These included a leadership workshop for all new of- ficers, two blood drives, school elections, dances, the teacher Olympics, valograms, a canned food drive and a can-can dance. The Council also operated the candy store and the concession stand for a twirling contest, spon- sored a safety program for Edgemere Elementary School and a Turkey walk for the Heart Association. Executive Council members attended a summer workshop before school began and an annual state convention later in the fall. Sophomore Shelli Estep receives a carnation from an admirer on Valentine’s Day. Carnations were one of two kinds of valograms students could send to one another. Joe Baker gives a pint of blood during one of two blood drives sponsored by the Executive Council. 57 58 Diana Hayes and Brenda Hall were escorted to center field by their fathers where they were crowned by the Executive Council members. Head Coach Greg Sherwood gives a pep talk to the fans and players during the Homecoming pep rally. Brenda Hall and Diana excitedly reign over the re- mainder of the Homecoming game after being crowned at half-time. 60 Homecoming 1981 — an event to forget The 1981 Homecoming week got off to a bad start and steadily got worse! At the beginning of the week the annual hall decorating contest was held. On the morning of the judging, everyone arrived at school only to find that the senior hall had not been decorated. The senior class president was extremely upset and he and some others decorated the hall that night. A bonfire was also scheduled and rescheduled (because of the weather), before it was finally cancelled altogether. Since the weather was so bad and there was no bonfire, the car caravan was also cancelled. To top everything off, the Bulldogs lost the Homecoming game to the Carlsbad Cavemen! Pom-poms fly into the air as the cheerleaders conclude the final verse of the school song during the Homecom- ing pep rally. 61 Student Council President Stan Sherwood crowns Queen Diana Hayes during the Coronation ceremony. Lady Allyson Quinby pauses before curtseying to Lord Scotty Hill. 62 Coronation 1981 — FHS crowns a queen On Friday, October 23, in the PHS auditorium, at precisely 8 p.m., a stillness overcomes the audience as the Coronation ceremony begins. The emcees, Malcolm Cundiff and D’Lea Perry, an- nounce each couple — the lords and ladies — as they enter the stage area. While the couples bow and curt- sey, Mary Frank Owen plays soft organ music. After the lords and ladies are in their places, Princess Brenda Hall is escorted to the stage by Thomas Rios. Then, the moment everyone has been waiting for ar- rives. As heralds trumpet from the balcony, Princess Diana Hayes makes her way down the aisle, assisted by her pages, Christie Bentley, Susan Castleberry, Melissa Dorman and Valinda Hess. When Queen Diana is on the stage she is crowned by Student Council President Stan Sherwood. She then receives a sceptor by Senior Class President David Higdon. Following an inspirational speech by the Queen, Choir Director Danny White provides entertainment with a beautiful solo. A party for all Coronation participants follows the ceremony. The party is at the Plainview Country Club and is sponsored by senior parents. The Coronation was directed by Mrs. Betty McGhee and Senior Dean, Dale Smith. Coronation co-director, Mrs. Betty McGhee, thanks the seniors for a gift of appreciation given her during the ceremony. At the close of the Coronation, all participants sing the school song and hold their Angry Red “ 1V’ up to show their loyalty to PHS. 63 Varsity Cheerleaders compliment winning PHS teams The year of cheerleading started for the six varsity girls in April 1981 after tryouts and elections. The girls had approximately one month to get ready for the High Plains Cheerleading School which started the second week in June. The camp at Lubbock Christian College was sponsored by the National Cheerleading Association (NCA). The girls did very well, winning seven superior ribbons, the spirit stick each day and competed in the Award of Excellence the last day of competition. After returning home, the girls had their own cheerleading camp in August. This camp was for 7th, 8th, freshman and JV cheerleaders. Ryan’s bands have been outstanding. This year was no exception. The Symphonic Band, under his direction, grabbed the Sweepstakes Award at the UIL contest with four “l’s.” The Concert Band, under the direction of Jerry Killion and the Second Concert Band under the direction of J. W. King also made credible showings at contest. Above. Symphonic Band member Jeanne Hogge was named All State Bassoonist this year. These are the PHS Singers, the Chorale, the Chamber Singers and the A’Cappella Choir. In the fall the choirs, at the direction of Direc- tor, Danny White, performed the musical, “The Rainmaker,” which was well-received by its audiences. Winter saw UIL contests, with six PHS choristers being named to the All-Region Choir and two to the All-State Choir later. Springtime saw plans being made for the choir trip to Atlanta, Georgia in early May and then the Red, White and Blue Review in mid-May. It was a fun year to be in choir! All-State choir members this year are (at right) Walter Taylor and Karen Wason. All-Region choir members are (below), first row, from left, Doug Wells, Julie Harman and Karen Wason. Second row, Peri Long, librarian and Kari Tuttle, president. 87 ‘110 in the Shade’ showcase for talents of PHS songsters The PHS Choral Department’s production of “110 in the Shade,” otherwise known as “The Rainmaker,” represented the highlight of their fall activities. Performed November 16 and 17 in the auditorium before large crowds, the musical was, by all standards, a success. The main characters in the production were Starbuck, played by Walter Taylor, Lizzie Curry, played by Marla Leach, and Noah, Pop and Jim- my Curry, played by Craig Etheredge, Keith Bryant and Mike Cannon respectively. Other performers included Doug Wells who played File, the sheriff, and LaFondra Norrell who played Snookie. Numerous other members of PHS’s choirs were included in the chorus. The Currys — Noah, Pop and Jimmy — played by, from left, Craig Etheridge, Keith Bryant and Mike Cannon belt out a song during the Choral Department’s fall production of “110 in the Shade.” Noah Curry, played by Craig Etheredge, left, voices skepticism about Starbuck’s (Walter Taylor, center) ability to make rain. Looking on are Pop Curry (Keith Bryant) and Jimmy Curry (Mike Cannon). 88 Jimmy Curry (Mike Cannon) gets a close look at some of Starbuck’s (Walter Taylor) snake oil after the travelling medicine man rolls into town. At left and above, affection-starved Lizzie Curry (Marla Leach) succumbs to smooth-talking Starbuck’s (Walter Taylor’s) line, one step at the time. 89 Choristers ‘Raise A Rukus’ with Red, White and Blue Revue The Choir Department’s annual talent show, the Red, White and Blue Revue, maintained again this year the high degree of talent and pro- fessionalism the school and the community have come to expect. With a theme of “Raise A Rukus Tonight”, the two-hour-long extravaganza was performed May 10 and 11 before large audiences. Highlights of the show included a number of songs by talented seniors Marla Leach and Walter Taylor, as well as skits, modern dance pieces and songs by the PHS Chorus and the A’Cappella Choir. 90 Above, left, Buff Adams dances, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”. Above right, Walter Taylor and Marla Leach captivate the audience with their rendition of “Just When I Thought”. Lower left, Mona Bryant sings, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. Lower right, Kelly Murry says, “She’s Got Away” in his song. ‘Snow White’ hit with little kids The Drama Department's production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” December 9-11 represented this year’s children’s Christmas show — a tradition with the Department. PHS’ers had a preview of the show December 9 with a paid assembly. On December 10 and 11 elementary and kindergarten students from throughout Plainview were brought to the high school to see the performance. It was a big hit with them all. At right, the witch, Hex, (Julie Watson) and two of her cats, Cindy Green, left, and Rico Rey, stir up a brew in the witch’s cottage. Below, Prince Charming (Thad Car- thel) places the ring on Snow White’s (Karina Jester’s) finger as dwarves Bashful (Becky Dunn, far left) and Grumpy (Colin Miller) look on. 92 The cast waves goodbye to the kids in the audience — from left. Snow White (Karina Jester), Doc (Mark White), Happy (Jerry Cargill), Sleepy (Rodney White), Bashful (Becky Dunn) and Grumpy (Colin Miller) wave to their young admirers at the end of a performance for first graders. Below, at left, Sleepy (Rodney White) discovers Snow White (Karina Jester) asleep in his bed. 93 ‘Charley’s Aunt’ captivates school “Charley’s Aunt,” a classical British comedy of mistaken identity by Brandon Thomas, was produced February 8 and 9 by the PHS Drama Department. Following its popular two-night run in the PHS auditorium, “Charley’s Aunt” was taken to Eastern New Mexico University to be aired at a play festival there February 27 and 28. The cast received a “Superior” rating at the festival. The plot of Charley’s Aunt centers about the at- tempts of a young man, Babbs, to pose as a woman (Charley’s aunt) so that Charley and Jack, two of his friends, might have the opportunity to propose to two young women, Amy and Kitty. The adventures and misadventures of Babbs, who cavorts about the stage dressed in 19th century women’s clothing, make for many laughs. At left, and from left, Amy Spettigue, played by Julie Watson, Kitty Verdon (Faith Harding), Fancourt Babber- ly (Bryan Houlette), Jack Chesney (Malcolm Cundiff) and Charley Wickham (Rico Rey) get acquainted with one another early on in the play. Below, Ella Delahay (Becky Dunn) and Lucia D’Alvadorez (Jana Posey) reminisce about lost loves. 94 Upper right, Charley’s aunt is revealed — Lord Fancourt Bab- berly (Bryan Houlett), center, shucks his disguise, to the amuse- ment of Jack Chesney (Malcolm Cundiff), left, and Charley Wickham (Rico Rey). At left, Charley Wickham (Rico Rey) and Jack Chesney (Malcolm Cundiff), right, discuss how best to get their girl friends to come to tea. Immediately above, Mr. Spet- tigue (Gregg Harding), seated, Kitty Verdun (Faith Harding), Lord Fancourt Babberly (Bryan Houlette) and Jack Chesney (Malcolm Cundiff) discuss marriage plans of Jack and Kitty. 95 Presentation 1982 highlights PHS’s best A tradition was upheld at PHS again this year with the Presentation Ceremony. Sponsored by the yearbook as in past years, the affair was held in the auditorium on the evening of April 22. Some 45 class favorites and runners-up, who’s who nominees and of course, best all- around and LaVerne Roach recipients, were presented to the larger-than-usual audience. The late LaVerne Roach’s mother, Mrs. S. J. Roach, was a guest of honor at the ceremony, as in past years. The stage backdrop represented this year’s Plain View cover, based on the theme of “Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining.” Below, Randy Dorsey, right, receives LaVerne Roach Award from Carey Eaves of the Plainview Lions Club. Lower center, Joe Horne, left, receives the Who’s Who Award in Math from Mrs. Jane Berry. The senior address was given by honor graduate Joe Horne. Fellow graduating senior David Higdon had given the invocation at the beginning of the ceremony. Following announcement of scholarship winners by PHS Principal Jerry Don George and presentation of diplomas by Plainview Independent School District Board of Education President Bill Hayes, the Class of 1982 sang the traditionally emotional farewell version of their school song and then trekked down the aisles and out of the church amidst the cheers and tears and con- gratulations of onlookers, family members and friends. The motto of the 1982 graduating class was “Make Tomorrow’s Memories Now’’. Class colors were red and gold. Their flower was the red rose and their class song was “You’ll Never Walk Alone’’. As graduation ceremonies ended and seniors scurried away for an after-graduation party at the Hale County Agriculture Center, shafts of late evening sunlight began to break through banks of dissipating storm clouds to the west of Plainview. A fittingly upbeat symbolic gesture as 345 PHS seniors embarked on the new and uncharted waters of adult life. 110 Ill 112 There’ll be a party in town tonight! The loyalty of the fans and the spirit of the Dogs isn’t found in every school. Overall, the Bulldogs were victorious, winning seven of their ten games. In district play, also, they were, for the most part, victorious, with only one loss. Their traditional rival, Monterey, was defeated 14-13. Estacado, Tascosa, Amarillo High, Clovis, Coronado and Lubbock High were also defeated. The Bulldogs’ three losses were to Midland Lee, Carlsbad (Homecoming), and Hereford. Each game was preceded with pep rallies, ribbons, and cheerleading. The traditional car caravan led out the Homecoming festivities, although the bon fire was cancelled due to bad weather. Yes, overall, the season was a good one. Of course, it had its problems (as all things do), but together, the fans and team battled it out. Below, fans of the Angry Red display a variety of reactions at a home game. Luthez Thompson (20) attempts to ward off a Midland Lee player while Greg Carter (25) breaks away. The first game of the season, against the 8th ranked Mats, ended in a 7-0 victory for the Plainview Bulldogs. An hour before kick-off, a torrential downpour hit Bulldog stadium, gradually subsiding to a steady drizzle, and this, coupled with an opportune Plainview defense, slowed the fleet-footed Matadors. The win evened the score between Estacado and Plainview, bringing it to six wins apiece in recent years. The next game was on the road, against the Tascosa Rebels. The Angry Red pushed past Tascosa to seize a 39-12 win, with the first 20 points earned in the first half. Three Plainview starters were injured in the game, however, with quarterback Steve George reinjuring the same leg he had hurt in the Palo Duro scrimmage. Also, Thomas Rios suffered a hand injury, and Randy Dorsey went down with an ankle sprain. The Bulldogs did win, however, bringing their seasonal mark to 2-0. The first game of the year to be lost was against Midland Lee, with Midland grabbing 33 points and Plainview 7. The only touchdown of the game for Plainview was made by Tim Coleman, who finished with 126 yards and 28 carries. He moved onto the first team earlier in the week when Jerry Cargill reinjured his knee. The Bulldogs made the first score allowed by the Rebels all season, and Midland Lee lived up to its reputation for a big play offense. At left, David Pena (52), Thomas Rios (77), and another Bulldog teammate enjoy a few moments break. 120 DOGS WHIP TASCOSA Steve Williams addresses the school body with words of in- spiration at a fall pep rally. The date Sept. 25, the score 17-7, the victor Plainview. The fourth game of the 1981 season, against the Amarillo Sandies, ended victoriously for the Angry Red. Both touchdowns were made by Quennoth Dunlap, and a 25 yard field goal by Harold King added three more points. The Sandies ventured to the Plainview side just once, making their only touchdown in process. At the end of the game, the Bulldogs stood 3-1 for the year. Another victory for the Plainview Bulldogs came against the Clovis Wildcats. Plainview stole the show with a score of 10-0. The Plainview defense became known as the “Big Red Wall’’ as they held the highly acclaimed Wildcats to a mere 2.8 yards per carry. The Wildcats came in with a 4-0 record and left with a 4-1, tying the Bulldogs’ seasonal record. Greg Carter charges by a group of Clovis opponents. The Angry Red football team once again join hands and stand together at the end of the game. 121 HOMECOMING GAME LOST 7-14 October 9, Homecoming, 1981. The Bulldogs lost the game by a margin of one touchdown, and Carlsbad won with a final score of 14-7. The game did have its highlights, though. Biff Billingsly pounced on his first fumble recovery of the year, and Luthez Thompson had his best game of the season, rushing for 47 yds. The Bulldogs did lose, however, and stood 4-2 for the season at the end of the game. The first district game for the Bulldogs, against the Hereford Whitefaces, won’t be easily forgotten. The game was lost with a 9-6 score, and a new arch rival resulted from the game. After an “H” was found burned onto the Bulldog stadium field, and several rumors started about certain things the Whitefaces had said, the Bulldogs transformed once more into the Angry Red. With one of the finest shows of loyalty, the school banded together to stand firmly behind its team. The Bulldogs lost, but not from lack of effort. The win meant a great deal to Hereford who hadn’t beaten Plainview since 1975. the Cavemen “Dump the Cavemen.” This sign apparently sums it all up concerning the Angry Red’s intention in the Carlsbad Homecoming game. Peter Vera (66) carries the football with a fierceness that characterizes the Angry Red. (Inset) Stan Sherwood turns bashful at th pre-game pep rally. 122 The district game between Monterey and Plainview resulted in a 14-13 win for the Bulldogs. The first touchdown was made by Monterey in the second quarter. With the score 0-7, the Bulldogs finally got moving with 3:10 left in the half to tie the score. The game continued, the ball being battled back and forth until the Bulldogs stretched ahead with a one point lead to win the game. The Bulldogs then stood with a 1-1 district record and a 5-3 seasonal record. Another victorious game for the Bulldogs, against the Coronado Mustangs, ended with the score 27-6. The victory pushed Plainview to a 6-3 seasonal and a 2-1 district record. After a 12-0 halftime lead, and 15 additional points in the second half, the Mustangs lost to the Angry Red for the eighth straight year. To wind the season up right, the Bulldogs surged past Lubbock High with a 28-0 victory. Tim Coleman had the 17th best single game rushing performance in PHS history as he rambled away for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and Greg Sherwood became the winningest coach in PHS history.
