We editors invite you to travel with us around Plainfield Schools in 185 days. 7J c a ns nan Published by PLAINFIELD CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS Plainfield, Illinois 1959 EDITORS Carole Kenyon Janice Leffers JUNIOR EDITORS Carolyn Parks Brian Wood ADVISORS Dorothy Lambert Rosalie Schaper Volume XI High School FLIGHT STOPS Personalities Activities Athletics Grade School S7n JKemoriam RICHARD W. HADFIELD Class of '62 August 24, 1944—November 26, 1958 Peacefully as a snowfall, Death covers a life. Draping it in its quiet, calm pall. A soul wafted far from a world of dark strife, Answering the faint, final call. A pebble washed from a sandy shore. Carried out with the running tide. Back to the foam-crested sea once more, To forever there abide. Softy rising smoke dispersed by the breeze, That drifts through the trees in the fall. A youthful spirit at last put at ease, Finding eternal peace after all. —JOHN JEWETT JR Class of '61 4 c 5 upermten dent o S c 100 s Walter G. Niehus, B.Ed., M.A., Illinois State Normal University, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming. From the Desk of the Superintendent The trip from kindergarten to the senior year of high school may be compared, it seems to me, with Jules Verne's famous trip around the world. Traveling 'from one year to the next, from childhood through adolescence, from the simple experiences of the lower grades to the complexities of high school—this surely is one of life's most important journeys. It is our hope that this journey will be one of pleasure and profit, an experience to enjoy, and one that will prepare you to take your place as a competent traveler through the journey of life. Whether you enjoy and profit from your school journey will depend upon the attitudes you have and the observations you make. Is it not true that after identical journeys, travelers return to report pleasures, experiences, and observations that vary to an almost unbelievable degree? Some will speak with enthusiasm about the museums and other beautiful and educa- tional places of interest, while others visiting the same places will speak only of congested traffic and other obstacles they encountered. Is it not amazing that travelers returning from our great national parks will talk only of the beauty of the snow and the magnificent pine trees that rest on the majestic mountain peak, while others remember only the pile of barren rock and the rough trail at the foot of the mountain ? There are those who will describe the blossom of the desert .actus as a thing of rare and enchanting beauty, while others will speak only of the lizard that lies sleeping in the shade of this beautiful flower. Some return to tell of the friendliness and hospitality of people they have met in their travels; others speak only of the noisy folks in the adjoining motel room or complain of the time they lost when a policeman stopped them for exceeding the speed limit. It is our sincere hope that you will travel through the Plainfield schools with an attitude that will cause you to observe the beauty, the satisfaction and the advantages that come to those who search for knowledge through good books, the laboratory, or the many extracurricular activities that are available along your pathway. We hope that you will look upon your teachers as helpful guides whose privilege and duty it is to be of assistance to you on your educational journey. To those of you who have completed the journey here—our best wishes go with you; to those of you who are just beginning or have gone only part of the way, we say, Travel well.” 6 7Ji nncipais s Elementary Principal ALFRED C. JOHN BERST 25 On a warm summer day in 1947, we, the seniors of 1959, began our tour of the Plain- field Schools. Although our trip took twelve years rather than 185 days, we still enjoyed every minute of it. When we began our trip there were fifty-two eager passengers. Of the fifty-two, thirty of the original group finished the journey together. Of course, there were additions and losses to the passenger list all along the way. Our first stop for this tour of learning was the first grade for our initial taste of the three r's, necessary on the menu of a twelve year school tour. We moved on to the second grade and a new environment, the basement of the Public Library. The third grade saw us on the move again to a new atmosphere in the just completed brick grade school. This proved so interesting that we spent the next three years there, with short excursions in the summer, studying language, literature, geography, art, and other fine points of learning. A number of us who were musically minded joined the band. Our class was on the move again this time to the white building and junior high school, where we anticipated moving from room to room for classes as our idolized high school brothers and sisters did. Our guides these next few years were skillfully preparing us for our big trip into high school. Seventy smiling graduates boarded the plane that third day of June 1955, wondering where the flight would take them. Because we were eager to land and become high school ladies and gentlemen, we felt that summer vacation would never end. September finally came, however, and we landed eager, but somewhat scared, to join the sophisticated people already there. After a week of fragrantly scented boys and colorless girls, except for out-of-place smears of lipstick, we settled down to work, for we realized that we could not avoid studying—hard as we tried. Since this was a major stop we elected officers to help guide us through the days. James Nelson was president; Susan Sage, vice-president; and Kay Townill, secretary- treasurer. We learned that our permanent tour guides for the next four years would be Mrs. Leaman and Mr. Groh, our class advisors. Homecoming was the first big event for us freshies because Susan Sage was a nominee for Queen, and our float The Murder of Yorkville” took first place. Soon we were sophomores and our funds from this extended tour were running low, so we began to make money by operating the check room at all school activities. We elected new officer guides. John Berst was president; Ann George, vice-president; Susan Sage, secretary; and Ada George, treasurer. After thinking we were settled, we packed our trunks once more and moved for our junior and busiest year to a brand new high school. Studying somehow seemed easier in the new, modern rooms. Our only objection was the rusty taste of the water, but this was soon eliminated. We managed the concession stand at football and basketball games, and our treasury began to grow by leaps and bounds. Class guides were: Patricia Warner, president; Doris Fleming, vice-president; Audrey Paluck, secretary; and Robert Milligan, treasurer. The dramatic minded in our class starred in our play The Family Nobody Wanted. Finally, the biggest event of the year, our farewell to our friends the seniors came. Softly tinkling wind chimes and a beautiful oriental garden complete with fish pond and green grass added atmosphere to our prom Sayonara.” With this milestone past we anxiously awaited the arrival of our class rings. After a brief, but well-earned summer rest, we returned as seniors to spend our last 185 days of the tour in the halls of P. H. S. At once we launched into Homecoming and crowned our lovely queen, Ann George, with Audrey Paluck as her senior attendant. Our last guides were elected: Earl Petersen, president; Florian Chwasz, vice-president; James Sebby, secretary; Thomas Findlay, treasurer. Under the direction of our officers and advisors, we planned our senior trip to Washington, D. C. Everybody sighed with relief when the play cast was posted, and after many work and fun-filled evenings at rehearsal, Dino was presented. Many attended and were amazed by the composite stage which this play required. As the year came to a close the farewell prom in our honor became the most discussed event. With greater knowledge and many fond memories we waved good-by to Plainfield Schools as we embarked on our journey into life. If you do not think about the future, you cannot have one. —JOHN GALSWORTHY 26 Left to right: Garrett Johnson, vice-president; Martha Sandberg, president; Brian Wood, treasurer; Mr. Mart Mitchell, Mr. John Scott, Mrs. Pauline Culbertson. adiisors Russell Stenzel, secretary. 27 7he junior Gfa ass James Alstott Carl Anderson Mary Balstrode Donald Beahm Betty Beebe Mary Berard Kathleen Bombasaro Judith Brewer Sharon Bronk Diane Brunner John Bunting Richard Butterbach Paul Clarkson James Colwell Larry Covili David Crawford James D’Amico James Davis Dean Dixon Terrance Drauden Robert Durant George Eaton Coady Erickson John Felix Lavonne Ferguson Richard Fisher David Fleming Laurie Glasgow Bruce Gruben Richard Gruben fie junior C j as s Janet Harms Karen Harms Carol Sue Hedtcke Judith Hill Arthur Hiller Kathleen Hogan Fred Hoyt Edgar Jennings Rodger O. The Future Farmers of America, or the F. F. A. as it is commonly known, is the national organization of, by and for the boys studying vocational agriculture. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, co- operation and citizenship. This year the chapter of twenty-four members was organized in September. Richard Hadfield was a member of this chapter, and after his untimely death his pals missed him greatly. The large project of the year was operating the F. F. A. farm at the Continental Can Company. All of the boys participated in the various phases of the work and are looking forward to a bountiful harvest. Early in the year Greenhands were initiated into the organization. Members attended the Chicago Market Show, State Judging Contests, State F. F. A. Convention, Sectional Activities, and helped sponsor the Spring Frolic. The most valuable football and basketball player scrapbooks were made by the cheerleaders. The girls' part in the Home- coming activities was planning the pep session and bonfire at the Village Green. The football team, aided by the cheerleaders, sponsored a Dad’s Day Game. Even though the Wildcats lost six and won two, the season was not as bleak as the record might indicate. The Wildcats dropped their first game with Wilmington 20-0. Each touchdown was not given away quickly and easily. Near the end Florian Chwasz's passing arm was threatening Wilmington, as he began to throw completed passes to ends and halfbacks. Plainfield dropped the next game 13-0 to Earlville. The Wildcats played a £ood defensive game. In the following week the varsity played host to powerful Yorkville at Yorkville's Homecoming. The score was only 12-0 at the half, but Plainfield fell near the end, 40-0. The big green next entertained a powerful Dwight eleven by losing 38-12. Though it was too late, the Wildcats pushed Dwight around in the second half. At Plainfield's Homecoming, Marseilles handed the Wildcats a stubborn defeat of 18-0. It was unfortunate for the Cats” as Marseilles earned their points only on mistakes like pass interceptions. The fighting Wildcat eleven finally tasted victory by pushing over hopeful Plano 20-0. The next game was at the hands of Oswego, 45-7. It was a rugged game and Plainfield was able to play on even terms, but the Panther's speedy halfbacks were much too fast for the Wildcats. The Wildcats knocked over last year’s conference champs, Sandwich, 20-0, in their last game. Chuck Wood showed his great competitive spirit as he repeatedly smashed through the Sandwich line for long gains. All conference honors were given to Chuck Wood. Jim Alstott was named first team center and second team tackle. Florian Chwasz and John Berst received honorable mention. Florian Chwasz and Jim Alstott were Chicago Daily News' pick on the Little All-State second team. Chuck Wood, for the second year, won the most valuable player award and the most tackles award. The Plainfield Varsity will suffer a great loss with the graduation of such players as Chuck Wood, rugged linebacker; Tom Findlay, tough end; Florian Chwasz, tough little field general; and Bill Goben, good kicker and passer. 64 65 t Junior TJarsity 001bci 0earn FRONT ROW, left to right: Douglas Smith, manager; Frank Patzka, Roger Therrien, William Drauden, Terry Russell, Timothy Adams. Roger Dewar, James Hill, Mark Wallin, Edward Rinehart, John Jewett. Otto Sebby, Paul Crafts, coach. Wilmington downed Plainfield 27-7 in their first game. Bill Drauden scored the Wildcats' only touchdown. However, in their second game, they trounced E rlville 21-0. Frank Patzka, Bill Drauden, and Tim Adams all made touchdowns. In the game with Yorkville, the frosh-soph fell in the final seconds 12-7. John Jewett made the only touchdown. Dwight rolled over the Wildcats 20-0 in the following game. At Marseilles Plainfield again met defeat 33-7. The touchdown was made by Bill Drauden. Although the frosh-soph won statistically by a forfeit, they lost to Plano who had several varsity players on their squad. Running into a brick wall, the cats lost at Oswego’s homecoming 56-0. Finally, at Sand- wich, the Wildcats came back with an impressive 16-0 win with Frank Patzka and Mark Wallin making the two touchdowns. 66 7fie 1958-59 7 as£e(6af S eason The 1958-59 basketball season for Plainfield's varsity squad was a highly successful one. The Wildcats fought their way to 19 victories and tumbled only 8 times. High- lighting their campaign was the capturing of the Fox Valley Conference Championship with a 9-1 record. They also recovered the Fox, conference traveling trophy, which will remain in the Wildcat den until next year. Other achievements include a second place trophy in the conference tournament which was held here in Plainfield and runner-up honors in the state district tournament. Individual honors went to David Needham who was chosen on the all-area first team and also was named most valuable player by his teammates. Florian Chwasz was chosen as honorary captain for the 1958-59 season. Top scorers for the year included: David Needham 587 points, Wayne Schieber 335 points, Florian Chwasz 250 points, and Jim Sebby 236 points. The efforts of the entire team, however, played the most important part in this fine year. Everyone worked hard and had a strong determination to succeed. And succeed they did. Plainfield's underclassmen finished in a three way tie for the conference JV title with Lisle and Yorkville. Their over all record included 11 victories and 10 defeats. A FOND FAREWELL TO THE 1958-59 SEASON As we look back on the 1958-59 basketball season, we shall probably say to ourselves. It could have been; it might have been; it should have been—and so on.” However, the primary purpose of our junior high school basketball program is to train boys for the high school teams. If we have done this, our year was a success. This season we feel that our team consisted of boys with outstanding character, excellent leadership and keen love of competition. There were no individual stars. Each boy did his part in order to reach the common goal—victory. What is more important than learning to work together? Our way of life depends on it. After a great deal of deliberation, the members of the squad elected David Harshbarger as the most valuable player to the team, and his name will be inscribed on the Most Valuable Player trophy. Dale Mayfield was elected Honorary Captain. 81 fias zetbal hiahtweight 7eam STANDING, left to right: Neil Warner. Since the first edition of the Plainsman in 1949, our Plainfield Safety Patrol has more than tripled in number. In lp49, we had ten members in our patrol with Mr. Gerald Reynolds as the leader, and today we have thirty-five members under the supervision of Mr. Alfred Kranz. We had a successful year and were proud to receive the Chicago Motor Club’s Award for Meritorious Service this past year. For our time and tireless efforts, we received passes to local school athletic games and a trip to a major league baseball game through the courtesy of the P. T. A. We, of the Plainfield Safety Patrol, wish to thank students, teachers, parents, members of the Parent Teachers Association, police and townspeople for your fine co-operation in helping us to make our area, a safer place to attend school. 86 Virginia Bradley James Brewer David Brown Carl Chapman David Curtis Leanne Johnson Nancy Jones Suzanne Kase Janet Kubinski Marilyn Leahigh Donald Lowtwait Sharon Mauer Ross Mayfield Darryl Miersch Laura Kay Miller Patricia Mulyck Jalayne Neef Walter Obman James Ozbolt Roberta Raddatz Barbara Rauworth John Rutherford Jack Santerelli Judith Schrader Diane Scott Gregory Selfridge Diane Simmen Gary Summers Patricia Urbanski T eacher Mrs. Elsie Anderson Nvt pictured Frederick Fiene Lynn Ann Bosse Olen Ray Colclasure William Denato Linda Downing Gary Failing John Frangella William Ham John Kaatz Betty Keck Linda Kluck Robert Kyle Olive Levers Dennis Limbaugh Sharon Kay Lyons Beverly McCall David Mueller Roxanne Munch Suzanne Pumphrey David Russell Kathryn Sedlacek Melvin Smith James Spires Rhonda Spires Carolyn Tackett Patricia Thornton Paul Warmbier Jimmy White Nancy Wietting Larry Wilson T eacher Mrs. Margaret Parks Not pictured Diane Hartshorne Aixifi Jracfe Jeanne Annis Suzanne Bartz Sandra Bender Janet Beverly Andrea Brockway Susan Capps William Dew Russell Engstrom Patricia Frazier Orma Fry Robert Gillis Michael Hanson Randall Heinz James Jennings Eva Lillibridge Virginia Linder Myrna Lopez Donna Overman Richard Myers Linda Perella Patricia Peterson Sandra Scent Lester Schiek Bruce Shiffer Barbara Sievert John Smith Ronald Smith Deborah Stonich Jean Taylor George Thompson Carol Thomson David Tunpll Frank Zbacnik David Zupancic Sot pictured Gwendolyn Gray Teachers Mrs. Faye Bunting Mrs. Helen Klett William Clark John Clegg John Cofer Donald Dixon Linda Eichelberger Thomas Eungard Rebecca Felix Gary Ferguson Charles Flagg David Fletcher Cynthia Hrechko Larry Jack Diana Krueger Vernon Kujath Gayle Lowery Mary Ann Nelson Merry An Piner Burton Saxon Karen Schroeder Jo Anne Sebby Lawrence Senders Harriett Mae Shull Dan Smith Richard Waller Ann Wallin Geraldine Wheeler Carol Wood Robert Zimmer T eacher Mrs. N. But if Fate should mark me to sit at your side, Let’s be pleasant travelers—it’s so short a ride. TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY
