After the first weeks of confusion — learning names, wandering about the halls, finding classrooms, we settled down to serious work. With the aid of our new class advisor, Mr. Milt James, we began to transpose ourselves into the DYN-O-MITE (lasso 7 7. During the following year as sophomores, we felt the burning of desire and anticipation within us. We were under the leadership of President, June Bell, Vice-President, Valerie Anderson, Secretary, Debbie Muse, and Treasurer, Debbie Myers. We started to build a secure class treasury by holding a dance, entitled, “Dyn-omite Disce. When we returned to Plainfield High School as juniors, the Class of ’77 began another productive year. We could feel the excitement that started in us as freshman begin to rise. A number of us took the PSAT’S and some of us were inducted into the National Honor Society. We began to send away for information about colleges, universities and trade schools. Some of us started to investigate the job market. We held another class election, and Debbie Myers became president, Debbie Muse was elected vice-president, Logina Davis and Michelle Talley claimed the offices of treasurer and secretary respectively. Under the leadership of our class officers and advisor, our enthusiasm as well as our bank account began to increase. We were kept busy holding bake sales and dances. Special time and effort went into the production of the fashion show, “Everything is Coming Up Roses” in honor of our new superintendent of schools Dr. Ronald Lewis. In the fall of 1976, the excitement increased; the class of ’77 began its final phase. Once again, Debbie Myers, Debbie Muse, Logina Davis and Michelle Talley were elected as our class leaders. Debbie Wright was named as chairperson on the Prom Committee. Fund-raising events were held throughout the year including bake sales, dances, and selling of refreshments at certain sports events. In February the Class of 1977 held another fashion show entitled, ‘‘February Love’’, its theme of “Millionaire Affair.” A concert featuring Crown Height’s Affair and a spring carnival were also held in order to raise money. In the early months of 1977, we purchased school rings and were fitted for caps and gowns. These are symbolic tokens that label us as official seniors. seniors. The prom, which was held at the Chanticler in Millburn on June 17, 1977 marked the end of the most important and meaningful years of our lives to date. Although these years have ended, and the sparkles that were in our eyes as freshmen have since exploded, the time spent at P.H.S. will never be forgotten. The happy and the sad, the good and the bad of Plainfield High School will be held in a special corner of our memories for all the days to come. We may scatter all over the world and lead many different types of lives, however, the friends and influences of Plainfield High will always linger with us. COACH’S COMMENT The 1976 Football season was especially great, and the class of 1977 contributed much to the team’s success. The team won eight games, more than any Cardinal football team since 1967. The team earned the right to play in the finals of the North Section II, Group 4 Championship game. We can look back with great pleasure on the fact that we were the first high school team to play in the Meadowlands, home stadium of the professional Giants. The icing on the cake was that we were the fir: high school to win at the Meadowlands. Our victory over Thomas Jefferson (27-14 was the highlight of the season. Our seniors must be remembered. Jeff Blanchard made all those great tackles. Lavon Preayer caught that TD pass in the Meadowlands. Anthony Robinson scored on two great kickoff returns. Sam Curry used his broken field running. George Theodosatos supported the team with his power running. Bill “Buck” Danner gave his excellent blocking. Darren Salter ™ supplied his excellent defensive play in the an y ’ : secondary. Eugene Harrison played left tava 3 BI 4 nee: tackle on defense . . . and Tim Cox chase wins down opposing quarterbacks. Henry Jackson smothered the opposing runners. Steve Loizeaux blocked and tackled. Ralpt Marshall preached his “‘“Get On’ sermons. Clayton Tucker won the “Guts” award. Rich Wyatt and Bill Royster were the Gridiron Twins. Carl Hixson got that key first down against Linden. Joe Ciufo buste all of our blocking machines. Scott Monro made key catches. All in all, it was a grea year for the Plainfield Football Cardinals. The team players displayed the courage and determination that was needed to compete with teams larger, stronger and more experienced than themselves. They were behind in most of their games, but their great team spirit caused them to never give up. The seniors must be commended. Most improved player was Dwight Jones with his aggressive defensive play at left fullback. Micheal Font was strong with his defense evading dribbling at halfback. Co-line Captain Billy Lanzone helped with his timely goals and assists and especially his devasting defensive slide tackles. Pete Anderson was our “‘Pele”’ with his moves and exciting goals which lifted the team spirit. Team Captain, Most Valuable Player, Gerald Shaw contributed with 162 saves and excellent defensive play. The team compiled a 7 3 record, including three shut out victories. The Cardinals also placed second in the Watchung Conference and fourth in the State Sectionals. Mark Poulin was our top runner and earned honors by winning the Watchung Conference Championship race and placing 2nd in the State Sectional Championships. James Cooper, Robert Penn, Greg Smith, Chris Person, Aaron Gibbs, Stan Belin, Chris Woodard, and Butch Owens rounded out the team. Never in a million years would I have imagined myself as a coach for a high school varsity team. At the termination of this fall tennis season, I can’t imagine not being a coach. We began the season with limited tennis experience. My rookie status as coach coupled with a minimum roster painted a bleak picture at the beginning of the season. Momentum picked up quickly. Our first win against Rahway pleasantly surprised us. I remember visions of grandeur — we might win another! and we did. Many opponents legitimately reputed to posses fine tennis skills, did not Shut out against Plainfield. Your enthusiasm for the sport was contagious. I came to you with a mild case of tennisitis — and now have a monumental, incurable case of the disease. Each of you possessed a determination to do the best you were able. There was a unique level of pride for your playing. Yet your concern for individual skills never interfered with the team spirit we nurtured. We were truly a team. Each school you played remembers you as a friendly, helpful, well-rounded team. You were willing to reach out for a handshake even when you didn’t feel like it. You set the tone of the match in the true spirit of interscholastic athletics. There was dignity in your style. I was ever so proud to be the coach. It is important that you realize this season’s accomplishments have set a precedent for next year. The team roster has increased. We received sports page coverage. Your tennis abilities improved tremendously. The Union County Tennis Tournament was held on our home courts. You were simply tremendous in so many ways. To the graduating seniors — I wish you much peace and success. I’m only sorry that we didn’t have more time to get to know each other. And to everyone — simply thanks for making my first year as coach a memorable one. You gave me so much and made the job a purely joyful experience. COACH’S COMMENT Last year, the Plainfield basketball team claimed the state championship in the Group IV division. This was the first time in the school’s history, that the team had gone that far in tournament competition. Enroute to the championship, the team registered important victories over Bloomfield and Neptune who ranked third and first in the state respectively. This year, the Basketball Cardinals started out in fine fashion winning their first four games. Subsequently, were ranked second in the state behind East Orange. Then Rondy Tucker, the big man of the team was hurt. His injured knee required surgery. He was out for 15 games, during which the Basketball Cardinals were 7-8. Rondy’s absence, though it hurt the team, at least gave the younger players such as Derek Roach, Huey Wright, and Henry Foster, a chance to play. The experience should help them next year. Even with Rondy on the sideline, the Basketball Cardinals still managed to finish in a tie for first place with Linden and Westfield in the tough Watchung Conference American Division. Rondy returned to the line-up in time for the Union County Tournament, and carried the Cardinals to the semi-finals, where they bowed to a strong Roselle team, 77-73, the eventual tournament winner. COACH’S COMMENT The Plainfield Girls Varsity Basketball Team powered to a fourteen game winning streak after dropping its first two encounters. Under new coach, Harry Lambert, the team began to catch hold and display some individualism as well as team talent. Despite the inexperience, the team exhibited a strong defense with a fast-breaking offense. In its second year of the Union County Girls Basketball Tournament, the team reached the semi-finals in competition with fifteen other teams. The Cardinals ended the season with 14 wins and 4 losses. Coach Lou Wonsidler, Assistant Coach Mario Diez COACH’S COMMENT The Swim team got off to a slow start this season with about one-third of the team out with football, color-guard, flag squad, band, etc. until after the Championship Game in December. The season opened with the Cards losing to Pingry in a close and exciting meet. The team made a strong showing in our Holiday Invitational Meet, placing third. The big wins of the season were — topping Montclair in the last relay — sweeping past Rahway, Cranford, Jefferson, and taking pleasure in upsetting a strong Union Catholic team. The By-Word of the season was “What happened to the heat?” The seniors of the swim team are to be remembered. Co-Captain Tom Allen spent three years on the Varsity team. He swam backstroke, made the 60 club the last practice of the year and if anyone was heard saying “Guess who’s sick?”, we would know that they were referring to Tom. Another senior on the team with two years is Trish Flood. She was always ready to help in any event, and could be heard saying, ‘““What me, do 100 yards butterfly?!’ at almost every meet. Scott Hyney, only on the team one year was a real hard worker. He swam the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, and it was great having him on the team. He made the 60 club in between discussions of what concert he would attend next. One of the two seniors who was on the team for four years is Bonnie Laube. She is a hard worker and a member who is always at practice each day with a cheerful smile. It was great to have her as part of the team. Our other Co-Captain and four year varsity man is Steve Loizeaux. He was an outstanding swimmer and currently holds the school record in the 100 yard backstroke. He is a member of the 55 club. Steve knows all the answers and thinks of himself as Coach Loizeaux. Our remaining senior is Kevin O’Rourke. He was on the varsity team for two years and is an extremely hard worker. He swam the 200 yard freestyle event and is also a member of the 60 club. He is this years most improved senior and at the meets he could often be heard to say, ““Gee coach, can’t I swim the 50?” 163 aN i | Ist ROW: (left to right) Kendell Roney, David Graves, Kevin Martin, Ben Costa, Harold Brown, William Danner. 2nd ROW: (left to right) Assistant Coach Edwin White, Coach Helion, Mike Brown, Reggie House, Jacob Johnson, Robert Hall, Nilem Reider, Coach Mussamano, Coach Kristopech. 3rd ROW: Billy Carter. Drama Club consists of a number of enthusiastic students, who are interested in learning about the dramatic arts. These students know that producing a play involves a great deal of time and energy, and they are willing to dedicate themselves to this cause. At the present time, the members of the Drama Club are involved in the reading of various plays. After evaluating these plays, they will then pick a play to produce and begin the process of staging it. It is certain that our Drama Club will turn any play it chooses to stage into a box office hit. The staff of our school newspaper, “The New Entree,” is doing just that. They are learning about printing a newspaper by actually producing one. Members of the staff learn by getting out and reporting on activities in the school and in the community. Photographers take pictures of some activities in order to make the stories more interesting.
