Our program is activity orien- ted involving field trips, field studies, winter campout, spring campout, recycling and aquatic studies. The success of the club is illustrated by its many awards and commendations. It has been recognized by the Environ- mental Protection Agency (EPA), Daily Journal, Courier News, WERA, the Mayor’s office, and other state and local organizations. The jazz ensemble is in its second year. They have played at many organizations throughout the state. This group of young talented men has been playing together since 1977, not only they have performed in the jazz ensemble, but also on bans outside of school. Our saxophonist RICHARD LYNCH has definitely decided to study music and phychology in college. He anticipates a career as a performing musician. “This budding Quincy Jones” also has visions of composing and arranging for national T.V. : CARY POTTS, bass player, intends to teach instrumental music in addition to performing and arranging. Drummer, JAMES MACK, expects to enroll in Kean’s voted music department. He enjoys working with visual effects of stage presen- tations. The percussionist DAVID LEACH plans to take several music courses in college also. He too has had experience working with stage production. STANLEY STEPNEY, the pianist, is also college bound. Undoubtedly, some choir will benefit from his talents. VINCENT ROUNTREE, saxophonist, plans to couple his music with a career in chemical engineering. DAVID TRAWICK, saxophonist is probably bound for a slot in a big college band performing at half-time on national T.V. The “last of these Mohicans,” includes sophomore, JOHN RABY, who really plucks ... picks... and... strums the guitar. Already his creativity looms large! MATTHEW JOHNSON, trumpeter, and youngest of the group is expected to continue. He represents the other part of the core for the future Jazz Ensemble. 22 UL OO 00 Reach Out, Weightlifting, Class Council Clubs va N : oe Reach Out Bible Study Club Y. Stancil and T. Giving up school holidays or weekends to put in long hours of work became the rule; instead of the exception. Yes, occasional snacks and planned parties did “ease some of the pain.” The quiet, but firm leadership of Editor-in-Chief, YOLANDA STANCIL, constantly motivated the group. DARON RIVERS, Layout editor frequently dazzled us with his on-the-spot creativity. The scholarly approach of Special feature and Sports editor, HASSANA HAQQ challenged the staff to try new approaches. JESUS TAVAREZ and CLARENCE EDWARDS input contributed much to her area. Faculty editor, RON CARTER, was imported from the Big Apple last year. Fortunately, he passed our crash course on “who teaches what.” MARK WALKER put in a lot of time supporting Ron. Art editor, CRAIG GEORGES was dubbed “the invisible man”, because he preferred to work in solitude. His cool demeanor prevailed even while we sent him “back to the drawing board.” His support cast in- cluded CHARLES BRASWELL, TOD RICHARDSON, and DAROZ RIVERS. The tables were turned when JEFF MERRITT and CRYSTAL DAVIS served as Underclassmen Club Editors and both were grateful for the aid of Krystal Ferguson, Adrienne Armstrong and Kim Howard. Academic editor JACKIE WILSON was aided by Todd McAllister. TERRI HALSEY ’tended the typing pool; ably assisted by Christine Guy and Joyce Rosa. The ’80 staff has worked hard to tell your story. Boys and girls of mixed sizes have been playing against each other with good sportsmanship, increased skills and sheer enjoyment. Every student of every grade level is having a wonderful time in this fun club. PEP SQUAD One of the newest clubs at the high school this year is the pep squad. Approximately fifty young ladies with lots of pep and loads of school spirit, assisted the cheerleaders in rousing the basketball fans and cheer- ing our team on to victory. Our track star wil compete with 1,200 students who are being considered for 325 National Achievement $1,000 scholarships and some 275 four-year achievement scholarships to be awarded this spring. He has alre ady accepted a four- year scholarship to Harvard from Bell Labs. Stevens Technical Enrich- ment Program (S.T.E.P.) I was selected by the head of guidance at the West Side High to attend S.T.E.P. in the summer of 1976 and have been a member for 4 years. Dur- ing the last 2 years, I was also a member of its Mini- Scholar Program. The Stevens Technical Enrichment Program is located on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. It is an academic program geared toward the areas of math and science. It does, however, offer courses in art, photography, humanities, and other more liberal studies. As a student I can say that S.T.E.P. makes stu- dents strive harder to achieve their goals. If they have no goals, it helps them to form their goals and gives them know-how to achieve them. Hassana B. Haqq Educational Outreach My future goals are to major in Electrical Engineering and minor in Computer Science. These goals were first inspired by a summer science program. During the summers of 1976 and 1977, I attended this program which was held at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. There I worked in a laboratory with computers. I began constructing a simp le computer with the help of my advisor. While in school, during my freshman year, I was involved in the RCA program here at P.H.S. In furthering my “Educational Outreach”, I enrolled into two Engineering programs during the summer of 1979. The first was a science and math program at New Jersey Institute of Technology (N.J.LT.). Here I was introduced to various types of engineering. The program also offered a review or preview to Chemistry and math depending on the student’s academic status in high school. I then attended the M.I.T.E. program on the Bush Campus of Rutgers University in Livingston, N.J. This program also focused on engineering. My participation in these programs gave me a mini experience of college life. I enjoyed the programs and feel that they were a big inspiration to me in my future goals. Yolanda Stancil ‘Union County College An Act of Determination I went to Union County College in Cranford, N.J. to pang up my grades and get more out of Algebra II than I did in High School. I had this course in my Junior year but I didn’t do so well. Because I was determined to do better, I explored the possibility of re-taking this course during the summer, Much to my disappointment I was told that underclassmen were not offered summer sessions. So, I sought to take Algebra II at Un- ion County College. I completed the course and received an ‘A’ which proved to be well worth my effort. Furthermore, I concluded that “DETERMINATION” ts the center of success. David S. Trawick College Course I also attended Union County College on a part time basis. My course of study was Psychology. By taking this course I ob- tained 3 credits that will be credited to my college courses next year. ” This program, just as the summer sessions, was offered only to seniors. The courses that were available were Psychology, Sociology, English Composition, and Accounting. I feel that this program was beneficial to me, because it gave me an idea of what college life is really like. Consequently, it has helped to prepare me for college. Jacquie “Jackie” Wilson Jade Hawkins is also a finalist in the 1980 National Achieve- ment Scholarship Program for Outstanding Black Students. Our Student Council President has also been selected to participate in the Congressional Seminar to be held in Washington, D.C. in April of this year. Minority Introduction to Engineering (M.LT.E.) During this past summer I participated in a program called Minority Introduction to Engineering (MLTE). This program was very beneficial to me in a number of ways. For one, it helped me to improve my math grade because I learned calculus at a college level. It also helped me decide on a future career field by introducing me to several fields and aspects of engineering. In addition to the academic component, the social portion was also enjoyable. I was treated as though I were in college and I loved every momenv of it. I lived in a coed dormatory which had a large recreation room. I played ping pong, pool, went to dances, and leamed a lot at the same time. Vincent Rountree Lafayette Mite Program During the summer of my junior year, I attended the Lafayette M.LT.E. program in Pennsylvania. My participation was mainly in the field of Metallurgy. Also while in the program, I engaged a little in Computer Science. To study metals in more detail, I visited the Bethlehem Steel Plant. I made little metal soldiers and also tested the strength of different metals by building bridges and towers. I feel that the experience I obtained from the Lafayette Program has helped me in the preparing of my future goals. It was very interesting but most of all competitive in the challenge to do well. She has accepted a scholarship from Rutgers College. Stephanie Talbot Marcia Foster, the high scoring Lady Cardinal, has become the third basketball player in the history of Plain- field High School to score 1,000 points in a career. She has accepted a four year basketball scholarship to Seton Hall University. Naval Academy Christopher Flood, has been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. An outstanding student and member of the Plain- field High School Swimming Team, Chris will enter the Academy with the Class of 1984. East Jr. Olympic Volleyball Team I started playing volleyball in Warren, N.J. for Mario Caruso in 1976 and continued for 2 years. I was then asked by Socrates Mosé to try out for the East Jr. Olympic Team in New York. As you can probably guess, I made the team. The team, ran by Socrates Mosé, went to volleyball camp for 6 weeks of training during the summer of 1978 and 1979. Eventhough I was put through vigorous training for 8 hours or more a day, went to several different tournaments a week, and rarely got enough rest, I truly enjoyed the experience of training to be a volleyball star. Susan Madsen National Track Record Dorian St. Clair won the gold medal in the 400 meter run. Her performance was instrumental in bringing a National Mile Relay record to P.H.S. The Coast Guard, established in 1790, is a small elite group of men and women dedicated to helping others. Search and Rescue is the primary mission, and by utilizing air and sea units, assistance is given to those in need. The Coast Guard also assists in polar explorations and aid in law enforcement. Also operated by the Coast Guard are Long Range Navigation (LORAN) stations and several bo tender to aid all sea going vessels. I became interested in the Coast Guard program because I wished to learn, travel, and help others. Elliott Townsend National Basketball Team 1,000 Points! Kenny Fields has been se- lected to play in the Easter Classic All-Star Basketball Tour- nament April 4-5 in Chicago, Il- linois. At present Kenny has been highly recruited by over 150 colleges and universities throughout the country. Kenny Fields has also made 1,000 points in his P.H.S. basketball career. Recently, Kenny was named to the Converse All-American National Basketball Team. He has decided to attend Seton Hall University. National Track Record Gale Counts took the silver medal in the 400 meter run. She also played an important role in the mile relay victory. 83 Baby Pictures See Page 184 for LD. senior Write-Ups THELMA DARLENE ABNEY Doll ... Fashion Fair ... New York ... Exotic ... Scorpio ... Gretchen Tate — Class of ’76 Two years ago at Plainfield High School I was elected to be model of the year. It was the first time I had to compete against 29 or more people. I felt as if I had to let the people know that I was the best for a long time now here was my chance to prove it. The only thing I had to worry about was what to wear. I had to project an image of someone that I admired and if I could I would love to take after her. The image was Ms. Ross (The lady has class!) So I went out and bought some clothes, got my hair cut and was ready for the show. Not too long before the show was about to start one of the girls said that I looked like the image I wanted to project, Ms. Ross. Knowing that I did look like her | — and, hearing it from someone else I knew I was on my way! Now besides doing fashion shows I am affillated with Zur Holographis doing commercials, advertising, photo stock and ed. (Director of Guidance — Hubbard School) Warren E. Guidance and counseling are intended to assist in- dividuals in the understanding of self, in making choices that are personally satisfying and socially effective, and in developing responsibility and self-direction. The mem- bers of the Guidance Department assist and cooperate with other members of the school staff in helping students recognize and develop their varied abilities. The Guidance Counselors share with students and their parents the responsibility for choosing their high school programs, for providing career and educational in- formation, and for helping them with personal problems. The Lady Cardinals swept to an unbeaten 10-0 dual meet record, while they won the Union County and Watchung Conference Championships. The team was led by Senior Captain Dorian St. Clair and sophomore sensation Patty Mulvaney with the supporting cast of Melody Grisby, Lisa St. Clair, Susan Wormley, Mary Hochreiner and Lisa Heaney. The hard work and dedication of the ladies, paid off as the Womens’ Indoor Track Team was ranked number one. They are the “Class of the State.” Setting new records almost every time they stepped on the track, the four- some seniors Dorian St. Clair, Gayle Counts, and juniors Wanda Jackson and Tracey Nelson repeatedly broke the state record for the mile relay. They established a new national mark in the metric equivalent, while com- peting in the Olympic De- velopment Meet at New York’s Maidson Square Garden. The team won titles almost every weekend as seniors Lisa Myers, Sandi Smith, and Carolyn Smallwood handled the sprints. A group of juniors and sophomores including Susan Worm- ley, Melody Grisby, Holly Faraone, Mary Hochreiner paced the Cards in the Distance Events. Freshmen LisaSt.Cleir, Lisa Heaney and Andrea Johnson exploded on the scene to show a sample of what’s to come. The Lady Cardinals also showed strength in the field events as Gwen Cox, Jennifer Cox, Audrey Counts, Sylvia Cooper and Tracey Carter were consistant winners helping the Cards to team victories and individual recognition. The ability of Plainfield to score in every event made them much in demand at invitationals around the state and throughout the Northeast. Five of our leaders were playing varsity tennis for the first time. As the season progressed, it became evident that this group would overcome their inexperience with enthusiasm and aggressiveness. At season’s end, we had completed the second best season record, (9-7) in our school’s history. Co-Captains Susan Madsen and Tyrania Myers helped first-year Coach Ken Bandomer provide the leadership necessary for such an inexperienced group to succeed. Seniors who will be missed next year are: Susan Madsen, Corianne and Cathy Mulvaney, Kim Hamilton and Crystal Davis. Fortunately we will have returning next year a fine group of players with considerable experience. Coach Ken Bandomer Top Left: “I did not throw the ball high enough.” Top Right: “Boy! The team discovered a number of its weak points and set forth goals in a program for improvement. Seniors Parish Brown, Vincent Rountree, Richard Lynch, and Anthony Robinson performed well. Juniors Roger Cassett and John Brown should also be com- mended for their efforts. “A Word From A New Coach” At the time that the Yearbook goes to publication, I will not have had any time to work with the team. However, I wish to ex- press my feelings. Needless to say, our work is “cut out” for us! There will be un- told hours of practice drills that conditions both our physical and mental abilities. These sharks truly have the toughest swimming schedule in the state. The seniors are Chris Flood, Vergil Fuentes, Susan Madsen, Cathy Mulvany, and Vince Rountree. Chris Flood is known best for his 200 yd. Individual Medley. Vince Rountree is one of the best breaststrokers in the county. Vergil Fuentes is best in the butterfly. While both Susan Madsen and Cathy Mulvany are best for the 100 yd. back stroke. Chris Flood holds two school records. This year he broke a 14 year old record in the 200 yd. freestyle event. He also holds the 500 yd. freestyle record. Vincent Rountree holds the 100 yd. breaststroke record. He is the first black swimmer ever to break a record at P.H.S. He has also been undefeated in the regular season. Chris Flood and Vincent Roun- tree were the co-captains of this years team. We congratulate the team for its spectacular perfor- mances, despite tough odds. Coach Lewis Wonsidler has really motivated his team. The Sharks!! Girls’ Track Once is never enough! The hard work and dedication of the ladies, paid off as the WOMENS’ IN- DOOR TRACK TEAM was ranked num- ber one and the class of the state. Setting new records almost every time they stepped on the track, the foursome of seniors Dorian St. Clair, Gayle Counts, and juniors Wanda Jackson and Tracy Nelson repeatedly broke the state record for the mile relay. They established a new national mark in the metric equivalent while competing in the OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT MEET at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The team won titles almost every weekend as seniors Lisa Myers, Sandi Smith, and Carolyn Smallwood handled the sprints with a group of juniors and sophomores including Susan Wormley, Melody Grisby, Holly Faraone, Mary Hochreiner paced the Cards in the dis- tance events while freshman Lisa St. Clair, Lisa Heaney, and Andrea Johnson exploded on the scene to show a sample of whats to come. The Lady Cardinals also showed strength in the field events as Gwen Cox, Jennifer Cox, Audrey Counts, Sylvia Cooper and Tracey Carter were consis- tent winners helping the Cards to team victories and individual recognition. The ability of Plainfield to score in every event made them much in demand at invitationals around the state and throughout the northeast. A VISITE LO HEARTBREAK CIL y 7. The 1979 season was going to be one of the best seasons ever. Was ... is a mighty big three letter word. INJURIES is an even bigger word and the one word any athletic team hopes to stay away from. Injuries caught us this past year and we were forced to pass through Heartbreak City. We did have some outstanding play in our four victories. Randy Young’s outstanding catch against Camden. Ken Helds super 80 yard TD vs. Camden ... actually running on one leg and all heart. Pat Belgrave coming up from the secondary and making great tackles throughout the season. Clarence Edwards being turned into an offensive tackle after playing mostly fullback for his career and doing a great job. Odel Hines carrying two and three tacklers on his back as he broke through the line. Greg Plummer making a fine catch of a Geofrey Plummer pass and scoring a 31 yd. TD vs. Hamilton West. Eric Plummer starting for the first time vs. Westfield and doing a great job in that thriller. Bruce Schenek im- proving as the weeks went by and ending his career with a great game vs. Westfield. Carl Wade developing into a great defensive end. Reg Moorman filling in for the injured Kent Montford and playing real steady ball. Anthony Coleman going all the way on the kick-off return vs. Camden. Ted Theodosatos making key third down tackles to stop Westfield. James Felton playing his steady game in the defensive secondary as did Randy Wood. John Marshall playing and showing his great potential for the future as a defensive safety. Steve Jackson playing defensive tackle vs. Camden the way it suppose to be done. Winfred Keaton playing a great guard until his injury. James Parris becoming the starting offensive center and not allowing anyone to take the position away. Pierre Loizeaux making two key fumble recoveries in two of our four victories. Thur- man Thomaston making his crushing tackles on kick-off coverage. Eddie Southgate playing his usual steady offensive guard and being the only starting offensive lineman to start the first and last game. Henry Fudge, Kevin Robinson, Donald Dixon and Anthony Ashley making their mark during the season especially in our victories. 1. “Why me??” 2. “They’re like mosquitos” 3. “Lights out... ” . “Get him Odel” 3 point play . “Gee, she has nice legs!” “T didn’t mean to hit him that hard!!” “Ain't no stopping me now!!” “All mine!” “No way!” Touchdown “We've got to stop meeting like this” . “After the hit!!!” 8.
