PLAINFIELD HIGH SCHOOL PLAINFIELD, ILLINOIS 60544 VOLUME 39 EDITOR — TINA ALLEN ASSISTANT EDITORS CHRIS RAY, STUDENT LIFE KARI PERINAR, VARSITY SPORTS DEBBIE SCHELLER, F S SPORTS MELINDA THOMAS, UNDERCLASS OPENING PROSE — FIELDER STAFF In the beginning, a piece sits alone on the board, feeling different, out of sync, not quite fit- ting in. Then the sur- roundings begin to blend together and the piece feels more a part of this intricate matrix that is Plainfield High School. Friends join the piece, forming a tight-fitting sec- tion that grows and develops into a potpourri of in- dividual personalities, all vy- ing for the perfect slot. No two pieces are exactly alike, yet they all have similarities that make them form a whole. They are joined together on a board which can sup- port them all. As pieces shift, horizons widen, and all become one. After four years, years of joy and sorrow, love and hate, dreams and disasters, the board tilts. The com- pleted puzzle cracks. Older pieces, having thrived there for four years, fall and break off. The pieces are now separate, no longer joined together within their secure borders. The game as we once knew it has become a straight path into the new maze of independence. The piece is shaped just a little differently than before. Alone, it searches for a new board, new pieces, a new puzzle to become a part of, where it can eventually blend in and form a new life. TABLE CL CONTENTS SI’KCIAI. Andy was involved in football, wrestling, and track. In the fall he plans on beginning col- lege. He will be doing two years of engineering in one year. Whether he goes to col- lege in Uruguay or the U.S. depends on how much he misses Lynda Partilia. Leading the 9-2 Cats was the LSC MVP Grant Avery with 894 yds. on offense and 142 tackles on defense, scoring an incredi- ble 72 pts. Rounding out the All- Conference team were Chad Anderson, Jeff DePodesta, Eric Gallt, Ken Hensel, junior Jeff Miller, Dennis Smith, and Jeff Zwolin- ski. Blake Mattix got Special Mention and most improved. Leading the Cats in in- terceptions was DePodesta with 8, and Anderson sacked 9 quarterbacks. Plainfield worked hard this season and it paid off well. With a record like that, who knows what next year will produce. Escaping a Sycamore tackier, QB Ken Hensel throws another spectacular pass. Junior John Ivlow was the key to the team, leading the conference in almost every aspect. The Golden Toe of Pat McDaniel worked for extra points. Every moment was an intense one as the Cats blew away their conference and entered the state playoffs. 147 1st Row: Joe Mellon, Jenny Wozniak, Sarah Behling, Shelly Buikema, Brad Stanfield, Captain. 2nd Row: Coach Steve Riederer, Jason Bar- rowman Captain, Gary Binkley, Paul Chapell, Scott Pacquet, Pat Blegan, Captain. 1 Glancing back as he leaves the competition in the dust, Capt. Brad Stanfield proves again why he was voted MVP. As the team looks on, Scott Pacquet cruises to the finish with speed and determination. 148 VARSITY Teams 3rd in conference; Larson 8th in state In the world of sports, everyone wants to repeat. Unfortunately an injury can shatter that dream. The lady Harriers once again had a very successful season (11-3), placing 4th in Regionals and 14th in Sectionals. But with ankle injury to Sherry Buikema, the Wildcats were not able to hold onto their Conference title. Capt. Jenny Larson once again led the girls, finishing 8th in state, surpassing even her own goals. Lar- son and Jenny Hayes were All-Conference, plac- ing 2 and 8, with Capt. Kari Perinar receiving Honorable Mention. With the return of 7 of the 8 runners, Plainfield looks to be another top con- tender in the conference race. Coach Riederer was probably more surprised at the outcome of the boys season than the boys themselves. They finished an excellent 12-2 season. MVP Brad Stanfield broke the varsity course record (166'23 ) at Four Seasons Park, helping them to a 2nd place at the Benet Invita- tional. Along with Pat Blegan, Jason Bar- rowman, and Gary Binkley, the varsity finished 3rd in Conference and 6th in Regionals. Brad and Pat qualified for Sectionals, placing 65 and 118. With the loss of 5 seniors, it will be tough to exceed this season. Jody Wozniak gives it her all as she sprints to the finish. 1st Row: Jenny Larson, Capt., Debbie Odegaard, Shelly Buikema, Sherry Buikema, Jessica Holforty. 2nd Row: Coach Riederer, Sarah Behling; Jenny Hayes, Jody Wozniak, Kari Perinar, Capt., Michelle Kelly, Jenny Wozniak. 149 First Row: Dwight Stone, Steve Bailey, Steve Schrader, Rob Gaylon. Tourney It was a tough, but successful year for our varsity golfers. Co- MVP winners Jim Ott and Brian Bergman led the team to their 7-7 record and a 5-2 record in Conference. They tied for 4th in overall conference standings The golfers also placed wel (4th) in the Will County tourna ment and a commendable 8th i the Regionals. In the midst of flying sand, Jim Ott chips the ball out of the dreaded sand trap. 150 With the speed of lightning, the ball is airborne! First Conference Kin! “Another great year for a great new program. That was how Coach Conrad felt about his varsity girls’ tennis team. He probably felt even better about the new courts being built for next season. But he was most pleased as the girls racked up their 1st conference win in history against Waubonsie. They also placed 6th in the tough Little 7 Con- ference match, where Angie Blum placed 4th. Coach Conrad felt his 4 returning starters and the group of sophomores coming up will make the team a contender in the Little Seven race next year. Junior Jenny Geistler returns a ball with her two-handed backhand. As Catie Kasper serves, partner Jill Madison awaits the return during their Morris match. Second Consecutive Undefeated Season Team finishes 14-0 History repeated itself again in Plainfield. The Varsity Volleyball team had its 2nd consecutive undefeated season and were Conference champs for the 5th con- secutive year. They were led by MVP’s Ann Burke and Gayle Waldvogel, who, along with Kelly Catalenello, made the All-Conference team. Ten Ayers and Lynn Hansen, who had a record of 13 aces in one game, were Special Mention. The exceptional Burke has played in 37 conference games without a loss, 42 with only one loss. The 14-0 Wildcats have proved once again that history does repeat. MVP Bruce Whittman was voted All- Tournament at the Glenbard Tourney, and, along with Ken Hensel and Bill Cherry, was named to the All-Conference 1st team, with Jeff Zwolinski receiving Honorable Mention. Whittman also led the team with the most free throws (13 for 13 in one game!) and Cherry had the most assists (123). As Zwolinski remembers the fun times the team had: “We all called Mr. Hensel on the phone every 5 minutes to wish him a Happy Birthday!” Ken Hensel recalled his most em- barrassing moment as “getting kicked out of practice by my own Dad! This exceptional team will definitely be up for the title again next year! Jeff Zwolinski leaps to victory over Bolingbrook. Bill Cherry rises above the competition.
