the PLAINSMAN Expressions Plainfield Consolidated Schools Volume Twenty-three 1971 Toward a Goal Expression is a part of the daily routine at Plainfield High School. Action, speech, and dress of the student body reveal their ideas, opinions, joys, and grievances. Expressions come in many forms, shapes, and sizes. Whether an individual making facial contor- tions during an exam, a class working together to produce a winning float, or a team effort in volleyball victory, expressions are the tools of communication. 3 Accomplishment Represents School Life Predicting Plainfield's victory over Oswego, the Senior class once again takes top honors. The dress code allows students to dress ac- cording to the current fashion trends, which was apparent by the mini, midi, and maxi ap- parel worn frequently. Events which seem commonplace serve as an outlet for student expression. 4 5 6 Hallways also help tell the story. Mr. Mont- gomery's bill-board announces items of ex- treme importance. Paddle passes serve as passports to travel the empty hallways during classtime. Expressions through photography or artwork can capture the many facets of life. 7 Faces Tell the Story Classmates in a crowd ap- pear only as a mass of faces. One group, yet actually there are many diverse indi- vidual personalities, each having his own characteris- tics. Each person tells the world who he is by the ex- pression on his face. Faces serve as mirrors of inner thoughts, expressions of per- sonalities. 9 Shouts of encouragement by Mr. Chavez push class competitors to do their best during Homecoming games as his anxious face shows concern. The fighting Wild- cats drive toward another touchdown with grim deter- mination. Hands on the key- board express a students feelings through the individ- ual's musical talent. Tears of joy were shown at the an- nouncement of Homecoming queen. Even the vehicle an individual drives reveals his personality. Let Them Be Known by Their Actions n The new curriculum pro- vides ample opportunity for the student to do his thing. Girls in shop class and boys dishing up supper have be- come a reality. Action on the trampoline, and an artist's projects give a view to other people of the individual's tal- ents. Apart from action, however, students sometimes find it necessary to study alone in the quiet solitude of the library. 12 13 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Needham — You, Mr. Needham, have listened to the needs of fac- ulty and students, and have seen the jobs carried out as superintendent of buildings and grounds since 1956. And, Mrs. Needham, as prin- cipal of- Central School, you have held our hands when we have had problems and have disciplined us fairly and wise- ly when we have been part of the problem. We are aware of your role as parents to three graduates of Plainfield Schools, and we know of your important weekly volunteer work at the hospital. Mrs. Needham has served as principal of the High School Annex, Indian Trail School, and Central School. She has per- formed her duties with Plainfield Schools since 1954. For All of Your Expressions of Kindness and Concern Mr. Needham and Mr. Burton Lambert have surprised and de- lighted homecoming parade au- diences for many years with clev- er, humorous, floats. In the 70 parade they portrayed Tiny Bim and Miss Bickie. 15 Interpreting Expressions Co-Editors — Leanne Holm Colleen Lonergan Business — Mary Sue Cassetto Brett Nemanich Art — Sally Hewlett Faculty — Dave Trampier Advisers — Mr. Larry Ellis Mrs. Sue Alexander Mr. Mike Alexander Seniors — Page 22 — Pat Birthisel Activities — Page 64 — Cindy Holm 16 Organizations — page 108 — Roberta Elyea and Margaret McIntyre Underclassmen — page 144 — Janice Marcks Sports — page 86 — Deb Grade School — page 192 — Dawn Milliron, Mark Selfridge Hutchings, Linda Sebby 17 Expressions From the Top Each year a group of Plainfield High School stu- dents and their sponsors collaborate to develop a volume that is their impression of the events and ac- tivities which sample everyday life in all the Plain- field schools. This year they have chosen the theme, Expressions, as a vehicle to help get that task ac- complished. All indications are that this year's Plains- man is truly an expression that is in keeping with its tradition. The staff is to be commended for another job well done. I would like also to extend my appreciation to the student body, the staff, and the community for their cooperation and support. It continues to be a plea- sure to serve a board of education and a community that are desirous of expressing their demand for a good educational program through support and co- operation instead of general dissent and protest. cf?. 18 Avon L. Nancy Fleming cries. Oh my stomach . Wi much determination, the Seniors pull ahead in the chariot race. Opposite page: The Juniors unite in the pole climbing contes . Hopping along to victory are the Seniors in the 3-legged race. Only after much resistance, the Juniors are pulled through the mud hole by the powerful Sophomores. 66 Anxiety, excitement and vigor filled the students of Plainfield High the week before homecoming. Stu- dents participating in the homecoming games dem- onstrated various skills from climbing slimy greased poles to the delicate toss of water balloons. In addi- tion to the traditional games — greased pole, char- iot race. 3-legged race, and tug-o-war, two new events were added — the water balloon toss and the filling, pound gaining pie eating contest. The week's competition ended as the suspenseful chariot race decided the winners of the competition. The class of 71 and Class of 73 tied with a total of 36 pts. 67 68 After Friday night's display of talents at the annual homecom- ing talent show, Bonnie Keeley bearing the Queen's crown’ and Steve Jones carrying the King's silver sceptor headed the proces- sion of the court. The crowning ceremony took place with last year's King. Bill Pommerening, and Queen, Shirley Wilson, relin- quishing their royalties to the 1970 Homecoming King, Jim Zelienka, and Queen, Deb Rus- sell. As her first duties the newly crowned queen distributed the awards to the winners of the tal- ent show: Best Overall, Kathy Themis; Best Ensemble, Gingham Girls: Best High School Solo, Sandy Lettsome: and Best Ele- mentary, Jennifer Williams. At the conclusion, the audi- ence filed out of the gymnasium to the baseball diamond where the sophomore class had pre- pared the last bonfire ever to be burned at Plainfield High due to pollution laws. Early Saturday morning entries began lining up for the home- coming parade. This year's theme was Theme Songs. The class of '7 I took first place in the high school division for the fourth consecutive year with their float Bozo's Grand March featuring a ten foot Bozo. The float was preceded by a grand march of seniors dressed like preschoolers, with a Mr. Ned and Bozo. The sophomores took honorable men- tion for their float Celebrate Our Victory. That afternoon the Wildcats defeated the Oswego Panthers 6-0. The Homecoming King, Queen, and Court were pres- ented during the half-time show given by the Plainfield High Marching Band. Saturday night's dance con- cluded the 1970 Homecoming weekend featuring the Speed Limit of Decatur, Illinois. 69 Parade Marches to Theme Songs 70 Bozo's Grand March the senior class ■float was the high school prize winner in the parade (opposite page, top). The freshmen entered Colonel Sanders' Kentucky Fried Chicken (lower left) and a grade school float, Green Acres, received plaudits from the crowd. Pictured on this page at the left is the sophomores’ Celebrate Our Vic- tory. Below, the seventh grade's entry is Roadrunner, Beep! Opposite page: Cheerleaders present — Coach Barnewolt and cheer the Wildcats to victory. Entertaining the crowd at half-time is the marching band. The Plainfield Wildcats down the Oswego Panthers. Intensity grows with each pull of the rope. 72 “It Couldn’t Happen to a Nicer Girl” 74 This year's fall play, It Couldn't Happen to a Nicer Girl, drew a record breaking attendance at each of its two performances. Under the direction of Mrs. Weiss and student directors. Sue Robinson and Jackie Jadrnak, a cast of fifteen dramatized the hu- morous story in three-quarters round. The preparations and practice were half the fun in the play’s production. Much work was done by crews, committees, directors, and the players in achieving the finished product. Maudie. a vivacious philosopher of boys and life in general reveals her system to her girl friends and shy cousin, Joy (Kathy Gitersonke). Maudie (Ann Ca- marena) applies her system of half truths and catchy lines to her boyfriend. Davy (Bruce Houck) and uses her cunning and know-how to make a catch for her socially retarded sister, Sylvia (Pat Camarena). She even tutors Joy in the fine art of boy catching. Maudie’s endeavors backfire when she ruins her father s bank loan and receives a good paddling from Jerry (Dave Van De Vort), Sylvia's boyfriend. Her system fails to work on her boyfriend but on the other hand it seems to work too well for Joy and loses her friends as a consequence. Maudie, however manages to achieve a happy ending making a new discovery, No line is the best .line of all. 75 Lettermen and Cheerleaders Honored Mr. Barnewolt started the as- leaders with red roses for their sembly by honoring the football devoted support and unceasing and cross-country lettermen. In spirit and drive, return, they presented the cheer- 76 Demonstrating the technique and power of the wrestling sport, Coaches Ike and Mow were the main attraction of the wrestling assembly. As a major side line, however, the season's wrestling team was an- nounced and presented to the student body. Ike Takes a Tumble . . . Wrestlers Take a Bow 77 Dust Sings Message The experience presented by Dust proved both entertaining and educational. Performing their songs. Dust'' was rewarded with a reception of laughter and enthusiastic attention. Highlights of the program were a personal birthday wish to a student and the distribution of concert tickets to a chosen few. Soon after, a silent audience listened as a mem- ber of Dust told of his experiences with drugs. 78 “Going Once . . . Going Twice . . . Sold!” Fists of greenbacks floated into the cashbox of the Fielder. As if they were marked slaves, the group of condemned teach- ers seemed to enjoy their fate. Each one with his own special tal- ents waited to be chosen. At first no response was the reaction of the crowd to the professional autioneer, but after two helpful gentlemen were picked from the audience things started jumpin'. 79 Cross Country Gives Intra- murals a Running Start This page: Juan Vela took first place in the cross-country two- mile run with the time of I 1:49 minutes. Sue Pennington re- ceived her first place trophy for her 9:19 mile run. The trophy case displayed awards for the in- tramural champs. Opposite page: Mrs. Forsythe captured second place for the women's faculty free-throw. Petra Torres crossed the finish line for second place in girls' cross-country. Don Paulson took second place for the boys'. Al Leidig, a senior, sank the winning shot in the intramural free-throw contest. Mr. Mattix accepted his trophy for first place in the men's faculty free throw. 80 81 82 “En Garde!’’ Opposite page: The Blue Bombers bombed the intramurals by taking first place. Harold Wright and Mrs. McCarthy par- ticipated in the intramural table- tennis competition. The Corn- field Spikers won first in the girls intramural volleyball. Jim Todd put spin on his winning ball. This page: The Cornfield Spikers battled the All-Stars for first place. 83 Senior Cats Cap Cage Competition The seniors were doubly victo- rious in the intramural basketball games. The Cornfield Trotters, a senior girls' team, trampled Pe- tra's Pack, representing the jun- iors, with a tremendous score of 26 to 8. To add to the entertain- ment, between games the band played our school song and a va- riety of popular tunes. During the second game, it looked as if the sophomore boys’ team, The Five Little Indians, was going to triumph over The Wild Bunch, playing for the seniors. However. The Wild Bunch quickly took over the lead and obtained a decisive victory. 84 Huskie Voices Fill Gym On their way to an Illinois State University choral clinic, the choir of Northern Illinois Univer- sity visited Plainfield High School in assembly this winter. Directed by Elwood Smith, the choir per- formed selections by Debussey, Schumann, and other noted com- posers. The concert depicted several stages of musical devel- opment. An explanation of the different moods and styles in music was also aiven. 85 “They’re the Best Bunch of Boys’’ Bottom row, left to right: John Boyer. John Eichelberger. Bob Fassiotto. Ron Miller. Plainfield's fleet-footed and determined athletes filled out another year of heavy schedules, hard practices and outstanding performances. This hard working bunch of boys learned that to win means vigorous training and endurance. Due to this knowl- edge, a great coach, and 25 laps around the school, a record of 8 wins and 7 losses was made for the year of 1971. Although red faces, tired muscles and damp track suits were common so was the spirit of victory during the cross-country season. Further individual efforts brought Most Valuable Runner title to Art Roberson and Bruce Hinzsche was named Most Improved Runner. 94 First row, left to right: Dave Halerburg, Stanley Ward, Jim Houle, Brent Ayer, Dave Peterson, Perry Brown, Dave Busching. Baker’s Bunch Crunch Foes for Victory In preparation for the 1971 Wrestling season the Wildcat wrestlers sweated it out both on the mat and before matches. Instead of lounging and snacking in the cafeteria, a wrestler was commonly viewed running off the pounds after school. They felt the agony of starvation but the ecstasy of win- ning a match. Even though a single Wildcat grappler was on the mat with his opponent, the whole team shouted their share of the work. Perched on the edge of a folding chair seemed to be a favorite position for Mr. Baker as he helped a wrestler score a ceverse. Other occasions brought an expression of concen- tration as he worked out the strategy of a possible pin against the matmen in the black head guards. Total teamwork, the driving forces of Coach Baker and Coach Schlott, plus an enthusiastic crowd of Plainfield fans combined to produce a 10-6 record. Which lead to a second place position in Lit- tle Seven Conference. In District Competition Juan Vela finished first, Bill Birkett and Tony Houle received second place. Steve Thompson and Mike Baish took third, and Vince Glasgow, and Dyke Overman were fourth place finishers. 97 First row, left to right: Barry Norcross. The sun rose to the sound of dribbling basketballs and running feet and set to the same. It was an unbelievable ef- fort put forth by the fighting 'cats of Plainfield High and their coach — Mr. Mattix. The win-loss record of 11-12, is merely a set of numbers that completely fail to illustrate the year's basketball battle. For example, the game won in the last two seconds by a final pivot shot or the cheering and excitement shown by the crowds are much more than words and numbers. Through losses and wins the team upheld their high spirits and code of sportsmanship. P.H.S. students can take pride and give gratitude for the out- standing name that the '71 team helped to give their school. First row, left to right: Don Bidgood. As each student thumbs through these pages it is the hope of the editors and staff that he can smile while remembering the fall play or shed a tear when thinking about the basketball game lost by one point with two overtimes. It is common knowledge that many cold winter nights are spent by the editors and staff to create the greatest Plainsman ever! Let it be known too that this group of people are well versed on how to enjoy their ac- tivities. It was evident by the end of the year that this staff could eat more, and talk quicker, than any other like organization in Plainfield. This was proven at the Christmas party, the night of the deadline, and the spring picnic. Co editors-in-chief: Leanne Holm and Colleen Lonergan, Advisor: Mr. Larry Ellis. Yes, some how they did it, due to the fantastic lead- ership and devotion of the Fielder staff, edi- tors, and sponsor, Mrs. Main, it was done. Not only did the number of Fielders published in- crease to one every other week, but the price was lowered to fifteen cents. An unbelievable cost for a personal, keep-for-always yet dispo- sable type informer of all the action at P.H.S. To help finance this bargain, a second teach- er auction featuring everything from seances to wax jobs was held. The special addition to this year's auction was the presence of a pro- fessional auctioneer. '114 From left to right: (bottom row) Dave .Van DeVoort. Sue Robinson, Harry Dubia. Brian Frink. This literary booklet was compiled by the Re- view's devoted members who spent many hours reading, rat- ing. typing, organizing student entries, and arguing with Mrs. McCarthy. As advisor, Mrs. M. has proven herself to have a jolly disposition (except when irritat- ed) and a very good sense of humor. The Green and White Re- view staff is made-up by editor- in-chief Gail Bangert, co-editor- in-chief Donna Wilrett, and a se- ries of editors and assistants to follow them around. These peo- ple are in charge of such things as poetry, short stories, essays, and features at the various grade levels. Only the best and most representative poetry and prose is published in this showing of dreams, fancies, and romance Plainfield style. Brains Blow Minds Over Buttons The outstanding journalists of Plainfield High School unite in membership to form the Quill and Scroll Society. Students qualify for membership through their superior literary and journalistic talents which they apply toward one of the three school publications: Plainsman, Fielder, or Green and White Review. Along with this ability, members must be upperclassmen, have attained a position in the upper third of their class and been recommended by their advisor. This year's events, which included selling booster buttons, finding more booster buttons, and selling them, were brought to a close by the annual publica- tion banquet. The literary leaders of this club de- cided on a forum-type rule which proved successful in all their endeavors. 117 Winter Concert High Note of Choral Season The Plainfield High School Grand and Concert Choirs start- ed on a new noth this year under the direction of Mr. Phillip Stutz. Mr. Stutz, who formerly worked with the Junior High School Choirs, has highlighted our music department through his excellent directing and refreshing music. The Choirs have once more proven their high ability as a mu- sical organization. The members of this group spent long, hard hours of practice in preparation for their various concerts. In the yearly Christmas and spring sere- nades the choirs exhibited excep- tionally fine showings. From left to right: (1st row) Sue Brown, Debbie Mauer. Carol Drazy, Carolyn Anderson, Carol Wright. G.A.A.'s purpose is to promote interest in the girls’ athletics and the ideals of sportsmanship, to develop responsible student leadership, and to pro- vide opportunities for high school girls to participate with each other in a variety of sports. The girls' ef- forts resulted in many new, healthy, and lasting friends. These girls carry their purpose throughout the sport year which includes: soccer, stunts and tum- bling, volleyball, basketball, bowling, softball, and archery. In between times are filled with such high- lights as the Mother-Daughter Bowl, playdays, state tournaments, Tupperware parties, and the year end Mother-Daughter Banquet. However, G.A.A. takes in more than girls' sports for the presence of this or- ganization is felt by all the students of Plainfield. It is their sponsoring of the Victory chain at homecoming and lick'em sticks before home games that highlights school spirit and revives school pride. 120 From left to right: (bottom row) Robyn Yahnke, Janet Ozbolt, Betty Durham, Georgia Stiteley. This club is not a new athletic opportunity, but a bunch of involved people dedicated to serving the Plainfield wrestling squad. Guiding this club is Mr. Schlott. Their numerous responsi- bilities included keeping scores and time at all matches and an- nouncing squad members. These girls shared many hours of work, excitement, suspense, and fun while achieving a goal and fulfill- ing a purpose. Trackettes Run Up a Winning Season The Trackettes are Plainfield High School’s newest athletic at- traction. Although they are not actual performers, it is inter- esting to note that since these girls began participating, a new and larger audience observes our track activities. A trackette is a combination recording secretary, cheerleader, score-keeper, and co-ordinator all in one. Under the guidance of Mr. Halberg and Mr. Lange, the girls of this organization do more than come to a sport and watch; they participate. They work with our cross country and track teams to show, and more impor- tant, to prove to them that some people do care. From left to right: Janet Ozbolt. Letter-Getters Display Brawn The Varsity letter is a status symbol at any school; however, at this high school an extra benefit is the privilege of belonging to'the Green and White Club. For it is only a chosen few who have charged fearlessly onto one or more of the athletic battle- fields with a deep sense of school spirit and a driving determination to light that Victory Light. Plainfield’s first dance of the year was sponsored by this organization to finance their upcoming activi- ties. The sale of Green and White telephone books also provided an extra monetary boost. The mem- bers of the Green and White Club attended many outside activities which included a Blackhawks’ hock- ey game, a pro basketball game and a Chicago baseball game. The year was concluded with a fare- well banquet honoring all senior members. 123 Photographers Leave Us in the Dark What lurks behind the door marked 408A camera club ? This is a question asked by many — answered by few. It is ru- mored that when the moon is full, weird nois- es, odd howls and phrases like full house, pay me come from behind that opening. What does that structure house? Wild laughter and loud music pour out through the vents and key hole, way after the dark hours have arrived (sometimes 9:00). Of course, the whole year was not spent in this room but some of the most outstand- ing pictures to be produced in Plainfield came out of it. Between clicking shutters and displaying their hardware the photography club took out time to visit the lights of Chi- cago and other areas of interest. We may never know the truth of that room but it def- initely added to a well developed club year for these photographers. From left to right: (Members of the troika) Kathy Carter, Donna Cowger. Researchers Do the Real Thing Time: 1970-71, Place: room 401, Par- ticipants: Science and Math Club mem- bers and Mrs. Sue Blaylock, advisor. Curiosity may have killed the cat but it seems to have better results at Plainfield. Due to curiosity and a little know-how the members of this organization have prov- en science is more than textbooks and broken test tubes. Through scientific ex- periences rather than osmosis, our future scientists and mathematicians have found the answers. If they couldn't find the an- swers themselves, the Science and Math Club members went to those who could. Field trips seem to be the favorite activi- ty, for the club went to Dresden Nuclear Power Station, Argonne National Labora- tory, and opened the observatory for tours and lectures. The focal point of the year was the annual Science Fair where projects that were planned for months in advance were exhibited bringing this club's efforts to a shining finish. 125 Arise and Dissent Wildcats' thoughts, problems, and ideas were brought together during the sessions of this year's Student Council, under the leadership of president Bob Bostanche and advisor Mr. Baker. This was truly a year of group leadership. Due to the hard work and perseverance of seven faculty members and seven council representatives, an offi- cial dress code was established. The council's greatest accomplishment was the in- troduction of open evening meetings designed to let students, faculty, and interested people of Plainfield hear and speak on the environment in and surround- ing this school. To cover finances the council took on the project of selling jackets, sweaters, and shirts bearing a Plainfield insignia. This project was not only success- ful but helped boost school spirit and pride in a practical way. There was a sad ending to this year's council due to the loss of a fantastic advisor, Mr. Baker. For it was he and the Student Council who have led and represented the students and activities of our school. Officers (sitting) Johnna Burnetti. (Standing) Bob Bos- tanche. Deb Flagg. In the fall, the air was filled with lines from the season's production, It Couldn't Happen to a Nicer Girl. When the snow fell and the wind blew, Taming of the Shrew was given, on the small spotlit stage by speech students of Lewis-St. Fran- cis College. As the leaves began to appear the first spring production solely backed by this organization was given. However, there was more to this club than saying they did this and they did that. Everyone of these dramatic fanatics participated in some way to help their club's performances. For many, it was not lights, lines, and names on the program, but back drops to be painted, tickets to be sold, make-up crews to be readied and other forgotten, but valuable, jobs to be done. To initiate the year's activities the french- men packed a picnic. This outing served as a getting organized, as well as, a welcoming meeting for their new advisor, Mrs. Joan Kirby. The selling of red and green Christmas candles helped to finance their future aspira- tions. These included the celebration of Witch- es' Sabbath and a Candlemas party of pan- cakes. They also prepared a spring banquet in honor of the club's senior members, which con- cluded their eventful year. From left to right: Mrs. Joan Kirby, advisor: Nancy Knowles. Vice President: Miss Shore, advisor: Jack Ko- nowalski, Treasurer. Scholars Dramatize Death Scene Et tu Brute? In reality, those words did notbring a premature climax to the Latin Club s activities. Those pseudo-descendents of Caesar began their year with a get-to-know-you Halloween party sponsored by advisor Miss Shore and Latin Club officers as follows: President, Gerry Agnich: Vice President, Mary Sue Cassetto: Treasurer, Jack Konowalski; and Secretary, Sandy Millitello. As the year progressed the organization held a bake sale-bazaar and a garage sale with other language clubs. Their big activities were the traditional Roman banquet, with slave auction and Illinois Latin Day in Chicago. This year's money making efforts were used to send outstanding language students to the foreign study league and to the convention in Oklahoma for the Junior Classical League. 129 Revolution was the key word of this organization's 1971 season. Once known to thousands as German Club, the LLF (Lappland Liberation Federation) has turned over a new leaf and developed a new goal. It is the purpose of this club to free the people of Lappland from foreign rule. However impossible this ideal is, it is a great excuse for getting together to talk and to plan the strategy of their next move. On the constructive side, the LLF visited the ballet in Chicago. This gave way to more strategy and food and laughter and the finale of a fun-filled year. They began with a crusade to the Universi- ty of Wisconsin for an exciting football game and funfilled tour of the campus. The grand finale was a banquet of tacos, tortillas, and enchiladas at a Mexi- can restaurant. The organization's other activities included a proj- ect a month such as tobogganing and visiting other Spanish clubs in the area. Spanish students of all lev- els look forward to the month of December, for it is at this time that pinatas sway and certain teachers learn to duck. The raising of funds was achieved through car washes and a bake sale. One thing is for sure, whatever happens Plainfield can always count on this club for something differ- ent, exciting and definitely Spanish. Corner Garnered Honors by Orators The orators of Plainfield High School gathered to- gether to form the 1970-71 Speech Club. New addi- tions to this organization’s schedule were their night meetings, which were used to discuss money-making projects and future plans. To boost the spirits of their secretary-treasurer, the Speech Club sold car stickers to the auto owners (and users) of Plainfield High. These funds were used to back their visits to radio and television stations and especially trips to the professional theaters of Chicago. Along with the enjoyment and appreciation of the speech arts, this group promotes the participation at speech and debate contests and holds a yearly honor program for students receiving degrees of the Na- tional Forensic League. 132 Librarians Become Fine Group Mark Twain, Will Shakespeare, Daphne du Maurier or even Jacqueline Susann never had it as well as the students of Plainfield High. The 70-71 Library Club proved to be the most active and purposeful ever. The club had a new sponsor this year, Mrs. Martin. With her to plan and the ever present book sales to finance, the organization participated in numerous projects. Their accom- plishments included a prize winning homecoming float, hosting of the DesPlaines Valley Student Li- brary Association, uniting with the Spanish Club to end a fun-filled carolling expedition and begin- ning a program to inform Plainfield students of the pressing problems of the day. With the year completed, all agreed that Mrs. Stiteley's chocolate chip cookies were fabulous, the vertical file should be loosened, and Moore's garage sure gets cold after nine o'clock. 133 From left to right: Jay Stiteley. President: Dave Udell. Vice- President: Nina Talbott, Treasurer: Mary Schaller, Secretary. Secretaries Take Careful Notes Talented typists, fabulous filers, bountiful book- keepers and wistful thinkers mingle to form the F.S.A. A combination of hard work and varying fun activities ready this organization's members for the tough business world ahead. The future secretaries of this school are supported by the Louis Joliet Chapter of the National Secretaries Association and their school sponsor is Mrs. Gloria Racchini. The club's year began with a welcoming initiation for new members. Other enjoyable events included a style show from Musser’s Sport Shop, a trip to United States Steel, a Christmas party and year end banquet featuring the Miss Future Secretary con- test. As in the past, all senior members of this club spent one day working in a business office located near this area. It was a unanimous conclusion by all that the 1970-71 year was the most active and fun-filled year the club has had. Carolyn Kastman, Secretary: Deb Gitersonke, Vice President: Holly Erickson, Corresponding Secretary. Pat Collins, Treasurer Irene Karales, President 134 Future Teachers Sum It Up To spend a lifetime as a teacher requires patience, kindness, understanding and the ability to stand firmly in a time of emergency. Many students feel this is the profession they wish to enter. Through Fu- ture Teachers of America a student can find out the behind the scene life of a teacher and if it is for him. Certain members of this organization participated in a teacher's aid program at Central School for on the spot experience. Another service performed by this group was the directing of parents at Open House during the fall. For activities, the club visited colleges to investi- gate their curriculum and facilities in relationship to the needs of a teacher-to-be. These field trips were financed through such money making projects as sell- ing soap products. All in all this club worked toward a very exciting year and a promising future. From left to right: Mr. Johnson, sponsor: Joy Leupold. vice president: Carol Warmbier. secretary-treasurer: Gail Bangert, presi- dent. 135 Medies Enjected With Enthusiasm Casting aside the home remedies taught to them by their grandmothers, Plainfield's future physicians and healers probed into the true meaning of a medi- cal career. The home remedy that did seem to work was the care shown while caroling to the ailing hearts of Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home. Other, more lei- sure activities included lectures by Mrs. Lorenc, Vol- unteer Director of St. Joseph's Hospital; student nurses from Plainfield; and Mrs. Lecrone, Director of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital. A special drug abuse program was given for this group by Mr. Ralph Bryson, a local pharmacist. Band Marches in Rhythm With Success The ranks, files, and diagonals of the Plainfield High School Marching Band paraded into another year of glory and awards. To the tune of guide right, louder woodwinds, and dress center- dress,” hours of hot, long, tedious practice were completed. It was this tremendous effort which left the name of Plainfield engraved in the minds of their audiences. However, the accomplishments and recognition this band received would be seriously diminished without their driving force — Mr. Jones. Due to Mr. J.'s outstanding backing and leadership, this musical organization collected honors throughout the Mid- west. The highlights of the year took place at the Traverse City and the Muskegon Music Round-up and the State Fair in Wisconsin; Michigan City, Indi- ana; I.S.U. Band Day; and such parades in Illinois as the ones in Morris, Naperville. Lemont, and Romeo- ville. This is not mentioning the Midwest Musical Fes- tival hosted in Plainfield and all the honors yet to come. 137 From left to right: (l t row) LuAnn Heinselman, Liz DuBree, Nora Bender.
