Standing: Wayne Stevenson, coach Harvey Johnson, Luzern Richter, Douglas Thompson, Douglas Davis, Leslie Tauchen, manager; Paul Crafts, coach. Eight years ago under Mr. Niehus’ guidance these boys began their basket- ball careers. At this time the course was set, and in the spring of 1953, in grade school under the coaching of Mr. Brennan, they were the first team to ever become one of the Sweet Sixteen” of the state. In high school, Coach Stevenson carried on with their plans and today we have the first team to win the State District. We are proud of you—you certainly followed your dream. In recog- nition, it seems very fitting that this issue of dreams be dedicated to you. Superintendent o ScAooA WALTER G. NIEHUS, B.Ed., M.A.; Illinois State Normal University, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming. We take great pleasure in extending to you our sincere congratulations upon the completion of a new high school. For the second time in nine years it has been your duty to supervise the construction and the equipping of new buildings for Plainfield schools. We know the tasks were not easy. There were many hours of planning, and great demands made on your strength and personal life but, now, too, your dream is being fulfilled. It is a day of great importance and marks another milestone in the educational development of Plainfield. It offers the girls and boys of our community greater opportunities and advantages. Surely, it is with satisfaction and pride that you look upon this accomplishment. Our wish for you is success in all future dreams. JJnncipafs High School Principal GERALD H. REYNOLDS, B E., M S. Many thanks to these men who have spent countless hours planning, working, and fulfilling their dreams for a new high school, and who have provided the best possible facilities for the students and teachers while completing this proj- ect. With the leadership of men like these, and the help of other local citizens, the generation of today will be better prepared to participate in the schools, churches, and government of tomorrow. Each of these days is gone forever; nary a one can ever return. We cannot undo any of the history we have made during our four wonderful years of P.H.S. As a house is not a home unless the family in it makes it such, so it is with a school. We have contributed in a small way in making this a school of one great, big, happy family, not just a square brick building. Our school in this small, country town is made up of not only readin', writin' and 'rithmetic, but also sports, extracurricular activities, and friends. September, 1953, was a month we’ll never forget. I'm sure. We, numbering fifty- three, started our freshman year off with a big bang! Limburger cheese, rotten tomatoes, bright, red lipstick, and cheap perfume were some of the items necessary to initiate us. What did we ever do to deserve that? After a day of wearing peculiar clothing, bowing to upperclassmen, and toting other students' books to classes, and an evening called a senior welcome, we were full-fledged students of P.H.S. That year we joined all kinds of clubs. Donna Evans represented our class as a cheerleader, while Harvey Johnson was a member of the football varsity squad. Class officers elected were: Richard Day, President; Paul Montgomery, Vice President; and Judith Wright, Secretary-Treasurer. We certainly did more partying and less studying that year than an other, as our records now indicate. Nevertheless, our Freshman year is the one that will probably be remembered the longest of any other. It seemed like no time until we were Sophomores. The time certainly began to fly, now. Class officers elected were: Fred Hadfield, President; Joyce McBride, Vice Presi- dent; Anne Palmer, Secretary; and Chic Clarkson, Treasurer. Our Fresh-Soph basket- ball team was the conference champion that year. Check your hat and coat with us,” was the familiar cry of us Sophomores in the cloak room where for only a dime you could safely check your things for any sort of activity being carried on in the gym, from wrestling matches to formal dances. We Sophomores, with a little bit of Ireland in us, sponsored an all-school party in honor of St. Patrick’s day, March 17. Because we had enjoyed reading Julius Caesar in English, a Roman banquet was put on by part of our group. Even girls decorated in Roman costumes added to the atmosphere. On to our busy, busy Junior year— Money, money, money, was our cry—and did we work for it! Concessions at football and basketball games, and other school activities helped increase our treasury. Our work paid off in the end, however, when on the romantic night of May 18 dreamy-eyed Juniors and Seniors attended our Prom entitled, Symphony of a Starry Night. The gym was beautifully decorated in midnight blue and silver, with glittering stars hanging from our crepe-paper sky. A memorable night for us and the honored graduating class. Also during our busy Junior year, we gave a very successful play called, Maudie and the Opposite Sex.” Our very dependable and very much needed class officers in this, our busiest year, were: Chic Clarkson, President; Janet Zimmerman, Vice President; Carol Balstrode, Treasurer; and Wilbur Leffers, Secretary. Now on to our last year in the halls of P.H.S. Thinking back over our Senior year is sure to give us all a nostalgic feeling. Our class officers this year were: Edward Niehus, President; Myron Rieser, Vice President; Daryl Smiley, Secretary'; Pinky Richter, Treasurer. Love Thy Neighbor, our Senior class play, received very good reviews from the local townspeople. This riotous comedy really had the audience in stitches! Our Fightin' Wildcat football team won the Fox Valley Championship, as did our basketball team. In fact, our Seniors made very cognizant history by winning the district tournament of the Illinois State High School Association early in the spring. Love affairs, old dance programs, dried-up corsages, late hours, campaign buttons, history notes, hoarse throats, slumber parties, tears, laughter, blue Mondays—all these are a part of our four memorable years of P.H.S. Each of these, in addition to our aca- demic subjects, has contributed to our growing up. The road to tomorrow leads through yesterday. Recipients of American Region and Z). A. rR. Our junior year will be remembered in many of our fondest dreams as the busiest year in high school. Selling at the concession stand during the football and basketball games occupied many of our nights. Days didn't have enough hours in them because we were selling tickets and pencils, and planning for a dance after a basketball game. The pres- entation of Inner Willy in the spring kept the entire class jumping. We will not remember too clearly the hours we spent planning, preparing and anxiously awaiting the banquet and prom—just the thrill and excitement of that Big Night. Everyone was excited and a few were lost, but after the first week we felt at home. The class officers and our student council representatives, Sharon Bronk and Pamela Smith, were elected at our first class meeting. Jyme Verick was an alternate cheerleader. We spent many hour of work on our float, The Human Cannonball, for the Home- coming parade. We now are looking forward to entering the NEW high school as sophomores. f)e Tres iman C ) ass James Alstott Carl Anderson Mary Balstrode Donald Beahm Betty Beebe Duane Bill Kathleen Bombasaro Judith Brewer Douglas Brian Sharon Bronk Judith Brookman Diane Brunner Richard Butterbach James Colwell Larry Covili David Crawford James D'Amico Jacqueline Davis James Davis Dean Dixon Barbara Douglas George Eaton Coady Erickson John Felix Lavonne Ferguson Richard Fisher David Fleming Laurie Glasgow Evelyn Gregorich Bruce Gruben 1 ie Jresfnnan C ass Richard Gruben Janet Harms Karen Harms Carol Sue Hedtckc Judith Hill Arthur Hiller Kathleen Hogan Fred Hoyt Edgar Jennings Noel Jensen Garret Johnson Rodger O. The Vashki living room was buzzing with the preparations for Tessy Vashki’s marriage to Ozzy Fredricks, a Chicago society wheel; pesky twins; a tuba-playing kid brother; and bees, which belonged to a neighbor, Johnny Jones. Johnny’s bees swarmed down the chimney, and one stung Tessy on the nose. When Tessy called Johnny for an apology,, they hit it off famously until he learned that Tessy was engaged. The plot thickened; and the wedding w'as further complicated when Ozzy’s aunt tried putting Johnny out of business. Through the ’Fielder, the activities and fun of our high school days have been recorded to use not only as a fine source of information and news now, but also to bring back our favorite memories in the years to come. For the first time, a breakfast was held during Homecoming at the Esquire Restaurant for the present and past Fielder Staffs. It has been decided to make this a biennial affair. The efforts of advisor Miss Betty Patterson, Sandra Brian, Elizabeth Stafford, and the entire staff have been well rewarded, for once again the Fielder has been a success. The Future Farmers of America is a group of boys interested in the study of vocational agriculture. This chapter of twenty-six members participated in many activities. The chapter sent delegates to both the State and National Conventions. Richard Day, Lawrence See and Kenneth Munroc attended the State Convention held at State Fair Grounds, Springfield, Illinois; Kenneth Munroe, Paul Montgomery and Fred Hadficld attended the 32nd National Convention at Kansas City, Missouri. Forrest George, the flying farmer, flew and chaperoned the three boys to the National Convention. Representatives of the chapter exhibited at the State and Section Fairs and the Chicago Fall and Spring Market Hog Shows. In the latter shows the boys won more placings than any other chapter in Illinois. Paul Montgomery and James Chaplin won first places at Springfield. These two boys entered hogs in the State Chester White Show and Sale. Other activities were state land, grain, poultry, dairy and fat stock judging contests; pest contest, father and son banquet, donkey ball game, and two chicken dinners served by the F.H.A. Chapter. A Slave Auction was held and the chapter netted S304 for their work. 7. 7. 71. Jioys in Icl ion Mr. Wizard or . . . Mad Scientist Ken's slick chick! The 1956 football season was highlighted by several things—among them an im- pressive 5-1-2 win, lose, and tie record: the only setback was to Earlville, who shared the conference championship. The ties were with Yorkville and Sandwich, both of whom ended their season lower in the conference standing. The Wildcats’ 5-1-2 record was good enough to give them the second best record in the Joliet area. Richard Day was selected most valuable player” by the rest of his teammates in addition to being chosen as a tackle on the all-conference first team. Gerald Leaman, awarded the trophy for making the most tackles this season in P.H.S., was chosen as guard on the all-conference first team and on the second team of the all-northern Illinois team. Roger Bronk and Harvey Johnson w'ere chosen for the second team of the all- conference team. Paul Montgomery was chosen first string halfback on the all-northern area team. Behind a line of James Mauer, end; Richard Day, tackle; Gerald Leaman, guard; Roger Bronk, center; Eugene Boese, guard; Alvin Rieser, tackle; and Lawrence Houle, end; were the hard running backs Fred Hadfield, quarterback; Harvey Johnson, half- back; Paul Montgomery, halfback; and Bruce Fleming, fullback. It was their action plus the help of Richard Russell, backfield; and William Alstott, line; which made the season very successful. THE 1957 BASKETBALL SEASON With hundreds of loyal Plainfield fans supporting them, in defeats and in victory, the Plainfield teams compiled the following records: For the third time in four years the varsity Wildcats won the Fox Valley Conference Cham- pionship; for the second year in a row the Wildcats won the Fox Valley Con- ference Tournament in the varsity division and gained the distinction of being the frst conference school to wn both divisions the same year. The highlight of the season was the Plainfield victory in the Illinois High School Association District Tourney at Oswego. In the first game of the state tournament, the boys de- feated Plano 66-51 and then in a spinetingling finish, with only two minutes left and six points behind, they beat Osw'ego in the semi-finals 61-57. In the finals the Wildcats came from behind again to win the Championship trophy over a tough Elburn team 67-58. The Wildcats moved up to play at Batavia in the Regional Tournament and lost a hard fought battle to Marmion M.A. (Aurora) to end the season. Our Wildcats enjoyed their winningest” season in the school’s history as it won 21 games and lost nine. Larry Burk was elected Honorary Team Captain. Fred Hadfield and Larry Burk were chosen most valuable players by members of their team. Larry Burk won the annual free throw award, making 152 free throws out of 202 attempts for a percentage of 75.2 per cent. The fresh-soph” team, besides winning the Fox Valley Conference Tourna- ment Championship trophy, placed second in the Fox Valley Conference with a record of six wins and two losses and finished the season with 15 wins and eight losses. The Plainfield Little Wildcats” have completed another year on the hard- woods and have added new trophies to be admired in the entryway trophy case. The season record in wins and losses leaves something to be desired, but the boys have scored several victories, not only over some other good area ball clubs, but personal victories in learning to enjoy the fellowship of belonging to a team and working together in order to prepare themselves for the game of life. The tournament trophies added to the filling trophy case were won at the Chaney tournament in Joliet, where the Lightweights and the Heavyweights each won the third place prize. In winning these trophies, Terry Russell of the Lightweights and Charles Stansberry of the Varsity team won additional honors for PGS by being selected members of the All-Tournament Team. The team members elected James Hill as the player who contributed the most to the success of the team and his name will be engraved on the Most Valuable Player Trophy. Charles Stansberry was elected by his team as honorary captain of the Grade School squad of 1956-1957.
