The Plainsmen finished their first undefeated season since the 1953 campaign, whipping 8 opponents in succession and piling up 276 points to 50. Fowler was the first team to feel the power of the Big Red going down to a crushing defeat 46—0 in the seasons opener for both squads. The following Friday, Lakin came from the reaches of the far north and for the first half out-played the home team, holding a 13-0 halftime lead. But the second half was a different story as Plains held Lakin to practically nothing while they moved at random and won 14-13 for their first Hi-Plains win. The Johnson Trojans were the third stepping stone for Plains by the rousing score of 39-0 in a listless dull game that found Cobb running the opening kick-offback for a touchdown that set the pace for the day. Arch-rival Meade came to town on Oct. 12 and went home a badly out-classed rival as they absorbed a 26-13 lacing. This game was a preparation for the Big Game to follow against Eklhart on the 19th, there, as the Wildcats laid ambush for the Plainsmen. 21 Plains 46 Fowler 0 II 14 Lakin 13 II 39 Johnson 0 II 26 Meade 13 II 19 Elkhart 6 II 46 Satanta 0 II 46 Sublette 13 II 46 Beaver 6 The Elkhart-Plains game was far and away the biggest game of the season for the southwest area of Kansas, and Plains had the role of underdog. But predictions were unimportant as the Big Red ran ramsack over the host team and left the field 19-6 victors with Coach Gibson missing the game. And on and on the ball rolled.....Plains cinched at least a tie for the crown by com- pletely smothering the Indians of Satanta 46-0 in a dust storm while Kirkland of Satanta stormed another way. Teachers meeting vacation was made happy by the Hi-Plains Championship following a rousing 46-13 win over the Sublette Laks on a beautiful night for football on Oct. 26th. The final game was Homecoming against the Beavers Dusters who had a year before smeared us 27-0. The '57 encounter was different as Gibson wound up with his first unde- feated team after a 46-6 win over Beaver. Following the season, various papers listed team rating and picked other teams. Gen- erally speaking. Plains was ranked second in the Southwest area by all papers. The most conclusive team composition was that of the Dodge City Globe. This team was picked by the coaches of the area. Picked on the first 33 were Norman Utz at Quarterback and Garvin Cobb at Halfback. Honorable mention for the team from Plains were: Archie Sinclair and Leon Malone at Ends, Norman Dunlop at Guard, Norman Angell at Halfback, and Butch Fletcher at Fullback. Butch Fletcher was chosen on the Garden City Telegram first Eleven and Garvin Cobb made Honorable Mention on the Western Team as chosen by the Wichita Eagle. SENIOR CLASS MEMBERS OF THE ALL-VICTORIOUS SQUAD FOR THE 1956 SEASON ARE, BACK ROW: Assistant Coach Raines, Norman Angell, Earnest Fletcher, Norman Utz, Garvin Cobb, Royce Lawson, Coach Gibson. BASKETBALL SEASON HIGHLIGHTS The 1956-57 round- ballers of Plains under the guidance of Coach Gerald Raines completed a highly successful sea- son compiling a 17-5 re- cord. Competition on the Plainsmen schedule was tough all year as evidenced bv the fact that 7 teams played attended Regional Tournaments about the state. Of the seyen two proved themselves to be state caliber in both B and BB brackets. The Plainsmen scorers were led by Royce Lawson who averaged 18.8 points er game. Heablyassisted y teammate Norman Utz with a 14.9 count. High on the boards for the sea- son was Utz who copped 10.3 rebounds per game. J. Lawson pulled in an average of 5.2. Second place seemed to be the spot for the Plainsmen this year, as they finished 2nd in the High Plains League race, 2nd in the High Plains Tournament and 2nd in the District Tournament at Meade. They started the sea- son out on the right foot with a 65-23 avengeance of Kismet following the season opener upset by that same team in the 1955—56 season opener. Then followed an 8 game winning skein that was finally snooped by the Sublette Larks on the Sub- lette (cracker box) floor. The following Tuesday •Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Pla Plains literally moved to Meade en-masse for the evening to see their team roll to a 59-39 victory over the Southwest Kansas League champs. This year found the Plainsmen taking their first overnight road trip which they referred to as their Westward Swing. They left Friday and that same evening de- feated the Lakin Broncos to the tune of 59-46. Following the game they dropped back to Garden City where they spent the night in the new and luxurious Wheat Lands Motel. Saturday night the Big Red ventured on north to Tribune where they suffered their second defeat in a raggedly played contest that found Royce Lawson watching from the sidelines due to injuries sustained during the Lakin-Plains game the previous night. The Plainsmen had smooth sailing from their on into the finals of the League Tournament. They came out of the Annual League affair with a 2nd place trophy and a 15-3 record. Cimmarron was next to feel the might of the Big Red Wave as they went down 61-48. The District Tournament held at Meade again found Plains 2nd place winners. From here the Raines-coached squad ventured to Cimmarron for their opening game against Pawnee Rock in the Regional Meet. This was the final game of the season for the Plains team as they lost a thriller to the opposition by one measley point, 53-52. 16 STRAIGHT WINS FOR J.V.'S The towns-people were quite proud of the J.V.’S and not without reason as they marched to an all-victorious season of 16 straight wins, including the 2nd team League Championship. Orrison, M.D. 33 V' f 5r SdVNS fiutoqiapU MOON MIST THEME FOR JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET OF '56 May 10 marked the day, 7 p.m. the time and Plains High School Gym the place as the annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held in honor of the soon to be graduates. When the honorees, faculty, school board members and there wives entered the door they were greeted musically by a trio singing Welcome , composed of the male class officers (Norman Utz, Royce Lawson, and Norman Dunlop) and then directed by the only female officer, Jo Eakes, into the grass floor covered reception room, corsages and boutonnieres were pinned on by Sophomore representative Lynda Angel 1. The gateway into the Banquet room was crowned with the words Moon Mist which served as the theme and also the spot where flash bulbs sparkled for 30 minutes prior to the dinner. The menu corresponded with the theme as The Big Dipper, Stardust and other nectural sights were served. Program consisted of Welcome, Norman Utz, Junior class president; girls' sextet com- posed of La Von Graham, Betty Kisner, Lucy Beckman, Donna Jean McCarty, Leota Wriston, and Alaice Jacobs, singing Stardust and No Other Love , trumpet solo, Blue Moon played by Norman Utz; response by the Senior class president, Lucy Beckamn and remarks by Superintendent C. A. Gibson. Highlight of the evening was a prom with music furnished by Tom Ward, former Plains teacher, and his band from Hugoton. Many spectators were in the balcony. Food for the banquet was prepared by the Junior mothers headed by Mrs. O. N. Cobb. Sixanxiousjuniors awaiting the moon-mist menu David is pensive as Alice, Donna Jean, Leon, are, Harvey, Rose, Darryl, Bertha, Josephine and Royce and Norman await the food. Garth. All smiles are Harold, Seniors Betty and Rosemany and Junior Hosts Norman and LaVon. Leota seems to have caught on to the joke as Garvin, Larry, Warren and Barbara are surprised. THE JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET 1957 Not so long ago., .the sea was large. ..and today the sea has lost nothing. ..it keeps all in the corals. When I go into the grass of the sea floor, I will go alone. This famous quotation of Sandberg's was taken from the Sea Hold. It is a perfect frontpiece suggestion for the Junior-Senior Banquet, whose theme was Coral Fantasy. After many weeks of work, planning and preparation, the Juniors and their sponsors completed their decorations Saturday morning on April 27th. The ceiling and sides were portioned from the rest of the gym by blue crepe paper streamers to give underwater illusion while the ceiling dipped several times to show waves of the ocean top. The main attraction was a partly sunken treasure chest with strewn gold pieces and an ancient anchor. Around the centerpiece were coral and sea shells. All the tables had tiny replicas of the large center- piece. The band nook was decorated in pink crepe paper for the appearance of a giant clam shell. Behind the head table in pink letters of glitter, the theme was spelled out to give it a finishing touch. The program consisted of: Invocation, Lord's Prayer sung by Lynda Angel I: Welcome, Judy Satterfield: Response, Harvey Bond, Music, Connie Boyd, Judy Satterfield, Lynda Angell, Jerry Lawson and Kay Evans, Closing Remarks by Mr. Gibson. Tom Ward and His Sophisticates from Liberal played for the prom which lasted from 8:30 to 11:30. Harvey Bond gives the response. Mr. and Mrs. Gibson at the Prom. Isn’t anyone going to ask these girls to dance? Seemed to be enjoying the food or is it the fellowship? Or was it the Band? JUNIOR PLAY OF 1955 That Crazy Smith Family was presented by the Junior Class of Plains on December 2nd at 8:00 p.m. back in the early winter of 1955. This is a timely comedy dealing with the frustration encountered by Tony Smith (Butch Fletcher),star football player of the Town High School Team, when a number of college bids for his services. But Tony has promised his girl Babs (Sandra Fink) he'd go to college with her. The Big out of state schools begin putting on the pressure by send- ing various feminine representatives to work on Tony. Chief among these sophisticated vamps is Julie Weston (Donna Jean McCarty), who is willing to sacrifice her own boy- friend, Steve Brandon (Royce Lawson) for the old alma mater. Ma and Pa Smith (Alice Jacobs and Norman Utz), watch as each of their children work for fame and publicity. Sister Sally (Josephine Eakes) aspires to be an artist, which Buddie (Gart Cobb) wants to be a prize fighter. Smaller sister Betty (Leota Wriston) bounces around the stage, getting in every one's way, while trying to be of help. Aunt Bella (La Von Graham), the old maid aunt spends her time attempting to enduce Professor Slattery (Archie Sinclair) into a proposal, while Dick Jones (David Fledman) a southern boy tries to prove his love to Sally. Being All Collegiate are John Staples and Norman Dunlop. FIRST ROW: Leota Wriston, Donna McCarty, Alice Jacobs, Sandra Fink, Josephine Eakes. BACK ROW: Garth Cobb, Norman Utz, Royce Lawson. NOT PICTURED: LaVon Kruenberg, David Feldman, Archie Sinclair and Butch Fletcher. Alice Jacobs pleas for quiet as Archie Sinclair is confused by Leota Wriston who is aided by LaVon Kruenberg. Butch Fletcher is subdued and white as the feline Donna Jean McCarty moves in. 38 Love and Marriage was sung by Leota Wriston and Donna Jean McCarty. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY 1956 Everyone enjoyed a relaxing, fun-filled evening on Nov. 16, attending the Junior Class Play entitled Adam's Evening . Thev saw Jerry Lawson as always getting-into-trouble- Adam ; Judy Satterfield as Anna, Aaam's suspecting wife; Mrs. Bean, Adam's sarcastic mother- in-law, played Connie Boyd; Lynda Angel I playing the part of Marcella, the innocent, but trouble causing wife of the jealous Dr. Fragoni, who was played by Kay Evans; Casper Wendell Fox, added humor as he appeared on the scene of events; Martha Burns was seen playing the part of Gertie, the curious Negro maid, who knew a little too much for Adam's own good. They saw Carl Holmes play the part of Elmer Green, adding his bit in the plot by appearing to be a crazy maniac; Clifton Sutton, as Mr. Cokes, the man who should have been dead, but was alive and kicking; they saw Mr. Cokes' wife, who was only interested in herself, portrayed by Helen Nolting. But wait! That wasn't all the audience saw. Between acts, they were royally entertained by Judy Satterfield and Kay Evans, who sang The Bus Stop Song . They also saw Jerry Lawson singing The Railroad Comes Through the Middle of the House. Lynda Angell accompaning both numbers. Mr. Harold Henderson, the proud director of the entire evening, was presented with a small token of appreciation by the class for his hard work. The class gave him a shaving kit (Leather). The class were well-pleased with the returns of the box office from the play, which were used to finance the Annual Junior-Senior Banquet. Jerry!! What in the world???? Martha tries to explain, to no avail. The whole cast. Connie doubts. Clifton wonders. Jerry worries. SENIOR PLAY 1957 After the storm and missed school days finally past, casting for the annual Senior Class Play was accomplished on Saturday, April 6. The play, Dressed to Kill, was a murder mys- tery, one of the first in a number of years for the local high. This is a real old-fashioned who- dunit with the audience given all the clues throughout the play and not one of the typical slap-stick mysteries usually performed by high schools. The cast included: Royce Lawson as Phil who is accused of murder: his friend Stanley played by Greg Hayden and his old maid aunt, Lydia who is Bertha Beckman. Donna Jean McCarty plays Phil's cousin, Alice, who loves Ronald (Harvey Bond). Sandra Fink and John Staples play the part of Louise and Tom, two people entangled in the web of suspicion as are Carmen Evans and Norman Dunlop who play Estelle and Royce. Nancy Remick plays Myrq, an aspiring actress, while Norman Utz and Butch Fletcher portray the Inspector ana Ryan, the police element. Rose Hall portrays the faithful maid, Cora. Date of the play was set for May 7th, a Tuesday, an unusual date for school plays in high hopes that no conflict will arise between our play and plays of other schools or any civic activities. Others helping in the play aside from the cast were Garth Cobb who sustained a head- injury by falling Timber while helping to set up the stage, his brother Garvin who helped with the sound effects, Alice Jacobs, Jo Eakes and Leon Malone who helped with the ushering. Leon Malone, Norman Angell, Garth and Garvin, Alice and Donna Jean did the work of advertising. Harold Henderson directed the play. We had a quartet of Garvin, John Norman and Norman May not be pretty but it was loud and pleased all. THE CAST FOR OUR PLAY THIS YEAR INCLUDED, FRONT ROW: Nancy Remick, Donna Jean McCarty, Bertha Beckman, Sandra Fink, Rose Harris. BACK ROW: Norman Dunlop, Norman Utz, John Staples Greg Hayden, Carmen Evans and Royce Lawson. NOT PICTURED ARE: Harvey Bond and Butch Fletcher. Mr. Henderson got a present of two shirts and a tie plus a relieved mind when the play ended. Royce is dead, there is no doubt and the 1st act closed. 40 What in the world is everyone looking at?
