c 5 upermten dent o S c 100 s Walter G. Niehus, B.Ed., M.A., Illinois State Normal University, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming. From the Desk of the Superintendent The trip from kindergarten to the senior year of high school may be compared, it seems to me, with Jules Verne's famous trip around the world. Traveling 'from one year to the next, from childhood through adolescence, from the simple experiences of the lower grades to the complexities of high school—this surely is one of life's most important journeys. It is our hope that this journey will be one of pleasure and profit, an experience to enjoy, and one that will prepare you to take your place as a competent traveler through the journey of life. Whether you enjoy and profit from your school journey will depend upon the attitudes you have and the observations you make. Is it not true that after identical journeys, travelers return to report pleasures, experiences, and observations that vary to an almost unbelievable degree? Some will speak with enthusiasm about the museums and other beautiful and educa- tional places of interest, while others visiting the same places will speak only of congested traffic and other obstacles they encountered. Is it not amazing that travelers returning from our great national parks will talk only of the beauty of the snow and the magnificent pine trees that rest on the majestic mountain peak, while others remember only the pile of barren rock and the rough trail at the foot of the mountain ? There are those who will describe the blossom of the desert .actus as a thing of rare and enchanting beauty, while others will speak only of the lizard that lies sleeping in the shade of this beautiful flower. Some return to tell of the friendliness and hospitality of people they have met in their travels; others speak only of the noisy folks in the adjoining motel room or complain of the time they lost when a policeman stopped them for exceeding the speed limit. It is our sincere hope that you will travel through the Plainfield schools with an attitude that will cause you to observe the beauty, the satisfaction and the advantages that come to those who search for knowledge through good books, the laboratory, or the many extracurricular activities that are available along your pathway. We hope that you will look upon your teachers as helpful guides whose privilege and duty it is to be of assistance to you on your educational journey. To those of you who have completed the journey here—our best wishes go with you; to those of you who are just beginning or have gone only part of the way, we say, Travel well.” 6
