PLAINSMAN 1979 Plainfield High School Plainfield, Illinois Volume 31 Co-editors Julie Harshbarger Mike Lambert CHANGES Few people would assert thc t mere change is a value. It depends upon the direction in which • change takes place.” — Walter A. Last row —1979. THE HIGH SCHOOL . . .CHANGES In 1949 when the first editions of the PLAINSMAN were issued, PHS was a three-story brick building, which stood where the Central Grade School playground is now. All of the Plainfield schools were located on the same lot. Construction of the present high school was begun in 1956. By the mid- 60's the three levels of schooling had been spread around the village. Since 1956 the high school itself has been the subject of many changes. Several additions have been made to the original building. Outside, a stadium, an observatory — ( it's not a storage shed?! ), and a second parking lot were built. In 1974 the Administration Building was built and by 1975 the school had a new music area, cafeteria, and auditorium. In thirty-one years the school has strived to keep up with the changing times. Looking towards the futuro High School in 1956. leaving after o long day. FACES. . . CHANGE Faces are olways changing. There are new hair styles, cute faces, fashion eyeglasses on faces, and funny faces at PHS. Most boys wear their hair long, but unlike their 1960 counterpart, their hair is feathered, styled, and blown-dry. Girls wear their hair long or short or anywhere in between. There are faces of new freshmen. This year we have two different faces — Nina Biering, a Norwegian, and Sigrid Meiser, a German. Both are studying in the United States for a year. There are faces you expect to see together and there are faces you never expect to see together, but there are faces you will never I I Eat, drink and be merry 11 Some typical students of the 50's — recognize anyone? Faces of all oges!! Our Norwegian student — Nina fcering, behind friends Laurie Graham and Deb Johnson. ‘Smile you’re on candid cam- rnl Our German student — Sigrid Meiser, and a bashful Styles have come a long waylll T' FASHIONS. . . CHANGE In 1949 bobby socks, midi skirts, straight leg jeans, and bulky tweed coats were seen at PHS. Since then the lengths of dresses have gone up and down, hair styles have changed, and white T-shirts with sweaters have disappeared. Girls may now wear slacks and jeans, but styles ore changing back to tweeds, straight-leg jeans, and skirts. Boys still wear jeans, but T-shirts have returned with a new look — they carry slogans, rock group names, and advertisements. Boys can wear boots, and shirts aren't necessarily worn tucked in, as once required. The casual look is the current trend. CARS... CHANGE Very few students drove to school in 1 949, but on almost any day this year you can see two parking lots full of cars. In thirty- one years cars have changed from large bulky styling to a more compact and sleek style. We learn to drive in more comfortable cars, and we drive more than kids of a generation ago. Changes haven't taken place just on the outside, though. There is more power under the hood, bucket seats, AM FM radios, and 8-track or cassette tape decks. One of the biggest changes is that vans no longer mean beat up panel trucks, but rather they are recreational vehicles which are highly customized. THINGS. . . CHANGE Almost anything a student looks at in our school has changed. Boy's letter jackets have changed dramatically. Students are still seen at each other's lockers, but as in the school's hallways, they are seen arm in arm instead of just holding hands. Shop classes have changed. The crowded woods shop of 1949 is now replaced with an industrial arts area, which includes a large woods shop, metals shop, and drafting and electronics rooms. And the library has now become a Media Center. Class rings are now heavier and more expensive. Students also have the choice of stone colors, engraving, and ring styles. The gym boasts a new scoreboard, which changed the looks of the gym wall. A cafeteria is something P.H.S. did not operate in 1949, and the students five years ago did not have the modern and efficient cafeteria we have now. Change has even struck the band, which as most students who attended football games know — has new uniforms. MORE THINGS. . . CHANGE Rules have changed — there are more of them than in 1949, but many rules are less strict than when they were first written. Now gum chewing is permitted; and when there is warm weather, cut-off jeans are worn. The courtyard has changed over the years — from a muddy nothing to a pleasant view to gaze at during long classes. The school day has been shortened from 8:20-3:40 to 7:45-2:10. Girls sports are gaining recognition and this year a girl’s record board was erected. At Homecoming we had our first bonfire since 1971. 12 Dancing the night away. MUSIC DANCES .. CHANGE In 1 949, thick rpm records were the main source of music, but by the mid-60’s student's record collections were made up of 45's . Those records were played on simple hi-fi systems, but now the music from 8-track tapes, cassettes, and albums is transmitted from expensive AM FM stereo set-ups. Sock Hops were held in the 1950's, while students of the 1 960's were doin' the Twist. Now students are moving to the steps of the Hustle.” Where students once danced to the sounds of jukeboxes and live bands, they are now dancing to the beat of recorded music — popularly known as disco. 13 Backwords Day — “Did you get up on the wrong side of bed? Standing — Everett Van DeVoort, Jay Mr. William Polley resigned from the School Board this year after serving one of the longest terms on the board. His absence from the board after seventeen years was indeed, a change. Mr. Polley is employed os an advisor consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is a Plainfield Volunteer Fireman. He contrib- uted to three building programs in the district: the building of Indian Trail School, Grand Prairie School, and District Offices and the High School Auditorium. As a board member, he stood for the basics in education and what was best for the students. The PLAINSMAN would like to take this space to thank him for his many years of dedication and hard work for the Plainfield School System. Mathias, Jerome Krupowicz, Donald Nier. CARNER RETIRES After thirteen yeors of teaching at Plainfield High School, Mrs. Margaret Corner announced her retirement at the completion of the first semester. The faculty gave her a retirement party in the High School Media Center, where they presented her with a service recognition plaque. Mrs. DuFrane gave a humorous account of finding a replacement for Mrs. Corner and Superin- tendent Roland Smith gave a speech on her accomplishments. Among her accomplishments was the formation of the Speech Club here in 1967. It was through Mrs. Corner that many students learned the act of speaking and of debating. We thank Mrs. Corner for her dedication and wish her the very best. Mr. Montgomery wisher Mrs. Corner the best. Mrs. DuFrane gives a humorous speech. The cake says it alll 36 Mrs. Corner takes some time to thank the faculty for the many thoughtful gifts. I did not know I hod to figure grades when I took this job! I Boy! Mrs. Book finds the punch quite interesting at her farewell party. 39 SENIORS CLASS OF 1979 CLASS MOTTO FOLLOW YOUR DREAM Watching over the other classes are the Senior Class Officers Sue Talarico, president; George Schlott, advisor; Clara White, vice president; Tom Baker, advisor; Kit Manning and Shelley Wickes, secretary-treasurer. CLASS COLORS Follow your dream . . . take one step at a time and don’t settle for less, just continue to climb . . . Follow your dream ... if you stumble, don't stop and lose sight of your goal, press on to the top. For only on top can we see the whole view, can we see what we've done and what we can do, can we then have the vision to seek something new . . . It is an organization that has gained democracy in the fact that the students used to vote in homerooms and now they hold open elections. It seems the election of candidates was domi- nated by girls over the guys. Student Council, however, has always been an organization of fine, outstanding students, and Mr. Cutter said it's, A legal place for students to gripe to.” This past year the student council sponsored two dances. The homecoming dance featured Jeff Davis, a WLS radio disc jockey. The dance was one of the best attended in recent years. In Feb- ruary a Turn-About Dance was sponsored in which the girls asked the guys. As fundraisers, the council sold flowers at Homecoming and on Valentine Day. The Valentine's Day Flower sale gave a chance for secret admirers to reveal themselves, and it was a surprising success. A blood drive was held early in the year. Sue Tolorico gives some thought to an idea. Lori Miller, Teresa LeGrand, Eileen Stack, and Nina Pubentz listen to a suggestion. PLAINSMAN Since its beginnings in the fall of 1948, the PLAINSMAN has undergone many changes. For example, the entire senior class could be found on three pages in 1 949; however, today the senior class fills 30 pages. The PLAINSMAN has been formed by the changing needs of Plainfield High School. A major change was the decision to divide the PLAINSMAN into two editions, a K-8 and a High school, in 1 972. As with every other year, changes took place this year also. We gained a new advisor, Mrs. Francik, and a staff of nearly seventy students. The staff has grown since the early days. Battling the snow (sigh) and searching for lost pictures, the staff worked many nights after school and Saturdays to meet deadlines. Working unbe- lievable hours is one thing that has not changed in over thirty years. This year the student body voted 7:1 in favor of a spring delivery for the PLAINSMAN! At the end of the 1978 school year it appeared that it had made its final change: it ceased publication. However, the school paper reappeared during the second semester this past year. The semi-monthly editions are free to the students and faculty due to the hard-working ad-staff. The paper contained advice col- umns, reviews, student interest articles and sports features. The twenty-five person staff, under their advisor, Mr. Ellis (who has con- ceded to being a “real great guy”) put many hours of work to turn out the school paper. 1957 Fielder Editors Lynda Homerding — Fielder Editor You have my undivided attention! STAR TEAM Speech competition has been very popular in Plainfield High School for the last six years. Bill Genda, a teacher at Plainfield, who later left for the ministry, first began this new interest. Two years later it became the Star Team as we know it today. An advanced competition class thought of the name — STAR meaning. Speakers Taking Action Responsibly. At their first contest they took 2nd place and received a trophy. Last year a Star Team did not develop due to lack of interest. This year Mrs. Cleary and Mrs. Wilkens are sponsoring it. They are very pleased with the number of enthusiastic members who wish to take part. The purpose of Star Team is to get students involved in different areas of public speaking: one developes poise, self-confidence, and experience in acting and public speaking. LIGHTING CREW The lighting crew runs the auditorium lights for plays, musical events, and assemblies. This year they were not under the leadership of one per- son; however, when they were needed, they grouped together to do the job. 127 WIG MASQUE Wig and Mosque is Plainfield High School's drama club. This year Wig and Mosque has performed two plays: one being “Lough-In , performed at the High School and the other being “Charlie Brown's Christmas , performed at the grade schools. To prepare for a ploy, the cast must rehearse from 6-8 weeks in advance, anywhere from 2- 4 hours per night. Obtaining props for the play is no easy chore. All people involved, including the cost, make-up crew, lighting crew, etc., must beg, borrow, and . . . make them. There ore 40 members in Wig Masque with Jann Erickson serving as president. The spon- sor is Mrs. Sprague. Wig Mosque held monthly meetings. Wig Masque was involved in a radio show on WCCQ for four years, but because of a change in time slots for them to perform; it was discontinued. In February the Wig Mas- que Club went to see “The King I in Chicago, and in February circulated its first newslet- ter, edited by Kelly Keister, and Jane Gove. It was a fun, but very active, year for everyone involved. Jann Erickson, president, (right) helps Sue Fiene and Tom Russ learn their lines. The cast performs a Christmas play in Charlie Brown's Christmas. But Dan, I know my next outfit was right here! Rich Sienko cannot believe that Tom Russ would actually wear that!! SKI CLUB The Ski Club is one of the most popular and most active organiza- tions at PHS. Under their advisor, Mr. Doug Abbott, the club has been on the move. The current club has been active since the fall of 1976. In October, this year’s group went to McCormick Place — West in Chicago for a ski exposition. After the season's first snow (of which there was plenty this year!) they headed to resorts such as Villa Olivia in Lisle, Chestnut Mountain in Galena, and Devil's Head lodge in Wisconsin. Over the spring break the club ventured to Utah for a week to ski and see the sights at Snowbird ski resort, Alta, Park City, Brighton, and Solitude. Everyone involved had very good times. On November 1, Plainfield High School hosted the Will County Math Contest but, unfortunately placed fifth. On November 16, they traveled to Morris High School to compete in the first part of the Little Seven Math Contest where they finished second behind arch-rival Oswego. At the Joliet Junior College Math Contest on March 1, 1 979 the team did not fare well, and only managed to take sixth place. The second part to the Little Seven Conference Contest was held at Oswego on March 22, 1979 where the team put all their effort into attempting to give second place to Oswego. i uLuot mru MATHLETES — First row — Shari Perkins, Leanne Jones, Karol Schmitz, Wendy Hines. CHESS CLUB In 1976, Plainfield High was honored to wel- come a newly formed organization which was PHS's first Chess Club. Chess Club began competing at a relatively slow rate, the first year being in no matches. Gradu- ally, however, under the hard, optimistic influ- ence of Mr. Salisbury, the team began to shape up and they achieved some results and have now opened themselves to much more competi- tion. Another important change to note about the Chess Club might be the fact that the group was completely dominated by male members. Now at least 2 Plainfield High School girls have taken a step forward to prove that they too, have the imagination and intellect to play the game. Kerry Sweat! points out an illegal move. He requires that members attend all home football games, home basketball games and other school functions. This is the fourth year for the Kittens as an organization. This year, the kittens are limited to thirty girls, divided into teams of six. Each team had a leader, and the teams rotated the responsibilities. The first change came with the new sponsor, Mrs. Adele Hunt. The second change came with the Pommer- ettes’ new look — snappier routines and more style. The third change had been long awaited: After nearly ten years, the Poms got new uniforms. The result has been a quality squad with team co-opera- tion and enthusiasm. The Poms perform at home football and basketball games, and are starting a tradi- tion of entering competitions and attend- ing summer clinics. The Pommerettes are moving, changing, and bringing more spirit to PHS! I hope it doesn't ruin my weekend. (Sal. Jan. 13) Look at this snow. I’ve never seen so much! ... I hope it stops so I can go out tonight . . . Will this snow ever stop — it’s a blizzard! ... I won’t be going anywhere tonight. (Sun. Jan. 14) Terrific, the snow has finally stopped! . . . Why does it have to blow? We'll never get dug out of this . . . How much did we finally get? Twenty inches?! I'll never believe another weatherman . . . Have they cancelled school for tomorrow? . . . What! You missed the school closing announcement? . . . We don't have school tomorrow? Good. Maybe I'll go shopping if they open any roads. (Mon. Jan. 15) If sure felt good to sleep until noon ... I can catch up on my soap operas . . . Maybe we ll never have school again. (Tues. Jan. 16) Well, I can get to the end of our driveway. Now if they'll only plow the street! . . . Has the basketball game been called off? . . . If I don’t get out of this house soon. I'll go nuts! . . . Are the exams still going to be held Thursday and Friday? They can't — it would be impossible ... I hope school is called off for tomorrow ... I hope so, I don’t ever wont to go back. (Wed. Jan. 17) We have school!? ... all of the roads aren't even open . . . Look at the snow blow. Are they gonna keep us at school? . . . We re going home! . . . Route 30 and 59 and Naperville Road are closed! . . . Did they really bring kids back? . . . Will we have to spend the night and eat cafeteria food? . . . Why did they send us home? The wind stopped and the roads aren't that bad. Let's go shopping! (Thurs. Jan. 18) We have school today! ... I can’t get my st $ + car started! ... I wish I were home ... we don't have school tomorrow. (Fri. Jan. 19) How can we have exoms on Monday? I was gonna get my books to study from today . . . This will make it two Fridays in a row that I can't go out ... I hate this stupid weather . . . When are all the sports gonna be rescheduled? (The weekend was enjoyed, especially since Monday was a scheduled Teachers' Institute). (Tues. Jan. 23) I wish it would have snowed so we didn't have to come to school today . . . Did you hear that school is closed tomorrow because of the blowing and drifting snow . . . Now I have more time to study for exams. (Wed. Jan. 24) If this weather doesn’t stop soon. I'm going to Flo- rida — If I can get to the airport! . . . They can’t get the roads plowed, so we don't have school tomorrow. (Thurs. Jan. 25) Are we going to have to make up all of these days? . . . Did the PLAINSMAN really miss its deodline? . . . Are the roads still one lane ... I don't ever want to see another flake of snow. (Fri. Jan. 26) Is there school today? . . . No, too many of the roods are still barely passable. (School was held on January 29. On that day we finally began our exams. Now the semes- ter was almost over. Although many hours were spent at home, when the exams were taken many kids were overheard saying things like: I didn't have time to study. or I was separated from my books. or I got tired of studying. This winter we have been frozen by days of sub-zero weather and bur- ied by snow. We have broken two records: one for the heaviest snowfall for a winter and one for the amount of snow on the ground at any one time. As of this writing we ore won- dering whether we will ever see ice-less streets, green gross, or 90-degree days. Plainfield High School will always be changing, and the PLAINS- MAN will change along with it. This book not only captured changes of 1979, but of thirty-one years. All of the pictures of change from the contents page to here have featured PHS students, faculty, or activities. We have been able to capture only a small part of change; however, the memories contained in this book surely will spark others. In 1 949, when the PLAINSMAN was first issued, the senior class section con- sisted of only three pages; now it fills thirty-four. Then, the three sports were football, basketball, and baseball. Over the years teachers and students, fads and fashions, and clubs and organizations have come and gone. So it was in 1979. This year the student body gained a new principal along with new rules. The PLAINSMAN, itself, changed back to a spring delivery and put its original emblem back on the cover after a ten year absence. On these two pages, change is represented in many ways. Buildings that have changed . . . Seniors who tried to out-cheer Juniors . . . Classes that were enjoyed, classes that weren’t. . . Teachers that took the time . . . Lock- ers which were decorated, lockers that needed cleaning . . . Kids that showed off . . . Kids who laughed . . . The PLAINSMAN office left in confusion . . . Seniors who left pep assemblies one last time . . . Hallways which were silent and dark at the end of a day . . . For Seniors it is the time to meet changes as they head off to college and investigate new alternatives. We hope that this book has and will be fun, as well as memorable. It will be awhile before we forget the many changes at PHS during 19791!
