Milestone 1986 Plainfield High School 950 Park Avenue Plainfield, New Jersey Volume 55 SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF '86 Dear Members of the Class of '86: It is an honor to have this chance to speak directly with you. You are about to embark on an unparalleled mission - a series of challenges that you have never imagined and a life of opportunities and experiences far richer than any generation before. You have survived a great time of change in the world, in Plainfield and its schools. This world is open to you, as no generation before. How will you respond to these challenges? I would hope that your response is confidence - in yourself and in the education you have received in your schools, as well as the nurturing of family and friends. All that we in the schools can hope to achieve for you is preparation and a love for excellence - preparation for higher education, at an institute, trade school, college or university; preparation for a job that will reward, not only monetarily, but lead you to lifelong satisfaction and fulfillment; preparation for the expectations of society, to be a productive citizen, and an asset to your community; preparation for the herculean responsibility of beginning and nurturing a family; and, finally, preparation for leadership and success in today's and tomorrow's world. Self-confidence, and the wisdom that comes from knowledge and experience will carry you through the times ahead. If the Plainfield Public Schools have planted the seeds that will provide you these things in the years to come, surely we have succeeded. We are your family, and you need to know you will always be welcome to return to visit us, again, to share in your triumphs and to ask our advice when times are trying. Your teachers, principals and every single member of the Plainfield school staff are concerned for you, welcome the opportunity to continue serving you, and to provide the support it will take to excel in the years ahead. I am proud of you and wish all the very best for you in your every endeavor. The faith and pride of the entire Plainfield School System and its Board of Education go with you in everything you do. Thank you for being a great credit to that faith and pride. Sincerely, Oliver W. Experience had shown that once a student has learned to master difficulty of not familiar, they learn to enjoy and appreciate all types of music. This year marked the first year for Advanced Chorus. In December they were given the opportunity to perform in conjunction with the Newark Boys’ Chorus and also at the Superintendent's Annual Reception. A selected group from the Chorus participated in the All-City Chorus and later in the Union County Festival. Senior Virginia Amato, soprano, was one of 400 students selected out of app. 2,000 who auditioned for the NJ All-State Chorus. We wish Virginia much success as she joins the growing number of students embarking upon a music career. Sophomores David Anderson and Kim Bond were featured in many of the choral selections in the spiritual and popular mode. We are looking forward to hearing much more from this select group of young people. Playing a Watchung Conference schedule with only 25 players is like playing Russian Roulette. Co-Captains Mike Riddick and Jerald Lee both missed games because of injuries. Senior stalwarts Billy Guy, Derrick Caldwell, and Nip Anderson also were handicapped by injury problems. Gutsy performances by Howard Dashiell, Keith Bilal, Charles English, Tommy Anderson, Franklin Spaulding and newcomer Bryon Franklin gained the respect of our opponents and made every contest a close one. It has been said that adversity is the real measure of the character of a man. Those young men faced adversity in the eye from September Ist and stood tall throughout the storm.
