-l-'vf as -T, -A !- . Y , ar Y istory of ains owns ip ...-.-11 The original township of Plains was formed out of WilkesfBarre and Pittston Townships respectively on November 10, 1851. At that time it contained 15 square miles. It was ohvned and occupied by the Wanamie tribe of Delaware Indians whose kindly chief was known as Jacob. He resided on a level tract of land just outside the present site of Parsons bor' ough and the name given to that locality was Iacob's Plains . At the time of the formation of the township the latter part of this name was taken and the chief 's name omitted. ' According to the accounts of prominent historians of Wyoming Val' ley, Plains has much to be proud of in connection with the early white settlement and colonization of this historic spot. SETTLERS ATTRACTED To THE VALLEY Following a report of the fertility and remarkable beauty of this valley, 119 settlers, largely from Connecticut, journeyed here late in the summer of the year 1762. They had received grants of lands from the Susquef hanna Company. This grant was destined later to become the subject of a long dispute between Connecticut and Pennsylvania settlers for the own' ership of the land. A site was immediately chosen. They settled on a tract of land just above the mouth of Beaver Brook, later known as Mill Creek, and built a number of log cabins there, probably about on the spot now occupied by the United Manufacturing Furniture Company. After clearing some of the virgin forest the settlers sowed wheat and decided to return to Connecticut for the winter. At this time the Delaware Indians, under their chief Teddyuscung, were quite friendly to the whites. Early in the next spring the Connecticut settlers returned to their new settlement accompanied by their wives and children and bringing their farm' ing implements and live stock. They immediately set to work to clear more land for corn and wheat, and Soon had a flourishing settlement. DRIVEN BACK FROM WHENCE THEY CAME. Unfortunately for the life of the colony, in the summer of 1763 several Indian dwellings, including that of Teddyuscung, were fired, the chief per' ishing in the flames. According to several historians this was the work of a band of Iroquois headed. by Capt. Bull, a son of Teddyuscung. The crime was charged to the settlers. I .
