V . V « - Plain view High School Plain view, Texas Jgft Volume 67 Angie Bye Editor-in-Chief Grant Haynes Advisor Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answers. Rainer Maria Rilke Translated by M. D. Herter Norton Letters to «i Young l 1954 W W. Norton Company, Inc. Used by permission. Who Am I? Each student is an individual searching for his own identity. Questions challenge him during his high school years. With the help of teachers and friends, the answers gradually come and the student discovers that he really is a special person. 4 What is my role? The qualities and talents of many individuals combine to form Plain view High. Each activity gives students an opportunity to support their school, and at the same time to discover a little more about themselves. What will I be? Plainview High School offers numerous opportunities for students to explore special skills and talents. Decisions made during high school affect the student's future course in life. Many questions are answered during the brief high school experience but the continuing search for life's solutions is really only beginning. 9 Where can I find the answers? As the student lives each day, he discovers that he is finding answers all the time without realizing it. The problems and obstacles of yesterday become the accomplishments of today. By seeking, preparing, and, most importantly, living, the student gradually finds the answers in his life. 10 12 Live the questions now Board moves toward five-year goals Following several especially busy years which saw construction of the new Coronado Seventh Grade Learning Center, renovation of a number of other facilities and a restructuring of high school graduation requirements, members of the Plair view Independent School District Board of Education spent much of the 1980-81 school year administering programs already in progress. The Board continues to work toward fulfillment of goals established two years ago in a five-year plan that follows guidelines set by the Texas Education Agency for the District at that time. These goals include a strengthening of programs in the basics—reading, writing and arithmetic—and a stronger emphasis on academics in general. Excitement builds and the pace of activities increases throughout Homecom- ing week. This year Homecoming activities included a victory chain, Beat Monterey Day ' Warm-Up To Victory Day ' Mask Monterey Day, two pep rallies, a hall decoration contest, a car caravan, and, of course, the bonfire. Homecoming was made complete on Halloween night, October 31, when Queen Mica Williams and Princess Felica Tipton were crowned, followed by a victory over the Monterey Plainsmen. Following the Monterey game, a dance sponsored by the Student Council was held in the PHS cafeteria. It is a pleasure to represent a school that has so much pride, spirit and dedication. There is a very special emotion a cheerleader feels in leading the student body in this traditional cheer and we hope that this will always be the spirit of PHS. TOGETHER WE FIGHT, TOGETHER WE WIN, BULLDOGS VICTORIOUS, NEVER GIVE IN! 41 The 1980-81 Varsity Cheerleaders are, from left, (FRONT) Diana Hayes, (REAR) Lori Kemp and Jill Bradley. Georgia Hodges, Jayne Eudy, (MIDDLE) Mica Williams, 42 Varsity Cheerleaders win highest honor The Coca-Cola USA Spirit Award was awarded the 1980-81 Plainview High School Varsity Cheerleaders when over 350 fellow cheerleaders at cheerleading camp chose them as the most spirited squad. In addition to this coveted prize, the varsity came away with five spirit sticks during the week. They were also chosen to compete for the Award of Excellence by the National Cheerleading Association Staff. This is only the second time in PHS history that a cheerleading squad has received such honors. Cheerleading Sponsor Judy Buchanan checks the cheerleading supplies for the upcoming year. Four Varsity Cheerleaders show off their NCA Awards. Diana Hayes holds two superior ribbons while Jill Bradley blows her whistle. Lori Kemp clowns with the NCA spirit megaphone and Jayne Eudy proudly displays an Award of Excellence certificate. 43 FRESHMAN CHEERLEADERS Liz Hart Josie Arrizola Nickie Harris Sonya Snelling Leah Kay Lyle Tracy Wheeler Connie Yarbrough Gina Reed 44 JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS LaDonna Johnson Krystal Gaylor Rosa Barrera Terri Johnson Lori Griffith Lisa Nolan Ginger Billington Kaci Wofford Student Council sparks Bulldog spirit Student Council officers are, (L-R) Steve Thompson, (President); Nancy Hayes, (Secretary); Stan Sherwood, (Vice President); Susanne Rogers, (Treasurer); Brooks Terrell, (Chaplain); Lisa Guy, (Assistant Treasurer); Brent Hackett, (Parliamentarian). The Student Council, which was elected last spring to represent the student body, has sponsored many activities throughout the school year. Events included an annual blood drive, all school dances. Student Council sponsored elections, car caravans, bonfires, operation of the candy store, spirit awards, and a Dinner Theatre—the first in PHS history. At the close of the school year the Student Council reviewed their accomplishments and felt they had done a good job of leadership for the 1980-81 school year. Steve Thompson and Jayne Eudy pig out at a student council sponsored brunch for Hereford's student council after a basketball game. 46 Diana Hayes reclines after giving blood at the Student Council sponsored blood drive. The staffers began selling subscrip- tions in late August and the sale of ads continued during the first of the school year. A theme was developed and a book slowly began to take shape. Included are many carefully chosen activity shots to complete the record of a year. Hopefully, the Plain View '81 staff has succeeded in creating a book filled with memories to be treasured for years to come. This is accomplished through features, news, sports, editorials, and cartoons as well as fine arts material and expressions of student opinions. The Barker is published on a monthly basis and is available to PHS students in the cafeteria on delivery dates. 53 The Publications club had its spring meeting with guest and Sabra Coy sit tight and listen intently, speaker Gary Ott. Publication members Susanne Rodgers Manuel Gonzales and Mack Yates look over their section to use some pointers given at the last Publications 54 meeting. Mack Yates shows his stuff at the annual Publication Christmas party held this year at the home of Ann Rice. Publications adds 'extra something' The Publications Club, made up of staffers of the school paper, THE BULLDOG BARKER, and the yearbook, the PLAINVIEW, has been programmed to add an extra something to the learning experience of scholastic publications. During the year, the club studied different aspects of the communications field, concentrating this year on newspapers. Socials were combined with the meetings, and guest speakers were featured. Officers are Ann Rice, president; Carolyn Cook, vice-president; Beatris Vega, treasurer; and Mack Yates, secretary. Joe Stafford types, types, and retypes his editorial for the upcoming Bulldog Barker. Choir Is . . . Happy times. Being able to laugh at yourself. It's coming to grips with others. Being able to wrap your arms around a fellow choir member in a gesture of unity without being ridiculed. We all have our own private jokes, and the friendships formed are as genuine as gold. Initiation: Waking up at 3:00 in the morning standing in the middle of M-System, in your jammies. Having to wear a long torn up robe while everyone asks you what the A stands for. As if they didn't know! Serenading strangers in all-night cafes. In sleepers, no less! Concerts: The jitters, hairbrushes, mirrors, tuxedos, dresses, everything in place. Then, performance! An encouraging look from Danny, a look of pride. Tears: Having a second family to come to when you need help. Loving each other as you do a brother or a sister. Sharing a sad situation, having a shoulder to cry on. Choir is this and so much more. It's hidden, unspoken. It's the things that you will always remember in future years. 56 PHS Singers include (FRONT ROW) Connie Yarbrough, Liz Hart, Christy Wilds, Lon Pierson, Norman Bearden, Richard Stanley, Mark Seago, Tammy Thorton, Susan Devela, Shelly Bedwell, Renee Hall, Director Danny White. The top group, made up of mostly juniors and seniors is the A'Cappella. A girls choral choir was formed this year. The freshman choir is called PHS Singers. The fourth group is a concert rock group known as the Chamber Singers. The first choral performance was the annual Fall Concert. December saw a Christmas Concert. The musical, 'Bye, Bye Birdie, was to be presented in early February, but the musical plans were abandoned when the leading lady injured her shoulder two weeks before opening night. March brought concerts— everything from All-Region, All-Area, and All-State concerts to UIL solo and ensemble and sightreading concerts. To reward the choir members for all their many hours of work, the A'Cappella choir took a tour to Tempe, Arizona in late April. May brought the successful Red, White and Blue Review and also graduation. The year 1980-81 was a busy but rewarding one for the Choir Department. A'Cappella Officers are doing what they do best, WORK. And hard at that! The officers are as follow; Rudy Lopez, (Reporter); JoAnn Tullis, (President); LaFonda Norrell, (Vice-President); Tracey Wllingsford, (Librarian); Georgia Hodges, (Publicity Chairman) Mona Bryant, (Robe Chairman) and D'Linda Taylor, (Treasurer). 61 All-Area, All-Region, All-State Choir members include Walter Taylor, Karen Wason and David Kelly. (Right) Brer Bear, played by Joe Stafford, gets into a sticky situation. Marie Hooper as Miss Meadow (right) and Pam Willborn as Miss Goose inquire the whereabouts of Brer Rabbit. Livin 'de Life The PHS drama department completed a three-day run with the children's show Livin 'de Life . The cast did a total of four shows for the elementary students of Plain view plus a paid assembly for the student body. The children's show is one of the funniest things we do all year, said PHS drama director Deborah Canterberry. It's really gratifying to hear the laughter of these kids because you know they really appreciate the show. The part of Brer Rabbit was done by Brian Houlette, with the parts of Brer Bear and Brer Fox done by Joe Stafford and Malcolm Cundiff, respectively. Other characters included Aunt Mammy-Bammy, played by Scott Butler: Brer Terapin, Kieth Curry; Brer Coon, Miss Meadows, Marie Hooper and Miss Goose, Pam Wilborn. Joe Sherwood did the part of Doc Crow. 62 The Pot Boiler The drama department produced the first dinner theatre ever at Plainview High School in February with 'The Pot Boiler . Put together with the help of the student council, the drama was preceded by a steak dinner hosted by Steve Thompson and other members of the student council. Cast of Pot Boiler consisted of Joe Stafford, David Tucker, Rico Rey, Becky Williams, Bryan Houlette, Keith Curry, Faith Harding and Malcolm Cundiff. D'Lea Perry was student director. The backstage crew included Bill Harris, Jeff Stalup and Steve Curry. Miss Canterbury and student council sponsor, Sandy Williams, have expressed the hope that the dinner theatre will be a part of PHS drama in the future. Gwendolyn and Cecily Pigeon (Faith Harding, right; Leah Covey, left) sympathize with Felix Unger (Scott Butler). 64 'Odd Couple' a smash at PHS The PHS Drama Department presented their first all-school play, Paul Simon's The Odd Couple , on November 10 and 11 in the high school auditorium. The comedy centers around the hilarious incidents that occur between two divorced men of totally opposite temperaments who end up sharing living quarters as a result of their divorces. Mack Yates portrayed the easy-going and sloppy Oscar Madison. Felix Unger, the neat and fussy member of the pair, was portrayed by Scott Butler. Other cast members included Murray (Malcolm Cundiff), Vinnie (Jay Pearce), Speed (John Riggins), and Roy (Mark Smith). Faith Harding and Leah Covey filled the roles of Gwendolyn and Cecily Pigeon, two zany British sisters who live upstairs from Felix and Oscar. Joseph Sherwood served as understudy for all the male parts. Miss Debbie Canterbury directed the production with the assistance of student director Kim Blankenship. 65 Red, White and Blue Revue adds special zest to spring (Above) During intermission cancan girls make a brief of the Red, White and Blue Revue included a country appearance to deliver the message, be right back to and western medley, tap dancing, fiddle playing and the audience. (Below) The country and western sequence a duet. All three PHS choirs were involved. 66 The Choral Department presented the 6th annual Red, White and Blue Revue on May 11 and 12. Presentation '81-excellence awarded Following the theme, ''Live the Questions Now , the yearbook staff staged Presentation '81 in April. Students who had been elected as class favorites and best all-around and all runners-up for these positions, as well as the LaVerne Roach Award recipient and the runner-up in that category, were recognized. Also sharing the spotlight were students selected as Who's Who in various academic and vocational departments. Led by Editor-in-Chief Angie Bye, members of the yearbook staff served as narrators for the event. The program was presented in front of a giant replica of the cover of the 1981 yearbook. That backdrop was designed and painted by members of the art department. The Who's Who in Art Award is presented to Brenda Montez by art teacher Teri Beth Line. Above, Kenna Duckett and Steve Williams were junior class favorite runners-up. From left, Vondal Burnett, Georgia Hodges and Benito Herrera pose for a picture after receiving Best All-Around Boy, Best All-Around Girl and the LaVerne Roach Award respectively. 78 The stage is filled with class favorites, best all-around and ceremonies conducted by the Journalism department. Top award winners at the affair were Gay Hemphill and Ritchie Norrell, both of whom were awarded the Glenn Harrison Outstanding Athlete Award for their performances at Plainview High School. Hemphill participated in basketball, track and volleyball and Norrell was outstanding in football, basketball and track. Minister Charles Teykl was guest speaker at the banquet. A highlight of the evening came when members of the Angry Red football team presented Trainer Phillip Henderson with a complimentary jersey for his contributions to the team. Phillip is very special to the athletes and was given a standing ovation. 81 'Pee' Pat Brown shows off what a lot of hard work and dedication can get you. The Dogs played the Amarillo Sandies (whom they had defeated 28-13 earlier in the season) for the Bi-District title and were defeated. The score was 9-10. The second game, against the Tascosa Rebels, resulted in a 20-21 loss for Plainview—a close game and an upsetting one for Bulldog fans. Losing again to Midland Lee, the Angry Red fought another close game battle for the 12-16 loss. The Bulldogs were still fighting mad when they won the Amarillo Sandie game 21-13. P. W.
