INSTITUTE FOR POLITICAL AND LEGAL EDUCATION LAW AND POLITICAL ACTION CLASSES Plainfield High School's Law and Political Action classes, in their (3rd) third year of existence is the onl academic course in the school which Be fers students “hands on” or experience based instruction in Law and Political Ac- tion. Students participate in many overnment and school community nctions, in addition to their classroom instruction. Through Voter Registration drives the students have registered over 500 eligi- ble Plainfield High School students, staff, and community residents since the program’s inception. They assist the League of Women Voters, NAACP and sponsor their own Plainfield High School Voter Registration Drive. They volunteer to work in Democratic and Republican local headquarters to gain lst hand experience on how grassroots politics works. Leadership skills are developed and Law Political Action students are en- couraged to apply their political knowledge by running for school offices. To date more than (7) seven students served as student council officers class officers. Two of these interns were selec- ted to attend the Congressional Seminar and represent their school in Washington D.C. Several of these stu- dents have won school and community awards such as the Prestigions Prin- cipal's Award, Ronald H. Lewis Scholarship Award, Frontiersmen Ser- vice Award and many more. To sharpen their skills and un- derstanding about Law and Govern- ment, students and teachers attend three Workshops and a Week-end Model Con- gress where they must research their own bills, present topics of Legislation and effectively lobby to get bills passed. This competition involves High School Students and their teachers from all over the State of New Jersey. At the Stockton College Model Congress, Law Political Action students from Plainfield High School were nominated for awards and given special recognition by our Board of Education for their achievements in the program May 17, 1980 P.H.S. students participated with Grant Ave. Community Academic Feature IPLE students also intern at Local and County Level government offices two hours per day, four days a week at least (3) three months during the school year. Through these experiences interns have received summer jobs and many commendations from the City Administrator, City Council Members, the County Prosecutor’s office, etc. From these valuable ex- periences, the students still find time to attend Board of Educa- tion meetings, City Council Meetings, as well as other School and Community func- tions. The class recently recognized Rev. Jesse Jackson, President of Operation PUSH, for his service and commitment to Youth in the PUSH for Ex- cellence Program. When Rev. Jackson came to Plainfield the IPLE students acted as ushers in addition to presenting the award during the program. Because of the success and interest of the Law and Political Action Program, the class has grown from (17) seventeen in- terns to (40) forty students with over (80) eighty freshman Prac- tical Politics students who also work with the Junior and Senior Law Political Action students in many of their ac- tivities. Center in The National Youth Pilgrimage sponsored by Operation P.U.S.H. It was held in Washington D.C. The purpose was to dramatize the need for Youth Employment. Commendation for the Law Political Action Program RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Board of Education has endorsed the Law Political Action Program that is conducted through the Plainfield High School Social Studies Department, and WHEREAS, the Law Political Action Program provides participating students with opportunities to learn through an in- ternship program that currently has 27 students placed with county and local governmental units, and WHEREAS, twenty-six Plainfield High School students in the Law and Political Action Program participated in the 11th Annual Institute for Political and Legal Education’s Model Congress held on March 28, 29, 30, 1980 at Stockton State College, Ocean City, N.J., where students actively prepared and par- ticipated in the development of legisla- tion, caucusing, politicking, and parliamentary procedures, and WHEREAS, four Plainfield High School students were nominated for awards as a result of their participation, now therefore be it RESOLVED, that the Board of Educa- tion give special public commendation to the students of the Law Political Ac- tion Program at Plainfield High School for its educational value to the students, to Plainfield High School and the com- munity, and be it FURTHER RESOLVED, that Mrs. Gloria Taylor, Social Studies Department Supervisor; Mr. Paul Pannone, Law ° Political Action Program Teacher, and Mr. Seymour Marsh, Social Studies Teacher be given special commendation for their continuing efforts to provide Law Political Action Program students with a quality educational program which brings credit to Plainfield High School and the City of Plainfield.
