Introduction ... Pg. 1 Today's Leaders ... Pg. 7 NnHwzmiazoao Tomorrow's Leaders ... Pg. 19 Future Leaders ... Pg. 79 Athletics ... Pg. 111 Activities .. . Pg. 145 Senior Directory Biography ... Pg. 165 Advertisements ... Pg. 174 THE END OF A DREAM ..... - A STEP INTO REALITY. « . All reality was first a dream. The greatest accomplish- ments, past and present were foremost dreams. Dreamers hold the key of hope and promise for a better world. The many writers, poets, doctors, nurses, and athletes were for a time dreamers. Nurture your dreams, do not let them be toppled by people who do not understand. For out of them will grow reality. Dream, lofty dreams, give yourself no limit to what you can achieve. Your dreams are the promise of what you can and shall be. The seeds you are now planting as dreams can one day be reality and it will be fun to see them beginning to grow. aml apesianensaalnanin 0 i ai es Think positive. Do not imagine that just because of your race, religion or where you live your dream is an im- possibility. Your dream can take you anywhere if you are willing to make some sacrifices. Your dream cannot be realized without effort. Nothing is going to be offered to you on a silver platter. You must go out there and get it yourself. Your life is not ruled by chance. Strive to reach your dream to make it your reality. For the dream that you en- vision, the idea that is within your heart, this you can build your life by and this you will build your life around. We had just one starting player back from last year’s squad, that was Randy Young 6 ft. 4 in. center who is now a junior Other players returning were, Ken Fields, Charlie Cole, Michael Gordon, and Peter Coleman. Both Ken Fields and Charlie Cole, played their role well in coming off the bench. These two players saw the most action as reserves going into the season of 1978-79. Basically we have a young squad and our players are receiving game experience along with confidence to help their game play. At the time of this article our Basketball team had a record of 9 wins, 4 losses along with being winners of our own ‘‘Plainfield Christmas Invitational Tour- nament” for the fourth con- secutive year by defeating a big talented Atlantic City team by the score of 51-49. The winning basket being made by Ken Fields with just 23 secs. left in the ball game. Other big wins came over teams such as: Union, Bayonne, Westfield, St. Anthony's of Jersey City, Elizabeth and Linden. Losses were to teams such as: Camden 55-53; Elizabeth 79-75 double overtime; Linden 85-71; Franklin Township 84-80 overtime. We have three seniors on our squad and all three played an important role, game after game, offensively and defensively. These seniors are Charlie Cole, Peter Coleman and Michael Gordon. All three are guards and these three student athletes will further their education on the College level, September 1979 with Grants in Aid or Scholarships. 128 129 PHS Power MARCHING NEW JERSES mrLNs tibu Girls’ Basketball LADY CARDS The lady Cards started the 78-79 season with a string of 13 victories and no defeats. Last year’s seniors left a tremendous void that will be filled, for the most part by talented but inexperienced athletes. In spite of this, we are happy to have a few of last year’s aces returning. The people whom we expect to do well are: Butch Riddick in the sprints and 400 yard dash; Kevin Turner in the hurdles; Mark Henry and Junior Cox in the jumps and the hurdles; Blake Jackson in the pole vault, and Robert Penn in the distance races. Our predictions came true!! 1. The Cardinals are country champions! in the 240 yard shuttle-hurdle relays. 2. We're state record-holders in the high- jump relay after setting a new state record of 13 ft! 3. We’re county champions in the 880 yd. relay! 4. A Cardinals set a record in the long jump at the Lehigh University meet. 5. The Cardinals won first place gold watches for the 135 yd. hurdle relay at Providence, Rhode Island. 140 The girls’ track team has seen success by winning the county championship for the past two years, and the 1979 year looks just as good. The team will be led by seniors Betsy and Kathy Hetfield (distance events), Tracy Myers and Tanya Guy (throwing), and Venus Hunt (long jump). Also competing will be state championship Lisa Myers, Dorian St. Clair, Tracey Nelson, Wanda Jackson and Susan Madison. 141 Seven players from last years varsity will be return- ing.
