Major Gordon Cooper received the Distinguished Service Medal from President Kennedy at the White House in May, following Cooper’s 22 orbit flight and manually controlled re-entry. With the assassination of John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, youngest president in U.S. history, the country lost a highly-regarded and remarkably capable statesman and administrator.
