DEDICATION ' i Rosalie Demoney Dorothy Lambert In appreciation for their many hours of planning and working on the PLAINSMAN, not only this year, but in past years, we are proud to dedicate this issue to Rosalie De- money and Dorothy Lambert, the advisors to the PLAINS- MAN. 4 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS WALTER G. NIEHUS, B. Ed., AA.A. Illinois State Normal University University of Iowa University of Wyoming Supt. W. G. Niehus has completed twelve years in our school system. When he came he was faced with the problem of completing an unfinished grade school building. The problem of a terrific increase in enrollment has been with him constantly. However, he planned ahead and two more buildings were built and before the paint was dry, another addition to one of them. Now as this book goes to print, he is planning another large addition to accommodate the rapidly growing junior high. Besides his untiring efforts in the school building program, he has found time to guide and to help promote all other facets of the school system. A few out- standing examples might be the scholastic improvements, the successful rise in athletics, the expansion and achievements of the band and a continuance of a fine general attitude. The Plainsman editors and advisors, past and present, are indeed grateful — for it was Mr. Niehus who inaugurated the Plainsman, and much of its success is due to his efforts. We hope this, the twelfth volume of the Plainsman justifies his faith in us. 6 High School Principal STUART L. JOHNSON, B.A., M.S. The old white building was our house of learning for our adventurous first year, and there we were divided into two groups. There are so many things to ing, king and queen leaders of our recess line, phonics and reading played important parts in our daily development. In anticipation we entered the newly constructed grade school for our second year, and there we were divided into two groups. There are so many things to remember about our early school years. Can we forget the Laura Wilder books. White Saddle or The Boxcar Children? We cannot forget the cookies and the candy which were rewards for excellent spelling papers. Fifth grade brought the band into our lives, and with sixth grade came our re-division into three groups with change of teachers for each class. In seventh grade we returned again to the old white building for classes with the same spirit of closeness, fun, and parties that we had when we started first grade there. With eighth grade came promotion and the much dreaded constitution tests, and then, time pushed us off to high school! Very much humbled by the upperclassmen, we ninety-four freshmen learned that high school, indeed, was a different experience to be tried. We took on new responsibilities, gained knowledge and friends. We elected class officers: Carolyn Parks, president; Terrance Drauden, vice-president; Diana Stogsdill, secretary; and Paul Clarkson, treasurer. September of 1957 began our school year in the brand new high school. It was in this year that we began our mad search for money. Each dime from our cloakroom concession added until we were able to count the dollars. Officers for this year were Carolyn Parks, president; David Needham, vice-president; Donald Smiley, secretary; and Paul Clarkson, treasurer. Sharon Bronk was sopho- more attendant to the homecoming queen. As juniors we operated the refreshment concession to earn money for the prom. We worked selling candy and hot dogs and sponsored dances after basket- ball games. We were successful, too, for everyone enjoyed our banquet and prom, Winter Wonderland held May 15. Our guiding officers were Martha Sandberg, president; Garrett Johnson, vice-president; Russell Stenzel, secretary; and Brian Wood, treasurer. Lynda Lietzow was honored by being the junior class attendant at the homecoming dance. Class members who were interested in the thespian art produced the play, The Birds and the Boys. New organizations were formed in the school during our junior year, and we eagerly joined them. Another big event was the arrival of our class rings. On August 31, 1959, we began our senior year, sadly, for time has gone so quickly and we would have liked to linger in uncomplicated school days. Our class officers for this year were David Needham, president; Rodger Judy, vice- president; Sharon Bronk, secretary; and Brian Kasch, treasurer. Homecoming was the first event to rush upon us. How proud we were to crown our exquisite queen, Pamela Smith, with Martha Sandberg as her senior attendant. As future adult citizens we thought about our future, and the college bound worried their way through several scholarship tests. In anticipation we planned our senior trip to Washington, D.C. We sponsored a leap year dance in February to celebrate the extra day in 1960. We enjoyed, too, presenting our senior play, The People Versus Maxine Lowe. As spring came in earnest, we thought of the prom with curiosity. The theme remained a mystery to us until the big night of May 14. Graduation suddenly became a reality as we donned our caps and gowns. Of those sixty-four chil- dren who began first grade together in 1948, there were twenty-five still with us plus the other familiar faces who had joined us through the years. Our Future Homemakers of America Club, sponsored by Mrs. Phyllis Parrish, belongs to a nationwide organization. The theme for this year was Getting to Know Your Neighbors at Home and Abroad. Some of the money making-projects of the club consisted of: a mum sale at Homecoming, a car window wash, and a bakery sale. This money was used to buy equipment for the home economics room, to take a yearly trip to Chicago, and to carry out the club's activities. This year we entertained our fathers at Pa-Me Night and our mothers at the Mother's Tea. The F.H.A.-F.F.A. all-school party was another highlight of the year. In all, the Future Homemakers of America is a very busy club, taking part not only in local activities but Section, State and National as well. 56 FRONT ROW, left to right: Joy Wright, Carol Wilson, Martha Sandberg, Sharon Brook, Diane Brunner, lavonne Ferguson, Kathleen °™ “ SECOND ROW: Wendelle Mayfield, Lynn Munroe, Roberta Van Horn, Sharon Rinehart, Joy Rose, Kay Reed, Roxanne Lantz. JUNIOR VARSITY COACHES VARSITY COACHES 68 Kenneth Kurtz and David Toepke Thomas Baker and James Clark THE 1959-60 BASKETBALL SEASON The 1959-60 edition of Plainfield's Wildcats com- pleted one of the most successful seasons in the school's history. Percentage wise it was the most suc- cessful as they fought their way to twenty victories and only six setbacks for a winning .730 percentage. Highlighting the campaign was the capturing of their second straight Fox Valley Conference Championship. They did it with a perfect 10-0 record. They also re- tained the Fox, eighteen year old conference travel- ing trophy, which will remain in the Wildcat den until next year. Another outstanding achievement was the record breaking 109-91 victory over arch rivals Minooka. Plainfield's winning total is the highest in the Joliet area for any high school team since 1951, and very probably before that. The 200 point total for both teams also establishes a new area high for most points in one game. The Wildcats averaged an astonishing 69.7 points per game while totaling 1813 points to their opponents 1630 points. Heading the way was Plainfield's tal- ented center Dave Needham who netted 676 points for the year and a 26 point average. In the three years that Dave has competed in varsity competition he has compiled the amazing total of 1,757 points for a 22.5 average. Dave was chosen on the all-area first team for the third straight year. His teammates again voted him most valuable player. Terry Drauden was chosen as honorary captain for the 1959-60 season. Other parting seniors completed the balanced scoring as Bruce Gruben scored 237 points, Coady Erickson 223 points, Terry Drauden 208 points, Jim Alstott 168 points and Brian Kasch 146 points. The efforts of the entire team, however, played the most important part in this fine year. Everyone worked very hard and had a strong desire to succeed. And succeed they did! Plainfield's Frosh-Soph. team finished in a second place tie in conference play. Their over all record in- cluded 13 victories and 9 defeats. 69 Left to right, KNEELING: Kenneth Keister, manager; William Toiler, coach. THE COACH RECALLS THE 1959-60 SEASON With another year coming to a close, we look back on the basketball season with mixed emotions. The record compiled by the team was a successful one of twelve wins and five losses. However, the stories behind the record are what make the game of basketball so appealing to the millions of people who follow it. There were many exciting times during the season; an untimely birthday cele- bration with tears of joy and sadness, winning close ball games and losing close ball games. We were favored to win, but we lost. Predictors said we wouldn't, but we won. Throughout the season, we enjoyed the competitiveness and sports- manship of the game. In September, the boys will be in high school. There they will find new experiences and will do their very best to make the school proud of them both in the classroom and in athletics. Individual honors were bestowed upon some of the players during the year. Randy Dewar and LeRoy Brody were chosen on the all-tournament team at Chaney and each received an individual trophy. Two new trophies, a second place and a third place trophy were placed in the trophy case for the '59-'60 season. The members of the squad elected LeRoy Brody as the most valuable player to the team, and his name will be inscribed on the Most Valuable Player Trophy. We believe LeRoy established a new record in grade school basketball — making thirty-eight points in one game. Randy Dewar was elected Honorary Captain. 88 BASKETBALL Varsity Team STANDING, left to right: Kenneth Kiedaisch, Robert D. This year the Plainfield School Safety Patrol is represented by the largest group of boys in our school's long history. Six patrols are in operation each day, rain or shine — cold or hot, protecting the children of our area going to and coming from school. We are proud recipients of the Chicago Motor Club Certificate of Award. This award certifies that the School Safety Patrol, in co-operation with students and teachers, has completed another perfect year of service — not a single child has been injured or killed at a crossing protected by the Safety Patrol. We are proud of the fine job our boys are doing on patrol. Keep up the good work! 129 Homecoming Time, October 2 and 3. And I being no different in any way Must admit that I have had my day. Eighty years ago, more or less. My exact birthday unknown, I must confess. I first appeared on this prairie land Young and proud and looking grand. Pride of Plainfield, midst the maple trees I served as home to the scholars, also the bees. As time went on I became too small To shelter those answering my huge bell's call. Relief came from the new high school standing near — I am sure nineteen sixteen was the year. For the elementary pupils I managed fine Until the year of nineteen twenty-nine. Then again to relieve my growing pains Came the brown bungalow, also known by other names. For twenty years more I filled the need Of those entering my doors to learn to read. Time Marches On and September of forty-nine Finds me yielding to Central, new and fine. But complete retirement was not yet for me And I was recalled to duty in fifty-three. Five more years, then came the end — My age would not allow my aches to mend. Time Marches On, this I know. Goodbye to all those who knew me — I must go. THE OLD TRAVELER TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY -T ►•«) i W ' Am
