Dedication Plain View staffers had a difficult task ... finding the individual who most personifies the theme of this book ... Promises. However one name stood out ... Mr. I. L. Whit- field. Through the influences of this dedicated teacher, the students receive a broader and better understand- ing of the intimate working of our government ... learn the true meaning of such words as life, liberty, and die pursuit of happiness.” He teaches us what it means to be an American. Striving to understand each of his students and accepting them as individuals he helps us to develop the pride, spirit, and honesty it takes to keep our ideas on top. Out of the classroom as well as in, Mr. Whitfield becomes a friend to each because he wants first to be your friend and then to be your teacher. Mr. I. L. Whitfield helps prepare us for the outside world by teaching us to think and not simply to accept gov- ernment policies. He teaches us never to say ”1 quit”, to keep going, and to stand up for what we be- lieve. With feelings of pride and pleasure we dedicate the 1971 Plain View to Mr. I. L. Whitfield. 15
