But soon! became tired of watching, And went fo find sleep, to forget... Marty Hanneman Plaintalk, 1969. “Remember that there is a meaning beyond ab- surdity. Be sure that every little deed counts, that every word has power, and that we can do our share to redeem the world in spite of all absurdities and all frustrations and all disappointments. Above all, re- member that the meaning of life is to build a life as if it were a work of art. You are not a machine. And you are young. Start working on this great work of art called your own existence.” Dr. Heschel i ORAS Surrounded by strangers Not only by strange faces but in many ives led ifferent | d ifferent places and s tuations d cepa cir ® =) “ Fo} 2) = Zz N = “fon oo on. ote) eee LO Si o = BS eS Se ae oe ee ee gs VP) et) por pee en 5 ase pO me See Omer ogee pate meen Ot See A fone NS is) ae = Suwa meek SOS OG) re (6) (G6) en gt? The group’s purpose is two- fold: firstly, to stimulate awareness of man’s effect on the land and, secondly, to work for the improve- ment of our environmental conditions. E.A.R.T.H. par- ticipants, assisted by Mr. Wong, keep busy by involv- ing themselves in recycling, building artificial reefs for ocean life and launching a campaign against litter. CHESS | SKI The Ski Club of PHS, under the su- pervision of Mr. McGill, is an active group of students who enjoy their sport. They can be found weekly on the slopes of Vernon Valley working on technique and having a great time. Despite occa- sional casualties, the club has managed to keep on its feet, both on the slopes and off. Several students joined together this year and decided it was about time that PHS started a chess club. Conse- quently, a good number of eager chess fanatics, inspired by the charm of the notorious Bobby Fischer, began digging up old strategy books and playing the game. The dedicated club members and their advisor, Mr. Amerikhas, can be found poring over chess boards almost every day after school; a lot of time and thought goes into the game. When our chess team is busily engaged in a match against another school, positive results can almost always be seen. The Library Council, which works with the PHS librarians, is one of the school’s most faithful service organizations. The club finds time to assist the student body at the circulation desk and throughout the rest of the library. The council meets Friday mornings to discuss books, projects and fund raising events. The National Honor Society is both a school club and a service organization. The group, with the help of Ms. Lewitt, keeps busy with tutoring and with a newly instituted Children’s Theatre group which performs for the enjoy- ment of hospitalized patients. All mem- bers of the Henry Banta Chapter meet the requirement of a B average and good conduct according to faculty rec- ommendations. SHN Aavadl PLAINTALK USHERS The PHS Ushering Squad, under the supervision of Mr. Thompson, ushers at all school assemblies, evening functions and special events. The squad’s service is indispensible to PHS and all its “stage” activities. Plaintalk, under the supervision of Ms. Rifino, is the literary group of PHS. The club judges poetry and prose sub- mitted by members of the student body and, in many cases, does quite a bit of its own writing. A magazine is published anually containing all poetry, essays, short stories and art work which the group selects. Members meet weekly and discuss works and the meaning of the word esoteric. The Entree, PHS’s school newspaper, does a thorough and imaginative job of record- ing and commenting on national as well as local and school events. Mr. Beehler helps the staff in the organization of their publi- cation but, in most cases, leaves the actual content of the articles up to the writers. Because there are always stories to be writ- ten and deadlines to be met, the writers and editors are more than busy. HAFT B.S.U. S The Black Student Union, assisted by Mr. James, is responsible for promoting black awareness among the _ students ‘and faculty at PHS. The group was formed in order to meet the growing student demand for the expression of the black point of view. The executive board is the organizational power be- hind the union. Shaft, a PHS newspaper, is the ve- hicle used to express the feeling of black awareness promoted by the Black Student Union. Mr. Robinson and his staff organize and put out this publica- tion for the purpose of expression among the students; it is the official BSU paper. The Junior Classical League was cre- ated in order to stimulate an interest and appreciation of the civilization, lit- erature and language of ancient Rome. Mrs. Camp and all JCL members par- ticipate during the year in various games, songs, discussions and an elab- orate Latin banquet. The German Club of PHS is headed yy Mr. Buccellato. The group is made ip of all those students who have a common interest in the German lan- juage and customs. They meet after chool to discuss projects which help amiliarize them with the German way fF life. : FAP OTR TE OS TE LOST GS BS: Soteey 8a eee NVWadd | 13 f HANDBOOK | CHORUS This year’s chorus, under the direction of Ms. Floyd, has demonstrated its creative talent in both practice and concert. The selection of songs used for performances and the style in which they are pre- sented becomes more progressive and rhythmic each year because new concepts and techniques in music are being experimented with. The Handbook Club is a small group of students who, under the supervision of Mr. Schell, are in charge of organizing and putting out the PHS hand- book every year. The PHS band, under the direction of Mr. ‘ws Duchin, is one of the most talented and ded- icated groups. They practice after school and Saturdays in order to put together their half-time show during the football season. FL, The band also performs in concert and at special festivals so that their schedule is a , busy one. ik SE. 147 os A.V.| REACH OUT ' : if | The Reach Out Club is a Bible study group which originated two years ago. The group, under the guidance of Mr. Buccellato, hopes to show the Bible in its full context as the word of God. The club is a religious learning experience for its members. The Audio Visual Aids Squad is in charge of all projection and stage work in PHS. The group, headed by Mr. Zlas- ney, meets every morning during home- room period. The members spend most of their time distributing films through- out the building, keeping equipment in working order and helping out back- stage for assemblies and plays. The Student Council, under the advice and guid- ance of Mr. Marsh and Ms. Bender, encourages school spirit and unity and gives the student body the opportunity to express itself. This year the Stu- dent Council arranged a student exchange program, the Friday Evening Recreational Program (FERP) and various fund raising projects. The officers this year were: Leo Black (President), Albert Davis (Vice-presi- dent), Mickey Minister (Secretary-Recorder), and Mike Epstein (Treasurer). TONAOD LNICGNLS 149 Mr. Sierge, for the third consecutive year, is in charge of the PHS Golf Club. The group is set up in order to stimulate an interest in the students to form a strong and dedicated golf team. The members are given demonstrations throughout the year and praactice their “swinging” technique. The Future Business Leaders of Amer- ica Club is comprised of all students who are involved in one or more busi- ness courses and hope to make business their future. The group is intended to stimulate an interest in enterprise and to help better acquaint students with this field. The group is headed by Ms. Grace and Ms. Smith. The Health Services Club, advised by Mr. Seaman, was formed for the pur- pose of serving the community and at the same time, learning about the vari- ous health career opportunities avail- able to high school students. The club takes several field trips to various hos- pitals, studies the problems of public health and often performs service ac- tivities. One of these was the stuffing of several thousands envelopes for the Heart Association during its annual drive. The PHS Key Club, headed by Mr. Falocco, is a service organization spon- sored by the Plainfield Kiwanis Club. So far this year the members have vis- ited handicapped children at the Chil- dren’s Specialized Hospital in Moun- tainside and raised money for charity through their annual Foul-Shooting Contest. Other such fund-raising affairs are planned for the future. Ad | SADIANIS HLIV3H 152 DRAMA ete ee The members of this year’s Drama Clu b spend most of their time working on improvisational theatre and practicing for their dramatic presentations with di- rectors Eiffert and Meacham. Their productions this year have included “Skin of Our Teeth”, “The Cave of Salamanca”, and “Bye, Bye Birdie”. The club meets Friday mornings during activity period to read scenes, work on skits and discuss performances. D.E.C.A., Distributive Education Clubs of America, is a group designed for students involved in the Distributive Edu- cation program at PHS. The student- officers are chosen by the members of the club and Ms. Rolak, the D. E. teacher-coordinator, serves as the ad- visor. The group is a non-profit, non- political, non-sectarian organization. The Spanish Student Union, under the supervision of Mr. Latham, was formed this year primarily for the purpose of obtaining a bilingual faculty member. The group meets Friday morning during activity period to develop a sense of unity and awareness among Hispanic students. AS: SieV OG PU ESTORY OF WRITING ae cee : 4 3 The inner workings of PHS run smoothly each day with the help of student assistants. This group includes assistants in the front office, guidance office, attendance office, nurse’s office and reading center. Also included are students who tutor at Stillman School under the supervision of Mrs. Gun- dersen and others who tutor at Evergreen School, supervised by Mrs. Hall. The many office aides, who deliver messages and do clerical jobs, provide invaluable service to the secre- taries and administrators, and the tutors generously give their time and knowledge to the benefit of many young school children. ies MILESTONE 156 The Milestone staff consists of these enterprising, but naive students who endeavor to create a year- book, and their beleaguered advisor, Ms. Brannon. “Progressive” and “innovative” are the passwords used to enter the office, which is housed in room 235, along with English books and teachers. Pushing in for the finish. 185 186 People rushing by — too busy to have a conversation with, And then we all say how we're too busy to, Well, deal with the problems in today’s society, Which — as we all realize — are because we are too busy.
