It is true of any organization or institution that there are many people who play an integral part in its make-up who are never recognized. In a school, as in a movie, there is really a “Cast of Thousands7’ who work together to achieve an ultimate goal. This year, the goal of the yearbook staff is to record the efforts of our “Cast of Thousands” in a lasting tribute, the 1966 Plainsman. To those of you who shared a major role in its production we say ‘ Thank You” for your efforts. By your hard work this volume of the Plainsman with its theme “Cast of Thousands” has become a reality. With- in the cover of this book is assembled in picture and print the accomplishments, the feelings, and the hopes of a tremendous number of individuals, truly a “Cast of Thousands.” In the future as the script unfolds and each member of the Cast plays his or her role upon the stage of life and human affairs, it is our sincere hope that each of you will find satisfaction, success, and happiness in great abundance. 2 MR. He has held such offices as: president of the Illinois Hard- ware Merchants Organization, Secretary-Treasurer of the Plainfield Cemetery Association, Presi- dent of the Plainfield Fire Department, Commander and Adjutant of the American Legion, and is a member of the draft board. Mr. Jones has been a member of the school board for 30 years and president since 1956. In this capacity, he has proven his interest in the youth of Plainfield. Under his capable leadership, the board has done much in furthering the quality of our school and Plainfield in general. Only through the interest of its citizens can a community grow, learn, and prosper. For his many years of service to our community, Mr. R. I. Jones has been chosen by the 1966 Plainsman staff as its “leading man” in the “Cast of Thousands”. 4 FRONT ROW, Left to Right: Walter C. Leahigh, Samuel Saxon, School Lawyer; and George Niver. 2WW SducaXiott Plainfield Schools Board of Education is an action and interested community or- ganization. It holds a meeting the third Monday of every month. However, these meetings are not the only time the board spends planning the betterment of our school system. Many other meetings and functions are attended by the members. A few representatives from the board are invited to each soc-hop that is given. This year, the School Board purchased new uniforms for the entire High School Band. They also approved, for the seniors, a trip to Washington, D.C., for which the class of ’66 had been hoping for several years. These and all the other things are greatly ap- preciated by the students of Plainfield High School. 6 s4cUKi U tnaton z tcC DALE E. METZGER, B.S., M.S. Leaving mothers at doorways, toting their schoolbags, one hundred four kindergarten pupils struck out on the path in an educational adventure story. Grade school memories, now dimmed by the brilliance of high school days, are not completely lost. How many of us have been locked in a locker? How can we forget those wonderful trips to the Green, or shooting marbles at recess? Our classmates have revealed many and varied talents. Mary Alice Overman and Bill Jewett sang their way into the hearts of the PTA as the fifth grade presented “Hansel and Gretl”. Bob Davis and Dave Kurtz developed a very efficient method of dropping “thread bombs” out of the windows in seventh grade, but were forced against their wills to also invent a way to quickly rewind the thread. Mr. Behrens, it seems, was their coach. Another of our more celebrated members was Trudi Harzheim, the ideal (?) Christmas angel. Our numbers had grown to one hundred forty-seven, and complete with new suits and first high heels, we gave our Eighth Grade Promotion performance. The not-really-so-timid freshmen who entered Plainfield High School in Septem- ber, 1962, w’ere led by Bruce Drauden, Mary Alice Overman, Cheryl Bennett, and Roy Sanchez. Our homecoming attendant was Sandy Selfridge. As sophomores, the “production staff” busily checked coats under the guidance of officers Chip Harshbarger, Rick Brocies, Sandy Selfridge, and Barb Kinzler. Mary Alice Overman represented the sophomores at homecoming festivities. Our junior year revealed the “hams” of the class of 1966. Two receptive audi- ences viewed our old fashioned “meller-drammer”, More to Be Pitied Than Censured, and cheered for our hero, pitied our heroine, chuckled at our hen-pecked husband, and booed our villain. After many long hours and frenzied nerves, the prom we had long awaited became a reality; and we won’t “let it be forgot that once there was a spot known as Camelot.” Ourheadliners that year were Lanny Pfeffinger, Jim Peterson, Sharon Haire. and Kathy Lyman, our officers, and Jackie Bennett, our homecoming attendant. Senioritis struck with all its furor, but the seniors managed to regain enough strength to withstand the rigors of a trip to Washington, D. C., during Easter va- cation. The directors of the final performance of the Little Theater Company were Bob Zimmer, Jack Stoner, Tracie Bougon, and Judy Grate. Our stars included our lovely homecoming queen. Mary Alice Overman, senior attendant Marsha Kuri- ger, and our Finnish import, Markku Viitasalo, our first foreign exchange student. One hundred thirty-five seniors gave a command performance on June 7, 1966. Suddenly aware of the finality of the event, we received our diplomas realizing that we had “So little done, so much to do”. 47 'l uta zCa Recognized by his friendly smile, his quick wit, and his shy, yet personable, presence, Markku Viitasalo has been an influential member of the cast. As an ex- change student from Kokkola, Finland, “Mark,” has added to the life of all the cast. He has given the rest of us tales of his life in Finland, and he has con- tributed to publications. Quill and Scroll, and Student Council. His life here has been hectic, since he takes part in most school spon- sored activities, and he attends meetings with other exchange stu- dents at nearby schools. “Mark Finn”, as he has titled himself, is an honor student. Be- coming such, of course, is quite an accomplishment, since he was not too familiar writh the • language and he was in a new environ- ment. He adapted well. He has said, “I no longer feel like an exchange student.” It is hoped that he will take much of his ex- periences with him as it is felt that he has left much for us. 48 From left to right: Mr. Don Aimone, Advisor; Miss Sarah Godar, Advisor; Linda Needham; President, Steve Tritle. Vice-President; Kathy Morris, Secretary; Carol Wood, Treasurer. “Pardon” and the clicking of heels are sounds most frequently heard from room 6 as the Juniors prepare for a busy year. By fattening the student body with candy sales at games and lunch hours, the class has been earning their income most profitably. Their diligent efforts proved most successful since that colossal, “Blasting Kaneland,” won first prize for construction. They were proudly represented by their Homecoming at- tendant, Jackie Sebby. However, besides beating their brains out while volunteering their most faithful work during these most demanding months, they earned their real name as upperclassmen as they sponsored the big event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Added to the thrills was the arrival of their corroded class rings. They are anxiously looking forward to a most exciting year, as they take their places as Seniors. 49 James Leonard Jolene Garland James Kathy Aliens Agnich Allen Aliff Annis Arnold Charles James Linda Thomas Robert Stephanie Azman Bennett Bennett Beverly Bidgood Blessing Nancy James Paul Ronald • Jerry Timothy Bloodgood Bonna r Bougon Brands Braun Brock way Pamela Roger Dennis Linda Mary Ronald Brown Brown Bucciarelli Bulian Ca pod ice Carey Barbara Judith Joseph 50 Carey Carlisle Casette Wayne Ben Raymond Chapman Cisneros Coclasure Richard Kent Paul Geraldine Jacqueline Carla Collins Corrie Crittenden Culik Davis Dean Teri Marvin Mark John Jill Barbara Dempsey Dickerson Donnelly Duckworth Eaton Eldred James Marilyn Ronald English Evans Failing Larry David Ruth Ann Faren Fiday Fiday Robert Flagg Michael James Beverly Christine Franke Cans Galons Georgakas William Findlay William Glass Lydia Gonzalez Terri Hagerman Belinda Hampton 51 flci uon4. The sophomores entered P.H.S. this year with a completely different attitude than they had possessed last year. They were now accustomed to the routine of high school life. Their homecoming parade float was entitled “Happiness is . . . Arriving in Heaven.” Due to the united effort, their float received the prize for the best construction. Their class was represented at the homecoming activities by their attendant, Anita Petersen. Why didn’t I start early and keep up ... I never knew we would have to remember everything.” When does a freshman become aware of his primary purposes—to learn, to think, to memorize, to re-act ? The class of 1969 hoped to discover by the end of their first semester, their needs, their deficiencies, their goals; in short themselves. Many made the discovery. The purpose of the Wig and Mask Club is to promote a high-degree of interest in dramatics. Each month this purpose was ful- filled by members putting on play readings and pantomime. As the year progressed, however, the meandering dramatists couldn’t stay put, so they traveled to Chicago, not once, but twice! They viewed “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” and the musical “The Sound of Music.” One of the largest responsibilities placed upon the two-year old club was the production of all-school plays. Newly introduced this year, the Fall and Spring plays were deemed a great success. The nerve-shattering, but highly memorable year, was drawn to a close with the election of officers for the forth-coming year. FRONT ROW (Left to right): Richard Madison (“Jug” Brown . Ladies, hy Edwin S. Day. The play was a comedy about two sisters and their brother, who, in order to keep their house, wanted to turn it into a girl’s dormi- tory with their two aunts as matrons. A post- ponement of the Aunt’s arrival threatened to spoil the dormitory plan. So, Brother and his sister's boyfriend were convinced to imperson- ate the two aunts until their arrival. The un- timely declaration of a professor to propose marriage to one of the aunts: the arrival of various students; and the uncompromising, nearsighted Dean, complicated things and added to the merriment of all. The Night of January 16th By: Ayn Rand The spring play, closing the 1965-1966 dramatics season, was a dramatic study of a woman fight- ing for her life against insurmountable obstacles. Karen Andre, prime suspect in the case, is accused of murdering her employer, Bjorn Faulkner, by pushing him off the roof of his luxurious penthouse. The witnesses contributed a great deal to the suspense and action of the play, through their con- flicting stories. In this three act comedy-drama many intimate secrets were bared by the probing questions of the two attorneys. Defense Attorney Stephens defends his client with power and determination. District Attorney Flint, on the opposite side, tried to convict the defendant of first-degree murder. The Night of January 16th contained unusual assets for the enjoyment of the audience and players. The first was the jury, chosen completely from the audience and paid for its duty. The second asset of the play was the two endings made necessary by the unpredictable verdict of the jury. Su- spense, conflict, unrequited love, all mixed with lighter moments of comedy made for a highly en- joyable play. MATRON ...................... Phyllis Werner BAILIFF ............................ The Business Staff took the first big step by selling ads to businesses who patron- ize the book. A poor money making project was the sock-hop which was a complete flop. The most suc- cessful event sponsored by the PLAINSMAN was the magazine sales. A rollicking skit promoted en- thusiasm among the high school students. Twenty-five thousand dollars was brought in by the high school and forty-five thousand dollars by the grade school, making a total of seventy thousand dollars worth of magazine subscriptions. More students than ever indicated strong emotional feelings and dug deeply into their pockets to produce toads, marbles, hairpins, and fifty pennies necessary for the reserva- tion of this production. As the end of March approaches, the staff is found working late into the wee hours of the morning in order to meet their final deadline. Organized in 1953, The Future Nurses Club of Plainfield High School has continued to carry out its purpose in encouraging students to choose nursing as their future profession. During the school year, the members have become better acquainted with the work of nurses and other people in the field of medicine. They've heard several speakers at their monthly social meetings and taken field trips to various hospitals. Through these speakers and trips, the members are able to see the many sides of the medical profession. Each in- dividual can then decide which phase of medicine she may wish to follow and develop as her ca- reer. F.N.A., sponsored by Miss Nancy Moorman, has completed another successful and profitable year. The club hopes that in some way, it has helped to meet the ever increasing need for more nurses. 98 TftinJicCe LYING: Linda Schroedcr. Mrs. McCarthy, the club advisor, dedicates many seventh hours and weekends free time at the aid of the bud- ding botanists and aspiring astrologists to finish their projects for the local, district, and state competition. Tours to Argonne National Labora- tory and Amoco Chemical Company have been a few of the many activities involved in the club’s program. The National Honor Society is composed of outstanding students who excel in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The Plainfield Chapter of the National Honor Society, established in 1958, wishes to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of PHS. During the past year, the NHS, under the direction of Miss Joyce Senffner, sponsored two main ac- tivities: a panel discussion and a tutor program. The panel discussion, which was held during Christmas vacation, was led by PHS graduates who are now attending college. They talked about the transition from high school to college. The discussion was attended by all who were interested in this topic. Through the tutor program. NHS members and other scholastically qualified students helped students who were having difficulties in their school subjects. 103 4 Scaunten to Left to Right: Lanny Pfeffinger, Mike Zbacnik, Jody Carlson, Don Scott, Bob Sedlacck. Girls’ and Boys’ State is a mythical govern- ment that is divided into cities and counties. These young people are then elected officials as a result of their campaigning and speech making. Our first year in the Little Seven Conference has truly proven to be an experience. Winning the last two of our seven conference games shows that we are capable of competing against harder teams. The statistics show only scores; they don’t show the work and sweat that the football team went through to gain a place in the new conference. Proof of our team’s capability has been shown both within the high school and by outside choosings. In our own school, Rick Brocies received the most valuable offensive and defensive line- man; Bob Sw'anson was the most valuable offensive hack; while John Dolan was the most valuable defensive back. Brent Etnyre was awarded the scrapbook for the best all-around senior. Outside of Plainfield, other recommendations were made. Rick Brocies was named for the first team offense in All Conference (chosen by conference coaches) and first team defense in All Area. He received honorable mention in All State, All Chicago Area, and All Suburban. Bob Long was named for the second team defense in All Area and All Conference. Despite our unsuccessful season of last year, our first basketball season in the Little Seven Conference has shown great improvement. We ended the year with 14 wins and 11 losses overall and an even 7-7 in con- ference standings. The players displayed their true sportsmanship in accepting defeats graciously and victories modestly. Self-determination proved of great value to those boys who were elected as leaders and valuable play- ers to their team. All last winter, these epicures journeyed to the cafeteria every noon to gorge themselves with nutritious lunches of celery, carrots, and apples. Their 9-4 record indicates the self-punishment paid off. Furthermore, their debut in the Little Seven Conference produced a very respectable 5-1 record, which shows that our wrestlers are well accustomed to tough competition. At the 1966 Naperville District Tournament, Mike Zbacnik swept the championship honors at 127 lbs., while Rick Holley and Gene Rapp took second places at 103 and 112 lbs., respectively.
