SCHOOL HISTORY The biggest change that probably has taken place in the Plains community has been in the schools. The first school in Plains was a two room building constructed in 1886 near the present site of the high school building. This was used up until the year 1912 when a two story brick building was built. In 1920 the Plains schools were consolidated and a new modern school house was constructed. It was not finished, however, until the end of the first semester in the shcool year of 1922-23. In 1947 a modernistic agriculture and industrial arts building was added to the school. Also this same year the gymnasium was doubled in size. During the summer of 1950 a lighting system for the football field was installed and on Satur- day, September 23, 1950, the first night football game was held. As the grade school enrollment increased, there was need for space, so in 1959 a new grade building was constructed. It was of the latest design, both inside and out. In 1964, Plains consolidated with Kismet and proposed to build the new Southwestern Heights plant midway between the two towns. The new school is now under construction and will be ready by September of 1966. DUNN'S JACK AND JILL PLAINS, KANSAS

JAYBORTH, President FRED FOSTER, Clerk The 1964-65 school board for the Common School District No. 1 worked on plans for the South- western Heights, the unified Plains- Kismet school. The board was composed of five members, three from Kismet and two from Plains. This board has done a fine job in solving the many problems which are associated with unification. They have also helped each school iron out difficulties which arose during the school year. H. G. ADAMS III, Member Superintendent Hubert Dillon, left, has finished his third year at Plains High. Mr. Dillon plans to serve as principal of Plains Grade School the 1965-66 school year. Donald Hennigh, right, principal of the grade school, completed his first year here at Plains. Besides his duties as principal, he taught math in the seventh and eighth grades.
