Tascosa 7-6 and tied a game 6-6 with Coronado and the Red team defeated both Monterey and Tascosa with scores of 12-6 and 16-12 respectively. Playing in the Pioneer Classic, the Angry Red fell to powerhouses Clovis, Midland, Dim- mitt and Borger. Clovis seemed to be an unstopable force. Midland was district-ranked in their season and Dimmitt, which claimed last year’s state title, had three returning starters. On the other hand, the Bulldogs swept away Tulia and Dumas, while edging by Hereford and Amarillo High. Kenneth Hallman’s winning last second shot from mid-court in the second over- time brought everyone to their feet in the Amarillo High game. DEDICATING THEIR ALL The Bulldogs continued to play well and by mid-season, had given up district games only to Tascosa and Caprock. They scored well even against these tall defensive lines. In the Hobbs Tournament the Bulldogs found themselves dominated by Hobbs, John Jay and Abilene. Winning the following four district games, the Angry Red restored their confidence in games against Monterey, Coronado, Palo Duro and Lubbock High. Once again, Kenneth Hallman upset the Amarillo Sandies in the last seconds with a clutch shot from mid-court, thereby winn- ing the game. In the second match with Monterey, Gil Wright broke the school record with the most points any player has made in his varsity career. After the unexpected loss to Palo Duro, the district title lay on the line as the Bulldogs met with the Caprock Longhorns for the deciding bout. The Angry Red took control at the start of the game and never gave it up, winning the game 66-52. The Caprock victory brought the Bulldogs up against San Angelo Central for the bi-district ti- tle. The Bulldogs proved their talent as fierce fighters by keeping the Bobcats on their toes. In the end, however, the Bobcats came out on top 79-73. After beating Lubbock and Caprock, the Dogs traveled to Hereford to beat their arch-rival with the best shooting performance of the year. The Bulldogs totally dominated Amarillo and Tascosa after having initially gotten a taste of the district lead with a defeat of Monterey. Cor- onado and Palo Duro also found themselves distressed at the overwhelming power of the Bulldogs. Penney Company 425 Broadway Plainview, TX 79072 The TV is my shepherd, My spiritual growth shall want. It maketh me to sit down and do nothing for His name’s sake, Because it requireth all my spare time. It keepeth me from doing my duty as a Christian, Because it presenteth so many good shows that I must see. It restoreth my knowledge of the things of the world And keepeth me from the study of God’s Word. It leadeth me in the paths of apathy And doing nothing in the Kingdom of God. It presenteth entertainment before me, And keepeth me from doing important things with my family. It filleth my head with ideas, Which differ from those set forth in the Word of God. Surely, no good thing will come of my life, Because my TV leaveth so little time to do the Will of God. Thus I will dwell in the house of idleness . . . And sloth forever.
