It is only in this manner that we can hope to build up a system of which confidence, friendship and go-od will are the cornerstones .... Each one of us must grow by an advancement of civilization and social vvellfbeing and not hy the acquisition of terrif tory at the expense of any neighborf' -Franklin Delano Roosevelt lt was this speech by our President that inspired us t-o make the theme of this annual PAN AMERICANISM. Qi UNITED WE. STAND I ' it K... V ' wavixhor In the past two years our school and school life have changed drastically from a happy carefree, frolicking one to a starkly realistic one. Courses have been added in mathe- matics, science, and languages to take care of the armed ser- vice demands. Many extra-curricular activities have been suspended as we have suddenly become aware of the needs of our country. Some high school boys have quit school to go to the army and to work in defense plants. Others have been drafted, and the rest have been awakened sharply to the fact that an educa- tion is all-important. Army, Navy, and Marines tests of all types have been given the students. Some few have passed and have been made officers. The rest, our friends and buddies of yesterday, have become men overnight. Some are heroes, some, battle-scarred, but all are fighting men. Our brothers, our fathers, our sweethearts, and our buddies are living, fighting, and dying for that day when peace will return to the earth, and the peacetime pleasures that they enjoyed when in school can once more be resumed. It is to these, our noble fighting men and to our honored dead, that we, the students of Plainview High, dedicate this yearbook for 1944. nl nl , 07 -111 ' If ww ,, X , nfffffl' Nw Q ,M ' ,Vi NMEF' ,- v .. .J .,,-1 rn., A, . 5: w ::.g.,y -4: - r-:--hz' E-.-:f-:ra 31 Y lg. uv- 5.55535 1 fa: Up , IA . Superintendente To THE STUDENTS or PLAINVIEW HIGH: According to information from the Federal Office of Education there are more than a million fewer students in the public high schools this year than there were two years ago. It is obvious that the armed services, slightly, but war work, shortage of labor and high wages to a greater extent, are responsible for this decrease. At the Plainview High School the picture is different.- The population of the area that our high school serves is a- bout the same as it was last year, but our high school inroll- ment has actually increased 6.5W. The Principal reported a few weeks ago that the attendance was better for this time of the year than it ever has been and that the pupils are un- usually earnest and puposeful in their work. For this noble record, I wish to extend to you my sincere congratulations. This indicates that, in spite of monetary temptation on every hand, you are determined to get an education. This indicates that you are mindful of the fact that anyone can get a job now but that in the future, when competition will be keen, only those who have the best training will hold the most desirable positions. Such determination and such planning will enable you to block, tackle and carry the ball in the game of life. Sincerely yours, O. J. LAAS in if Q ,G A L fi , f- L gg ,V P smut T U 5 y x i is K T P U At 1 ll T Q Director To all of the pupils- of Plainview High School, and to all of our ex-students we extend this annual reminder of our faith in you, in the cause of education, and our hopes for your future. At this moment most of our pupils are forced to plan their education, and their lives, for the pursuit of war. Our ex-students are in the far parts of the world or are in training to go to these places. We believe that we are helping those who are yet with us to train themselves to be better citizens. We believe that those who are far away are better for having spent some time in Plainview High School. We are persuaded that the time spent in education has been a profitable in- vestment for every one of the thousands of our former students. We hope that your spirit has grown great and more noble as your knowledge has increased. We hope that you may all be privileged to return to Plainview, or another place of your choice, to work diligently at peacetime vocations and to build homes where love and good humor are ever present. We are the class of '44 We are the first to have completed 12 grades of school. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Snyder and through the Senior Executive Committee, the Senior Class has carried on the Senior business. At the beginning of the school year Bettye Jane Ewen was elected president of the Senior Class, Bob Horne, vice-president, Sammy Hall, treasurer, Maxine Brown, secretary. As our favorites we chose Maxine Brown and J. Waring Walker. We have been well represented in all organizations in P. H. S. such as Hi-Y, Girl Reserve, Cheer Leaders, National Honor Society, Football and Basketball teams. The Senior Play, Run Hero Runl' under the direction of Miss Fredice Mires, proved to be one of the most outstanding attractions of the year. On May 12, 1944 the Seniors enjoyed one of the best Banquets that has every been given, and we also had our Senior Picnic on May 10th. We, the Seniors of '44, are leaving P. H. S. and here we leave a part of us. We are depending on you underclassmen to carry on. Don't let us down. Keep the spirit of P. H. S. high for all who are leaving and those who are to follow. Seeing all of our old Senior class of '44. I could hardly believe that these dignified men and matronly housewives were the same boys and girls I went to school with. This morning I climbed aboard the Queen Elizabeth Air Ship to attend our class reunion and who would I see first but Winnie Golden. as the hostess and our pilot was none other than Bob McDaniel. Sitting next to me was June Oxford. She had come from New York, where she is Editor of the New York Times. We talked for a while about dear ol' school days and she told me about several of the P. H, S. Grads. Sammy Hall is a bouncer in a New York nite club, owned by Wayne Hopper. Wendlan Churchwell is a farmer who talks mostly about his pigs and wheat crops. Cloyce Terrell and Vernon Collins are both preachers. They are on a nationwide tour, creating a great sensation. During the conversation, June casually mentioned her S1,000,000, 20 room home, which was built by Glen Gipson, Lewellyn Hooper, and Ioe Paul Degge. Upon arriving in Plainview we took a taxi driven by Joe Owens to the Ever Lite Hotel. Leo Baxter came to get our bags and took us to see the owner. Bert Roberts. After talking with Bert for a few minutes we found that Iohn Thomas Boyd was Mayor and then we continued on our way to P. H. S. On the way we passed a beautiful blonde who seemed familiar. It was none other than Rosa Lee Waddell, now a chorus girl in Hollywood. Lois Franklin is another young woman with her name in lights. Her fame has come as a good piano player, Some of my classmates have settled down to more prosaic professions. Waring Walker is a doctor and owns half interest in the Plainview Hospital. Curtis Parker owns the other half and Bettye Martin is head nurse. Geraldine Sisk is a soda jerker in Olin Reddell's drug store. We passed a beautiful undertaking establishment and on the sign I saw the name Billy Felton, I hear he is in partnership with Dr. Walker. Oh. yes! Lamar Jones is a dentistg most of his patients are women. When I inquired about Bettye lane Ewen I learned she is a foreign missionary in China. Looking across the beautiful campus of P. H. S., I saw a young woman passing out cigars and patting peopld on the back. It was Dorothy True, running for mayor, From another direction I saw Otero Brown coming toward us. She told us she was teaching Homemaking. Frances Underwood is carrying on the tradition of the family and teaching math. Donald McCarroll and Iohn Mason are coaching a football team that beat both the Sandies and Westerners the same season. Back at the hotel we called the date bureau and asked for two dates so we could see the town. When our escorts arrived they were Bob Horne and Lee Scrivner. First we went to the new skating rink which was owned by Wesley McCulloch. The records played were by Evelyn Ogden and her all girl orchestra. A floor show was given by Louise Brown, Melba Jean Yancey, Frances Scheele, and Bonnie May Roberson. After the floor show Mary Belle Blackwell took us over to Glenn Terrell who put on skates. Everyone rushed to the door as the famous movie actor, Bobby Winkels entered. He is here visiting johnny and Donald and the P. H, S. football team. Standing near Bob was Claude Pruitt, who is now selling sheet music at Lily Marie Gilbert's Music Shop. Skating around and around was Elsie Faye Dayton, the society gossip column editor and Harold Reese, the editor of the Plainview Evening Herald. Maxine Brown and Mildred Damron glided to the curb in a long limousine. They are now proprietors of a coast to coast chain of beauty parlors. Coming later were Erwin Adams, owner of a famous ranch in the west, Emma Faye Guy, proprietor of the Fashion Shop, and Joe Culpepper, highway patrolman. Mildred Britton, wearing a very long face, came up to me. When I asked her why, she told me she had just ruined her last pair of graduation hose, 20 years old. Lois Reiser, now living in New York, is resting after writing the most famous book of the year, How to Pick Your Man. Patsy Williams is a college professor at S. M. U. At last I found who I had been looking for, Mrs, Snyder, Miss Wiles, and Mr. Davidson. They were sitting in a corner smoking corn pipes and talking of the good ole days in 1944. Estucliantes cle Tercer Ano EAQ1 K 'Pax Wx PRESIDENT VICBPRESIDENT SECRETARY JOHN THOMAS BOYD THOMAS FIELD Lou WATSON Many Iuniors of the class 194344 are pondering over the question of graduaf tion. So much has happened throughout the last year to make us hesitantg however there are many of our class students that find it necessary to graduate this year. Even though the Junior year will be the last year for some students of Plainview High School, it will be one we will all remember. Our school term has been conducted under the Officers of the class. John Thomas Boyd, presidentg Thomas Field, VicefPresidentg Lou Watson, Secretaryg and Mrs. Willie Merle Haithcock, sponsor. They have all done much to make this year a success. In the field of sports Junior boys and girls have been among the first. The Junior class was well represented on the football team, fighting as all Bulldogs do. Three of the five cheer leaders were Juniors and we had some outstanding Iuniors on the Basketball team. We elected Io Ann Alexander and Fillmore Hendrix as the favorites of our class, and Rhoda Mulkey and IO Ann Alexander were chosen as school favorites. The Juniors had two assemblies this year instead of the usual one. They were both enjoyed by everyone. We planned a banquet for the seniors that we hope they will not forget soon. The juniors were given a picnic which we all enjoyed. Our class has gained a name for itself because we always acomplish anything we undertake. We are looking forward to next year when we will undertake the responsibility of the Senior class for we feel certain we are able to carry on and make new traditions for Plainview High School. 1 NG - T Ass. 6 , . , vt Zueu . X Estucliantes cle Segundo An L...--Q ff'- XM f 1,xxuxx..0fM PRESIDENT VICBPRESIDENT SECRETARY JACK WELDON DAVIS HORNE MARTHA ANN TULL We, the class of 1946, have now entered and finished our second year of high school. By now, our shyness has left and in its place are confidence and ability. We have maintained a good reputation though our first two years of high school life and we will strive to keep it good throughout our remaining years. We have displayed good judgment in our election of class officers and favorites. We elected Jack Weldon as president, Davis Horne, vicefpresident, and Martha Ann Tull, secretary. We chose Iack Weldon and Georgia Mixon for our class favorites, The sophomore class was well represented in the athletic field. We conf tributed some very valuable players to the football team this year. When the basket ball season came around some of the most outstanding players were Sophomores. The end of this year is the half way mark in our high school education. We look forward to our remaining years with expectation. We would like to be an example to the classes to follow us. We are proud of Plainview High School, and we are going to make it proud of us. i L UUA smzxr f w Xe, , g new i X. W PERU BR UAL Q 1 ALERIOI-IT, IACK BALIJWIN, JOANNA . With a great deal of vim. vigor and vitality the biggest class in school has been making a name for itself ever since. A few weeks after school started the class selected their capable leaders. lvlaurice Carlton became the president and Gene Weldon the vice'president. Chosen as secretary was Barbara Ann Russell. Freshman favorites elected a short time later were Howard Byars and Mary Virginia Blair. Mrs. T. A. Nelson was appointed sponsor. The record the class has made can readily be seen when one sees the school activities of the freshmen-A Capella Choir. the basket ball team, the football team, and Boys' HifY. We were represented on the A football team and the basket ball traveling squad. An unusual thing about the freshmen class is that a majority of its members have attended Plainview schools during most of their school life, We have found. however. that a number of our students came from different states, Oregon, Arizona. Georgia, Colorado. and Cklahoma. Judging from our love, loyality and enthusiasm for our Alma Mater during this school year, we feel sure that upper classmen need never fear for the success of dear old Plainview High. We solemnly resolve to uphold the standard set by the preceding classes. 0 ' X 1: x f-f x i N L Q-Zu?-Lk ERB R N PKFKNB X 6 Q X. W. Davidson We, the annual staff wish to express our deepest gratif tude to Mr. Davidson, who in his quiet, friendly manner has helped us in innumerable ways ,this past year. We were extremely fortunate to get him for a sponsor, though before we came to know him we wondered how this stern principal would be to work with. We soon found him to be a person with a sharp mind, a good sense of humor, and an allfround good fellow. Without his never-ending pa' tience, his jovial manner, and his deep understanding of human nature, this annual could never have been published. We again express our thanks to a great leader, Mr. R.
