They assist the League of Women Voters, NAACP and sponsor their own Plainfield High School Voter Registration Drive. They volunteer to work in Democratic and Republican local headquarters to gain lst hand experience on how grassroots politics works. Leadership skills are developed and Law Political Action students are en- couraged to apply their political knowledge by running for school offices. To date more than (7) seven students served as student council officers class officers. Two of these interns were selec- ted to attend the Congressional Seminar and represent their school in Washington D.C. Several of these stu- dents have won school and community awards such as the Prestigions Prin- cipal's Award, Ronald H. Lewis Scholarship Award, Frontiersmen Ser- vice Award and many more. To sharpen their skills and un- derstanding about Law and Govern- ment, students and teachers attend three Workshops and a Week-end Model Con- gress where they must research their own bills, present topics of Legislation and effectively lobby to get bills passed. This competition involves High School Students and their teachers from all over the State of New Jersey. The class recently recognized Rev. Jesse Jackson, President of Operation PUSH, for his service and commitment to Youth in the PUSH for Ex- cellence Program. When Rev. Jackson came to Plainfield the IPLE students acted as ushers in addition to presenting the award during the program. Most students spend 4 years at Plainfield High School, yet | was one of your rare repeaters. I stayed for 9 years and I loved every minute that I was at PHS, just as I really love all of you. I too was educated at PHS during those 9 years I was there, not only in academics, but Laddie also by going to dances, sport events, assembly programs, bake sales and just Wyatt being there in general and being a part of your problems and interests. Believe me, it was hard for me to accept the position at the Board of Education. I'll never be sure that I made the right decision. We look back to the time when Algebra, Chemistry and other complicated courses were not understandable and the joy of finally mastering them. We look back to the togetherness of the teams, the team spirit, the victories, and the losses. We look back to the times of being a part of the school, being able to take a stand for and against, and being able to make something out of the school. But now it’s time to make more advancements in life and to make more achievements. The time has come to venture out into new branches of life and to cultivate ourselves. Experiences of the past can be used for the good of the future; to aid us in becoming a more responsible and capable person. Now is the time for us to look forward. Out Reach The Outreach College Guidance Club began its llth year of operation in September, 1980. The Outreach College Club is opened to Juniors and Seniors in high school. The specific purpose is a complete orientation to assist students in getting ac- cepted into college or vocational schools. Participating members are assisted with application mechanics, financial aid and scholarship information. In addition, the students benefit from waiver of SAT and application — fees. Speakers from colleges and industry regularly addresses the Outreach Club about college and career oppor- tunities. Since the inception of the program, over 500 Plainfield High School students have been directly placed in college by the Outreach Program. L to R: Michelle James, Patti Thomas, Teresa Pearyor The students in the program regularly tour a college during the Spring break and_ visited Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. Students actively raise money through raffle sales, disco, soul food dinners, fashions shows and car washes. The Outreach Club is un- der direction of William Gary, School Social Worker. The principal, Mr. Thompson approved, so, the gospel choir began: 43 strong! We were asked to participate on the Spring Concert and both the student body and the faculty gave such an overwhelming response to our perfor mance, we decided to ask for a date for our very own concert. The date we selected was November 22, 1980, just before Thanksgiving, because we were so very thankful that we were able to have a gospel choir. At the time of the Thanksgiving Concert we had 70 voices. But after that concert, we were flooded with requests to join the choir so we asked for new members. As of January, 1981, we have 100 voices!! On January 15, 1981 we were invited to sing on the Martin Luther King, Jr. program here at Plainfield High School. The response was again, very positive. A disc jockey, Arthur Bailey III from WERA, heard us sing at that program and invited us to come to the studio to be inter- viewed over the radio. The program was aired on January 25 at 2:00 p.m. He has the only gospel program on WERA. We've been asked to sing on numerous programs and invited to give concerts. We gave a concert on January 17 at Maxson School for the benefit of the Maxson School cheerleaders. They needed new uniforms. The program was a success. They sold tickets and raised quite a bit of money. Now, one year has gone by and we are planning for our 1st Anniversary Concert. It will be held on Saturday, March 28, 1981. We’re looking for great things from the gospel choir; Plain- field High School really has something to be proud of! G. Pristell Future Scientists Standing L to R: C. Farmer, A. Freeman, Mrs. A. Under the able leadership of Editor-in-Chief Lenwood Bulford, Milestone workers did not hesitate to make “house calls” to shuffle materials back and forth or to work late into the night. Layout Editor Lynne Jarmon was a bundle of nerves until designs met her approval. Eric Plummer, feature editor, and Marcus Bond frequently did pou when pressed into service as Milestone Taxis, nc. The Senior Section had few difficulties, due to much prior experience in the person of editor, Adamo Uzcatequi-Gaymon. Many eighth period study halls were donated to the cause by Copy Editor Majeeda Haqq and her staff. The Plainfield High School Mens’ and Womens’ Track Teams captured the CHAMPIONSHIP OF AMERICA, 4 x 400 meter (mile relay) Championship at the 87th Annual Penn Relays. For the Ladies it was two in a row, as the team of Lisa St. Clair, Wanda Jackson, Tracey Carter and Tracy Nelson, rounded the track in a time of 3:51 to win for the second consecutive year. The Men broke a twenty year drought, as the team of Tony Ashley, Tony Coleman, Dorell Hilliman and John Marshall sped to victory with a time of 3:13. This was the first Union County team to win a National Championship at the Penns since 1961. Sports Boys’ Baseball Six returning letterman are the foundation of this year’s team, and they are Jeff Johnson, Robert Anderson, Alberto Gonzalez, Chris Sharpe, Carlton Crawley, and Brian Boccher. Promising J.V. players that will see a lot of action are Todd Holmes (1st base), Ed Chavis (OF), Steve Yarborough (catcher), David Beasley (1st Base-DH) and Todd Strictland (OF). Yar- borough, Strickland and Beasley are only Sophomores. This year’s team is led by Jeff Johnson. Jeff had an outstanding year last year making 2nd team All-Union County. He’s not only a fine pitcher but also an excellent short-stop. He also hit 340 last year. This year’s pitching staff consist of Jeff Johnson, Robert Ander- son, Carlton Crawley and Brian Boccher. Ed Chavis may also get some action in this area. Todd Holmes: Todd at this point is the starting 1st baseman. He hit and fielded well on the J.V. team last year. Eddie Chavis: Eddie will be an outfielder this year. He has the potential of being an outstanding ball player. Chris Sharpe: Chris will play 2nd base this year. He is an out- standing fielder. Alberto Gonzalez: Alberto is an outfielder and an outstanding hit- ter. He works hard at the game. Robert Anderson: Robert will play in the infield as well as pitch and catch. He had a good year last year win- ning 3 games as a pitcher on the varsity level. He can have an outstanding year this year. Carl Crawley: Used primarily as starting pitchers this year. Brian Boccher 110 R. Anderson E. Chavis C. Crawley B. Bernado THE GIRLS’ SOFTBALL TEAM The 1980 Plainfield High School Girls’ Softball Team was led by 1980 graduate Teresa Jones. Teresa was an outstanding outfielder, leading the team in putouts and assists. The team ended with a disappointing 3 wins and 13 losses record, however, many of the losses were by close scores to many of the areas’ stronger teams. Coach Robinson promises that 1981 team will be a vastly improved and exciting team. Seniors Sharon Banks, who was an Honorable Mention All-Union County Catcher as a Junior, returns as does Charlene McCoy at second base, and Wanda “Ice” Sergeon in centerfield. Senior Ty Myers also promises to be one of the stronger pitchers in Un- ion County. The team plays a very daring, speed- oriented game with lots of bunting and attempted steals. Underclassmen again figure to contribute heavily to the 1981 team. Juniors Lisa and Lana Lanier will once again anchor the infield at first base and shortstop. Susan Terry, Dawn Parks, Jackie Byers, Paula Echols, Charlene Singleton and Dora Williams are all expected to have out- standing seasons. The year 1981 will also mark the addition of a Junior Varsity Softball Team coached by Mr. Wollman. The team will once again hold its’ end of the season awards picnic at Hub Stein Field. D. Girls’ and Boys’ Tennis and Golf The 1980 Girls’ Tennis Team was one of the strongest teams in our school’s history. The record of nine wins and ten losses does not accurately measure this success. Tennis in Union County was never stronger, with powers such as Union, Westfield, Cran- ford and Union Catholic all ranked among New Jer- sey’s best. The Lady Cardinals scored an impressive team victory over Union with their three undefeated players. Co-Captain Tyraina Myers set a school record at First Singles, with 14 victories. Tyraina gave Plainfield “first time ever” victories over powerful Union Catholic and Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Alicia Gipson and Co- Captain Heather Faraone gave Plainfield a well balanced singles attack. Doubles players Cynthia Reese and Gwenn Keaton combined for 10 victories to become one of school’s strongest doubles combination. The Second Doubles team consisted of Ericka Smith and Freshman star Jenny DiMaggio. At times, this explosive pair was capable of beating almost everyone. Rounding out the varsity squad were Juniors Sarah Hengel and Becky Reed. Coach Ken Bandomer T. Farrison, M. Tavarez, K. Rhoden. The Varsity Golf Team The Golf Team this year is comprised mostly of beginning golfers. We have two returning players: Keith Rhoden, senior, and Marino Tavarez, sophomore. Our first year golfers include Seniors Nhan Nguyen and Kathy Reese, and Sophomores Alberto Ortiz and Teddy Farvison. The team’s spirit can be attributed to the fine coaching of Anthony Foti and Mary Ann Lozak. Last season’s final record was five and ten. All of our home matches are played at the West Nine, adjacent to the Plainfield Country Club. Anthony Foti The Boys’ Tennis Team Although the season for the Cardinal Tennis men was not a winning one, it was one during which the member grew in skills, determination and fortitude. We are still growing because the following Juniors and Sophomores comprised the largest segment: Her- minio Estrella, Anthony Williams, Matthew Johnson, Kenneth Pearson, Timothy Jones, Terrence Sterling, Kevin Kelly, Lloyd Vaughan and Anthony Jenkins. Andrew Blackwell, Ryan Sears, Gorathalay Givens, John Hester and Shan Williams were the promising Freshmen that gave us depth. The team was captained by our returning Junior — David Sterling. The team consisted of a host of track athletes preparing for the indoor season. Miles and miles are run by our haniers in Cedarbrook Park and on the road of our city. The Cardinals runners posted a record of 11-3 which is the best season since 1972. This is the 9th consecutive winning season for the Cardinals. John Heany and Jemil Shakir led the Cardinals with support from a strong junior squad of Jeff Johnson, Ludwig Williams and Ken O’Burke. The captain of our team John Heaney had a strong season. He led the Cardinals to a third place team finish in the county invitational and a seventh place team finish in the state sectionals. He broke the school cross country course record (Cedarbrook Park) in the final dual meet of the season. In the county cham- pionship he finished an impressive fifth place. This season saw the Plainfield boys’ tracksters repeating wins in the Union County Championships and New Jersey State Championships. Even many of the names echoed throughout the state are very similar: Marshall, Ashley, Coleman, Hilliman. But this year there were some new names in the limelight like Troy McKoy and Kent Montford. We are very happy about this season mainly because of the improvements made by most of our younger athletes. This will enable our team to have a quality program. All things being equal and with a little help from a force greater than all of us, we'll be able to repeat this kind of record next year. “Mr. Cool” strolls away during the Indoor Track Awards Dinner State Champions Kevin Campbell in the 60 yard dash. 118 J.
