Their stay on Earth has ended. To Heaven they have gone. God’s infinite love enfolds them. There’s no more need to quest. Their souls’ long journeys have ended, And they have come to rest. —Ramona Kaatz Class of 1963 D R E C T 0 R 5 1 ■ FACULTY 2r and ADMINISTRATION WALTER G. NIEHUS, B.Ed., M.A. Superintendent A Message From Our Producer ... It is a genuine pleasure to have this opportunity to offer my thanks and congratulations to the Staff for the time and efforts they have given to publish this, the fifteenth volume of the Plainsman. The theme “On Stage’ I feel is a particularly fitting one, especially at this time when Education is so much in the spotlight. Each day in this world of more and more technology and automation the value and importance of more and better education is becoming increasingly apparent. The citizens of this School Dis- trict, through their generous and never-ending support, have adequately “Set the Stage” by providing teach- ers, buildings, and the instructional tools. It is our sincere hope that each student will make every effort to take his or her place “On Stage,” that is, to take full advantage of all the opportunities our school has to offer. By doing this each girl and boy will become a happier and more useful individual in society. Directors EDWIN G. GROH. B.E., M.S. Twenty-five of these first graders will be on stage for the last curtain call. The grade school days were the first act in the drama of our education. The second act, still fresh in our memories, was junior high. Along with “Readin’, Ritin’, and Rithmetic,” two years of basketball, band, home economics, and shop were climaxed with the presentation of our certificates of promotion. We were then ready for the third act of “Our Plainfield Education.” Quiet and uncertain during those first high school days, we soon adjusted to the new setting and plunged wholeheartedly into high school life. We selected as our directors for that first scene: President. Steven Bronk; Vice-President, David Harsh- barger; Secretary, Patricia Flagg; and Treasurer, Gail Eaton. Soon it was Home- coming time. All through grade school we had memories of Homecoming, but the one our freshman year was special. This year the float would really be our own work and we could take part in the other festivities. A separate frosh-soph cheerleading squad was inaugurated that year. In those days before the completion of the high school gym, games were played at Central School. The boys can remember playing basketball among the pipes in the basement, while the girls played games such as Poor Pussy and “If You Love Me Honey Smile” in P.E. classes. The scene was shorter than we had anticipated and suddenly we were sophomores. We returned with the confidence of a year’s experience and the knowledge that we were no longer the “newcomers.” Already the cry for making money was heard. Often after games and other social functions the hard-working sophomore was seen counting and sorting coat-check tags. Directors for scene two were Steven Bronk, David Harshbarger, George Jones, and Gail Eaton. e opened scene three as upper classmen. Our leading lady was President, Mary Peterson, with Richard Jewett, Ruth Ann Burke, and Ronnie Evans in supporting roles. The “Movers” were on the move. Hawking pennants, washing cars, vending coke and candy, and selling lavatory passes and elevator keys to the so-called gullible freshmen were among our many money-raising schemes. Despite a sudsing stream and a sinking ceiling, our prom, “Neptune’s Palace,” was a big success—the highlight of our junior year. On November 10, we presented Jesse Stuart’s biographical sketch, “The Thread That Runs So True,” and later that year the “Movers” played a large part in the success of the musical comedy “Oklahoma.” Daniel Bosse, Larry Kinley, Sue Sauvageau, and Ronnie Evans starred our senior year. Homecoming came quickly. Mary Ann Mutz reigned as queen and Patricia Flagg served as attendant. We won the distinction of being the class never to win first prize for a float. Though the senior boys produced “Carmen,” the tragic farce, the last test of our dramatic ability came in the senior production “The Mouse That Roared.” On June 3, 1963, the curtain fell, but a new curtain opened, revealing a new stage of life lying before us. Soon after school began, the curtain rose on Homecoming, the most dramatic act of the fall semester. The plot was similar to previous years, but, as always, complications arose with the choosing of float themes, a queen and her attendants, and dates for the Homecoming dance. As the big week- end rapidly approached, there was the usual rush to complete floats. On Friday evening the bon-fire at the Village Green set everyone’s spirits aglow. Dwight was burned in effigy as the crowd cheered on! The second scene opened at the high school audi- torium where the annual talent show gave towns- folk a chance to perform.. Returning Stars Honored The third scene dawned on Saturday morning as the parade assembled. Floats of every shape rolled down Lockport Street past the judges’ stand. But they did have one thing in common, the general theme, “Inter- national Holidays.” Many bands set the tempo of the scene. The plot thickened as a crowd assembled at the Eastern Avenue athletic field where the ’Cats were about to clash with Dwight. A tragic defeat threatened to dampen our spirits, but the dance was yet to come. The curtain rose on the final scene at nine in the evening at Central School Gymnasium. The evening was climaxed by the crowning of Queen Mary Ann Mutz. Senior Pat Flagg, Junior Jennifer Raddatz, Sophomore Diane Scott, and Freshman Sandra Self- ridge attended her. All of the choruses participated in the Annual Christmas Concert and the Spring Choral Concert. On December 20, the hardiest members of each chorus went caroling at 6:00 A.M, and then enjoyed doughnuts and hot choco- late in the school cafeteria. In April, the Mixed Chorus and A Cap- pella Choir, and numerous solos and en- sembles combined forces to compete in the state music contest. Mrs. Bennet, a scatterbrained woman, spends her time trying to find husbands for her five daughters. Mr. Bennet, her sardonic husband, looks on with distaste. The curtains close with Elizabeth engaged to Mr. Darcy and Jane betrothed to Mr. Bingley. Lydia is married to Mr. Wickam, and Mrs. Bennet is laying her traps for eligible young men for Mary and Catherine. Tully Bascom is commissioned as the leader of a small band of soldiers for the Grand Duchy of Fenwick which has declared war on the United States in hopes of losing it to receive financial aid. Using the traditional weapon of the Duchy, the longbow, Bascom actually gains victory without firing an arrow; rather, he forces surrender of the United States by capturing the Q-bomb, new ultimate weapon developed by a Columbia University professor. The confused Duchess of the Monarchy is disappointed at the outcome for she fears that Fenwick will have to spend millions to rehabilitate the United States. Gloriana and her cabinet finally realize that their country with a population of six thousand is the most powerful nation of the world. With fear of a grab for power, and hope that her marriage to Tully will ease this situation, Gloriana proposes to the woodsman, soldier, and statesman. The Duchy settles a suit for peace with the United States, which, in fact, is the sole importer of Fenwick’s only product, by receiving a million dollars in aid. Fenwick retains the super-weapon; and, thus, the roar of the mouse is heard over all the noises caused by hostile nations of the world. 64 Publicity Agents Left to Right: Ruth Burke, make-up editor; Alan Leahigh, editor-in-chief; Mary Lang, business manager. Bob Lietzow Sports Editor Charlene Taylor Stall Secretary Helen Wilson Distribution Manager A good student newspaper relates its own convictions. These con- victions should lead the thinking of the school, not follow it. This has been the aim of the ’FIELDER during the current year. In August, before the school year opened the editors, advisor and a completely new division, a business staff, was added. The pages were enlarged to twice the size of previous years; four columns were used instead of three, and magazine paper gave way to a preferred newsprint. Without the efforts of the new business staff in meeting the print- ing costs, the ’FIELDER subscription would have been twice as much for the student. Through the year the business staff worked diligently getting ads, selling Christmas cards, promoting dances and holding bake sales. The reporting staff worked equally as hard in writing, proof- reading, and editing stories as well as laying out the pages. Yet even with the thirty-eight years of news behind it, this year’s ’FIELDER would not have been possible without the unselfish help of the advisors, Darlene James and Betty Leaman, and printer Irving Johnson. left to Right, FIRST ROW: Diane Scott, Arnitta Amhold, Cindv Hayward. Student Council Activities The Student Council began the school year by holding a “Get-Acquainted” dance to welcome new students. Fund-raising projects included a sock-hop, the “Little Black Book” sale in December, and the P.H.S. sweat- shirt sale in February. The profits of these undertakings were used, in part, to purchase pennants (for the gym- nasium) which represent the six Fox Valley Conference schools. Continuing past efforts, the Council has been consolidating the funds of graduated classes into a landscape fund which will be presented to the school. The Council sponsored the traditional Twirp Season, March 6-8. A series of discussions between members of the faculty and student leaders to promote better school relations, was another student council project. Or,A.A., . . . For their at- tendance the girls receive points which are a means of gaining various awards at the end of the year. G.A.A. was engaged in many activities throughout the year. Some of these were play days at other schools, district officers’ meetings, and the postal bowling and basketball tournaments. In December the club sponsored a Pa-Me Night. In January the senior members were rivals of the women faculty in volleyball, and in March the club co-operated with the F.H.A. to sponsor “Crazy Capers,” the annual all- school activity night. Last summer. Sue Needham and Sue Hasenyager represented the club at G.A.A. camp, which was held at Conference Point, Williams Bay, Wisconsin. The Language Clubs Study Foreign Dialogue The three language clubs of Plainfield High School are organized to promote interest and encourage the use of their respective languages. Total membership in the three clubs is 251 students, representing about forty-five percent of the school enrollment. The I atin Club was the original language club. Sponsored by Mrs. Niehus, the club, as a unit, was elected treasurer of the Junior Classical League Society of Illinois. Last summer, four members and the sponsor at- tended the National Junior Classical League Convention in Billings, Montana. Part of the expenses of the con- ventioners was paid by the club. This year the proceeds of money-raising projects are to be used to send representatives to the 1963 convention in Lawrence, Kansas. Le Cercle Francais, better known as the French Club, has forty-six members. Money was raised for numerous projects through the sale of baked goods. A tape recorder was purchased to help French II students in preparing for the National French Contest, and a French movie was rented. Outstanding club members with high scholastic achievement in French were rewarded. The Spanish Club is the largest language club with 124 members. Of several projects, the largest money- making venture was a semi-formal dance, “Fiesta Time,” given in March. The club’s float won first prize in the Homecoming parade. £ National Honor Society Left to Right, FIRST ROW: Cheryl Kuglich, George Jones, Boh Hild, Janice Rauworth, Wayne Kickels, Dan Bosse, Joyce Senffner, advisor. THE FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA, sponsored by Mrs. Janet Dutler, is dedicated to the concepts of building a better home life, improving the community, and strengthening democracy. This year’s theme was “Here’s Looking at You,” which was designed to help the girls to take a critical analysis of their homes, school, and community life. Programs consisting of a panel discussion, filmstrips, and speakers helped to carry out the theme. As money making projects, the organization sold dessert cookbooks and held a carwash and several bake sales. Also the girls sponsored a dance which was preceded by a talent show. To conclude the year of interesting events, the members with the required number of points, earned by atten- dance at meetings and working on committees, were rewarded with a night out which included dinner and a show. 79 Future Nurses of America Ixft to Right, FIRST ROW: Alice Overman, and Lucy Weller, advisors; C. The dual meet record was eight wins and four losses. In tournaments the boys also did very well. At the Wilmington tournament three boys placed second in their weight classes: George Thompson, Ed Eichelberger and Mike Mahoney. Fourth place was awarded to Ken Kiedai h The team finished in fifth place out of the nine teams entered. The first Fox Valley Wrestling Tournament was held at Plainfield High School and again the boys did very ,|| but were nosed out of first place 102-100 by the Oswego squad. The ’Cats had the only team which could linnet that all twelve of their boys won a medal. The first place winners in that tournament were George Thompson Ed Eichelberger, and Gary Tate. Second place winners were Mike Mahoney, Dave Clem, Gilbert Haire, Jerry Hamilton, Steve Thomson, and John Smith. Third place winners were Mike Sheridan, Roy Spangler, and Ken Kiedaisch. 1 he District Wrestling Iournament was held at Lockport where the Wildcats competed against Joliet Township Joliet Catholic, Lockport, and Minooka. Plainfield finished fourth. Dave Clem and Ken Kiedaisch placed second in the tourney in their weight classes. The Most Improved Wrestler trophy went to George Thompson. George’s name will also appear on the trophy at P H.S. for the quickest pin. He broke the old record of 28 seconds set by Mike Mahoney two years ago by- pinning one of his opponents in 24 seconds. Looking ahead to the 63- 64 season the ’Cats should have another good year because eleven of the twelve starters will be returning. Fresh-Soph Wrestlers £ { ? One of the most active organizations of the school is the Green and White Club, which consists of all varsity lettermen of each sport. This year it sponsored the annual trip to a hockey game and entered a float in the Homecoming parade. One of the biggest projects was supplying film for the camera which the club purchased to film basketball and football games. The money-raising projects were the Senior- faculty basketball game, the dance afterwards, and a dance during football season. The Green and White Club supplied the rope holders for every home basketball game, and assisted in financing the varsity cheerleaders’ trip to their clinic at Illinois State Normal University last summer. A newr constitution w'as adopted this year, and offices were reorganized—two changes which greatly improved the club.
