Mr. Sidney Mace | | | Foreword Our class of 1976 “has run its course, and for us there is no tomorrow here — only the lingering memories of a happy yesterday.” ' In our four years, there have been failures yet triumphs, work yet play, and the memory of these will never be forgotten. Our class cannot forget that its country will celebrate its two-hundredth anniversary this year. Plainfield is one of the many cities in the United States that is exploring its history. This book will attempt to reflect upon the past and present of our community and our school. We, the MILESTONE Staff, hope that we have helped to recall not only the memories of your friends and your high school days, but glimpses of the past of the community that is ours. Terry L. The original high school was built in 1867, only twenty years after the founding of the Public School System. It was the second high school to be formed in the state of New Jersey. It was located on Fifth Street and Arlington Avenue and was known as Stillman School. The building had eight rooms, four of which were used for the secondary school. The first graduating class boasted eight students. As the result of a growing population, the old Seventh Day Baptist Church accommodated Plainfield’s students in 1897. In 1904, after more overcrowding, the cornerstone of the Plainfield High School building was laid in the Baptist Burial ground. In 1929 and in 1937, additions to this building were added. In 1959, Plainfield High School was established as a three year high school. In 1966, plans for a new high school were approved. In September, 1970, the new building located at 950 Park Avenue was opened. In 1972, Plainfield High School added a ninth grade class in order to establish a full four year program. Today, the Plainfield High School Complex includes two buildings, housing over 2,600 students. MUHLENBERG HOSPITAL Muhlenberg Hospital is located on the corner of Randolph Road and Park Avenue and was founded in 1877. Besides the 510 available beds, Muhlenberg is known as a voluntary, community teaching center, serving about 60,000 persons annually. There are five nationally accredited educational programs conducted at the hospital in addition to a specialize d medical education program. Muhlenberg is also affiliated with Union College and Rutgers Medical School. Plainfield is fortunate to have industrial development, a large downtown shopping area, a hospital, a good public school system, a public library, and even two large parks, along with several smaller parks comprising a well-rounded city. The two major parks in Plainfield are Greenbrook Park and Cedarbrook Park. They are located at opposite ends of town. Pictured here is Cedarbrook Park, which is located off Park Avenue and bordering South Plainfield. Cedarbrook and Greenbrook Parks each have a pond for fishing in spring and summer and ice skating in winter. They also have several baseball diamonds, tennis courts, and playground equipment for children. Cedarbrook Park boasts a brook, and picnic areas, and is well known for its Shakespeare and Iris gardens. Today Plainfield has a population exceeding 45,330. Although the city is primarily residential in character, it possesses a number of major industries that make it the business center of central New Jersey. Its chief manufacturers include: automotive equipment, painting, aircraft parts, storage tanks, machinery, chemicals, garments, appliances, printing presses, metal products, trophies, electric components, along with several others. Plainfield also has over 50 historical sites. Besides these historical spots there are also many modern sites such as the Public Library and the new building of PHS itself. . a look into the past BABCOCK BUILDING George H. Babcock, supposedly one of Plainfield’s first millionaires, was a great inventor. He built one city block, thought to be one of the finest architecturally between New York and Philadelphia. One building, built in 1893, located on West Front Street and Madison Avenue, was known as the Babcock Building. This building was five stories high and had many offices, such as a post office and department store. On March 6, 1902, the building was destroyed by one of the largest fires in Plainfield’s history. This meeting house, still serving Plainfield’s Society of Friends, lent its name to the pet community, which officially became ‘Plainfield’, Kall os — pice ailooe aumesy when the post office was established in 1800. This is Plainfield’s only surviving 18th century building in the center of town — the Quaker Meeting House. The Quaker Meeting House DRAKE HOUSE i i ae The Drake House, located at 602 West Front Street, is said to have been Washington’s es eae Headquarters in Plainfield during the Battle of CAE Ae Short Hills in the American Revolution on June Heat AU 26, 1977. This house was built by Issac Drake in 1745 and was passed on from generation to generation within his family. In 1864, it was purchased by John Harburger, who added several rooms to the house. In 1920, the West End Civic Associat ion bought the house in order to preserve it. The deed was later transferred to the Historical Society of Plainfield and North ot Plainfield. It is maintained today as a public ca nies eee eee museum by the Historical Society and the City of Daake Haws, Planfall 2.) The main purpose of the club was to have a mother’s organization in which problems concerning the schools could be worked out through meetings with the faculty. It was during these meetings, that the idea of forming a club devoted to literature, art, science, and other related fields surfaced. In 1888, a constitution was‘adopted, and the club was christened, ““Monday Afternoon Club’. It was named this because the meetings were held on the afternoons of the first and third Mondays of each month. ets is peter eh F Ziel oteg Pham fateh Ce ued Walon Plainfield Railroad Station Old Man Hachet’s House CITY HALL Until 1918, Plainfield had no City Hall. The Cutter Building which later became Kreison’s Billard Hall was the earliest known place where the city council met. Later, the Stillman Music Hall on West Front Street was used. From 1891 until 1902, council meetings were held in the Coward Building on Park Avenue. The old Smalley building on North Avenue was used from 1902 till City Hall was occupied. The property at Watchung Avenue and East Sixth Street was purchased for $31,000 from Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks for construction of a $200,000 City Hall. The cornerstone was laid February 17, 1917. The only major change made in the building since it was built has been the addition of an elevator, completed in 1958. There was something special about this particular class, this class of 1976. They were the first students to attend Plainfield High School as freshmen in recent history. They were there to see the P.H.S. athletic teams — nearly all of them — return to past glory after years of domination. They were destined to graduate in the year of the nation’s bicentennial. But, most of all, they had style, a certain flair. They were different. They came out of Junior High School not knowing what to expect, but determined to try their best. They were going to make it work. They were homeroomed and fed in the old building, but, they did not complain. Nor did they complain when the rules were changed, putting some of them, as seniors, back in old building homerooms. No, they endured it silently. This was a sign of their style, their merit, their class. Yes, they were special. They saw a lot of things in their four years at P.H.S., this class of 1976. They saw a basketball team in 1975 go 25-1 only to be beaten in a controversial game in the state tournament; They saw a track team become champions of the entire state. They say a very cold day in December, 1974, on which a record eight false fire alarms were committed. They were disappointed at an almost football victory on a very wet Thanksgiving day in Westfield in their senior year. They laughed together, cried together, danced together and worked to- gether and stuck together. It’s almost over now. They’ve just about made it. It took “guts”, determination, poise, love and, above all, pride. In June, 1976, they will be gone; to college, to work, to life, and when they are gone the people will remember. They will remember next year as the class of 1977 tries to replace this class. They will remember in the years to come as the 1976 graduates return as suc- cesses in business, athletics, leadership and just about every other conceivable lifestyle and profession, because this was also the class of 1976. But, mostly, the people will remember the style. Yes, from the very beginning, they were something special, this class of 1976. Some- thing very special. 95 Taken from 420 Oracle UNDERCLASSMEN APRIL 22 100 — (SITTING, Left to Right): L’von Reaves, Shujar Ghamen, Monica Damon, Kelly Weeks, Valdette Thomas, Derek Staggs, Al Watson. MILESTONE is the annual report of activities and personalities of Plainfield High School explained in words and pictures. MILESTONE is also repository of memories contained between the covers of a book. MILESTONE portrays the joy of companion- ship, the excitement of athletic competitions, the orderly confusion of changing classes, the frustration of examinations, and finally, the goal — graduation. In Plainfield High School all of these things are symbolized by the cardinal, a bird. The very word cardinal embraces almost all of the aspects of the high school. It begins with the cardinal numbers one, two, three and four, for the years we have spent here; it includes the cardinal virtues of justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude; it glows with cardinal red for brightness of high school life; its rays extend to the cardinal points of the compass: North, East, South, and West; and it is the keynote of the years we have spent at Plain- field High School.’’1 Taken from 1959 MILESTONE MAOHHMMrHeSs KA OKNMA=H0D FOKZAMn LINDA ABRAMS 766 Woodland Avenue MICHAEL L.
