Table of Contents The Junior class entered the powderpuff hall of fame this year as they captured victory on Friday even- ing. Coached by Miss Gallahue and Mrs. Martin, the juniors beat the Roppa-Yarbrough coached seniors 29-12. Afterwards, for the third con- secutive year since its revival, the bon- fire flared as crowds gathered to ex- perience the warmth and reflect on the week’s activities. 7 On Friday evening, prior to the powderpuff game, the class games were held on the football field. Included in this year’s program were a relay, Volkswagen push, and tug of war. The overall win- ner was the freshman class. 8 1980 Homecoming Court 1980 HOMECOMING COURT: Junior Attendants: Lori Plut. Rob Kovacevich. Senior Attendants: Kim Rife. Rick Pederson. Bill Gullickson of the Montreal Expos was the main speaker of the day, and well-known and experienced coaches from every sport were available for presentations and question-answer sessions. The event, held on Sunday, Nov. 23 in the PHS auditorium, drew a small crowd and in the future, the club hopes to influence more young, potential athletes with the continuation of this program. College Night Successful College Night, a program designed to introduce students to colleges, entrance exams, and financial aid programs, was held this year on Oct. 20 in the PHS cafeteria. All public state univer- sities and approximately 35 private institutions were represented. Fifteen out-of-state schools and or military academies were also available. The evening program, sponsored annually by the PHS Guidance Department, attracted students from various area schools and, again, turned out to be very successful. 16 “The Mouse That Roared” Page (Vicki Bellatiore) relays a message from the United States. The tiny Swiss duchy of Grand Fenwick, governed by Gloriana (Dee Bartholme) and her two ministers (Dan Ewing, Dave Adsit), has had its only means of economic support undermined by the USA. Gloriana's unique solution is to declare war on the USA to gain the aid, relief and rehabilitation that the USA always bestows on those countries it defeats. However, the US Secre- tary of State (Lane Mattix) considers the “Declaration” a prank. Gloriana escalates: her chief bowman and forest ranger Tully Bascom (Larry DeWitt) invades New York City, captures the “Q Bomb,” its maker (Mike Cleary) and several military personnel (Jim Barnes, Sandy Eddy and Sue Eddy). The U.S. President (Joel Lichtenwalter) realizes the Declaration is no hoax and sends the Secretary of State to Grand Fenwick to neg- otiate for peace. Gloriana informs Tully of his new duty for the country. Count Montjoy (Dan Ewing), Gloriana (Dee Bartholme), and Mr. Benter (Dave Adsit) discuss their country's fate. Bewildereo tourists (Jane Gove, Annette Hamby, Jeanette Gruber, Gayle Yahnke) turn to Tully Bascom (Larry DeWitt) for help. 17 Second Annual Madrigal Dinners Add to Holiday Festivities This year marked the most successful Madrigal Dinner ever. The cafeteria was packed on December 12 and 13. as the Madrigals displayed their new costumes and banners. The group ap- peared on Ralph Sherman’s radio show, at numberous nursing homes, Nino’s, Jefferson Square, and on the Choral Christmas album. Madrigal Singers Kevin Bedford, Robbin Fredericksen. I im carter, and Nannette Wilslef. Laura Imhof, Bob Buss. Kim Rife, and Link Alander watch anxiously as they sing in the food. Juggler Randy Kinley provides uni- que entertainment at the first evening's performance. 18 Rupert (Joel Lichtenwalter) and Jessie (Laura Imhot) secretly discuss their affairs. Lancelot (Rich Sienko) tries to explain that one away. International Thespian Troupe Initiated at PHS Once again P.H.S. has joined the International Thespian Society, an honor society for actors. To be a “thespian” the members had to accumulate a determined number of points by participating in the- atrical or theatrical related work. Once a member, the thespian must keep up his outstanding work in the theater. An initiation ceremony was held on Janu- ary 19, with 14 students becoming members. A cere- mony of speeches and awards was held and the inductees performed a one-act comedy entitled “The Trysting Place,” which takes place in a hotel lobby where many couples meet and tell of their affairs. But unknown to all, a hidden stranger hears of all that is going on. When the intruder is found out, the affairs of all come out into the open and chaos occurs. Miss Curtis (Tammy Berlin) reveals all as Lancelot stares in disbe- lief. 19 Do you know something I don't know? Mr. and Mrs. Francik chaperoned eighteen people to Germany, Austria and Switzerland in April during Easter vacation. Highlights of the trip were Rothenburg, Munich, Salzburg, the Zugspitze, the castles, the Black Forest, Heidelberg, and the Rhein River. A Dream Come True In Innsbruck the Bavarian hats were a popular souvenir. On the summit of the Black Forest: Mrs. Francik. Mr. Francik. Susan Calasci- betta. Henri. Chris Hillock. Laura Imhof. Neuschwanstein castle was one of the many highlights of the trip. 20 Student Auction Oh please, not her! Once again the P.H.S. auction sponsored by the Lettermen’s Club was a successful event. This year the club called in a professional auctioneer to raffle off the Student The money raised from the auction will help support the P.H.S. athletic program. Coaching a great group of athletes with enormous spirit, first year golf coach Doug Ostrem watched the PHS golf team come back from a 1979 season of 2-12 to finish with a 7-7 over-all record. Team captain, Jim Johnston led the team to what was one of the better seasons for any PHS varsity golf team. The biggest upset of the year came on Septem- ber 10, when Plainfield handed Illini 8 conference champs Joliet West a stunning defeat. The most valuable Player was Bill Chapman, and Most Improved was Tom Beyer. Shelly LaFountain Being the first girl to golf for the PHS golf team, Shelly started playing for Plainfield when she was a freshman, two years ago. Shelly had a fine season this year,” said Coach Doug Ostrem. She played consistently and was a valuable asset to the varsity team this year. “I hope Shelly will be back with us next year, because she is a fine golfer, says Coach Ostrem. 90 J That's Teamwork! First year Coach Doug Ostrem says, They are a great group of kids, and I'm proud of every last one of them. Leading the team to victories were top golfers Dan Johnston and John Libersher. Libersher also took 3rd place in the conference meet. With this year's sophs and the varsity team com- bined, they will have a very rewarding season in 1981. 91 New Coach for Runners v o o CO CO o FRONT ROW: Jon Frink, Doug Dickenson. Garret Smith. Hampered by injury and illness, the 1980 C.C. team finished with a mediocore 5-10 record. Sidelin- ed with everything from a cold to hypoglycemia, the harriers had 3-3 record in the conference, despite the 500 miles logged in pre-season practice. Team captain Randy Kinley unable to finish the season due to pneumonia was Plainfield’s number one runner when he competed. During his absence, sophomore Pete Offerman. and Juniors Garret Smith and Don Govoni led the team. Although Coach Riederer lost three seniors this year, he feels his hopes are high for next year. Finishing first in 3 consecutive meets on the varsity level, sophomore Pete Offerman will be a definite threat to opposing teams next season. Junior Brett Webster taking 20th place in the conference meet will also be a top contender for high honors next season. The season, in fact was the best one yet in LSC play as the Wildcats finished with a 6-1 record, good enough to earn PHS a share of the con- ference title. Led by third year Coach McKeon with assistant coaches Ivlow, Lange and Rogien, Plainfield lost only once throughout their 9 game season. Despite the successful season, the Wildcats failed to gain entry imo the IHSA State Playoffs. “My biggest let down was not making it into the playoffs,” said McKeon at the fall banquet. McKeon was voted LSC Coach Of The Year while 5 of his players, Rick Pederson, Mike Whitman, Kirk Schaur, Jeff Mahaffey, and Mike Daughters were named to the all-conference team. As we reflect on our four years at PHS, it seems as though we have travelled in circles many times — going quickly, but getting nowhere. The late John Lennon wrote, “I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round. Oh, how I love to watch them roll. As he suggests, travelling in circles can be a fascinating and enjoyable experience. With this in mind, reflecting on our high school years conjures up memories of the many spokes of those wheels — the supports of the cycles of our lives. These supports include the knowledge, friends, and experiences gained in high school. Then, as we reflect upon the circles in which we have travelled the past few years, we realize that, going quickly we did qet some- where. As you flip through the pages of this collection, it is our wish that you reflect upon the cycles which you have tra- velled this far in life, upon the supports of those cycles, and upon the many memories sparked by these pages. Take time, too. to relax, sit back, and just watch the wheels go round — and prepare to travel the new cycles of life. Enjoy our book. 198 $ane Heafii, Editor and nLorettu y4rduti(jh% Assistant Editor 199 — A — Brett Abbott 70. 72. 182 George Adam 166 Cindy Adsit 72. 129 Dave Adsit, 17, 62, 64, 71, 73, ‘ 150 Becky
