1 MILESTONE 1 oF a6 4 Plainfield High School Plainfield, New Jersey RARY, PLAINFIELD, N.g On these two pages we begin our picture. rm S ate —H J) Foreword Upon graduation, our years at Plainfield High School will become to most of us no more than a fond memory. The work, the fun, the activities—all the experiences that made life at Plainfield High School what it was will blend together in our minds to form a single impression. To better appreciate this impression, we can compare each of the parts of school life to a portion of a complete picture. Each division in this yearbook repre- sents a part of this picture. Moreover, each person has his own pic- ture of Plainfield High School as it appeared to him. This picture will of necessity be clear in some places and hazy in others, for each of us recalls particular memories. Every indi- vidual picture will be different because every person is different. These pictures combine, however, to form one complete work—Our Portrait of Plainfield High School. SENIORS page 26 Contents FASS fl | FACULTY page 6 UNDERCLASSMEN page 88 SPORTS page 132 ACTIVITIES page 108 ba ei pe pe When an artist paints a picture on a can- vas, he begins with an idea which he hopes to portray. We may call this idea his theme. As we paint our picture on these pages, we too have in mind a theme, education. In a sense the faculty may be considered brushes with which we convey this theme to our canvas of words. FACULTY Principal — During this year of tragedy and turmoil, this class climbed to great heights. It was this year that three students received the highest merit rating in the State of New Jersey. Students made outstanding contributions to science. And the class, as a whole, made great progress in setting standards for the school. As you reflect upon your progress over the past three years, you will remember the day you entered and found a huge building with many winding corridors. As the years passed, you learned how to move through these narrow halls in the proper direc- tion. So it was in life; there were twists and turns which brought both joy and sadness, and as you learned how to get around in the building, you learned how to steer your life toward success. Now you graduate, satisfied that you have been given the necessary tools for life. May you continue to be successful with the use of these tools. Re. Be JOHN McCURDY In Memoriam We at Plainfield High School deeply mourn the passing of Miss Rita Kramer. During her years in the English Department here, Miss Kramer was an energetic contributor to the life of our school. In the classroom she was a teacher in the truest sense of the word. In Assembly Committee and Drama Club she inspired those who had the privilege to participate with her in pro- ducing the finest quality work. Although her role has ended with the falling curtain, we will retain many warm memories of Miss Kramer, who showed us by her fine example what it means to be an actress on the stage of life. 11 English James O. Happy birthday, dear Carmen. 78 CLASS HISTORY 1964 tts CLASS OF ‘64 IN REVIEW It was back on September 6, 1961, that the first few dubious sophomores entered the halls of PHS, which was to be their edu- cational habitat for the next two or three years. It was Sophomore Orientation Day, and among other ceremonies we were to hear a speech by our principal, Mr. Wallace F. Gleason. Along with sev- eral more messages by Mr. Gleason, we also listened that year to informal chats by such varied personalities as two PTA Presidents, innumerable enlistment officers, Ann Landers, candidates for class and Student Council offices, our foreign exchange students, and Mr. Sierge. These many inspiring talks instilled in the students a will to succeed, as manifested in the smallest dropout rate in PHS history. It cannot be denied that in the first few weeks many of the sophomores were subjected to good-natured hazing by the upper- classmen. This uncomfortable and embarrassing practice should be abolished, we decided, and all vowed that in the years to come we would not heap ridicule on the incoming sophomore classes. After buying the S. A. T. and the first Entree, the Class of ‘64 settled down to the election of officers. Those selected were Forrester Lee, President; Gordon Maas, Vice-President; Sue Schmidt, Secretary; and Joe Young, Treasurer. As the year progressed, the sophomore class was found to be a welcome commodity sportswise, giving promise of future varsity success. The class’ first independent venture was the ingeniously plan- ned Sophomore Dance, which netted our treasury $.87. Soon after, class dues were instituted. After scrambling through a trying year, we returned to PHS as juniors. Most of our spare time was occupied with heaping ridicule on the incoming sophomore class. Class officers were Forrester Lee, President; Joe Young, Vice-President; Sue Schmidt, Secretary; and John Norton, Treasurer. In an effort to raise money, the class sold PHS bracelets and held another, more successful dance. A high- light of our junior year was a second straight victory in the hotly contested Interclass Play Competition. With two good years behind us, a confident Class of ‘64 entered its senior year. Forrester Lee was re-elected class president. Picked to serve with him were Vice-President Ruth Campbell, Secretary Lisa Mitchell, and Treasurer Paul Kiely. These four took on, in ad- dition to their numerous regular duties, the onerous burden of organizing class reunions. Meanwhile, our pre-eminent position as the greatest class in the greatest school anywhere was solidified when three PHS seniors, Alan Wachtel, Arthur Goldhammer, and William Holaday, obtained the highest scores in all New Jersey on the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. For our Senior Play, the English farce, The Importance of Being Earnest, was performed. Coupled with the suspense of college applications were the Hall of Fame elections, held in December. By midyear, the days to gradu- ation were being counted off one by one. ‘Tis education forms the common mind! Our eminent position was enhanced when we won the Inter-Class Play Award and Barry Kohn was judged Best Actor. In early June, the Prom was held at the Redwood Inn, and on June 16, 1964, 502 of us bade farewell to an institution that has molded our lives for three very important years. Some of us are going on to further schooling, others to work, some into the services. Many will leave Plainfield and travel to other parts of the country or even to other parts of the world. Let us hope, though, that class reunions will feature 100% attendance, and that all of us will remem- ber our sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always unique years at Plainfield High School. Just as the twig is bent the tree’s inclined. Alexander Pope Senior Class Council And Officers 82 Seated, left to right: Forrester Lee, Lisa Mitchell. First row: Pat Hobson, Carol Meaney, Sandie Axelson, Bruce Miller, Steve Bohlen, Bob Podstawski, Richard Jaffe, Pat Wilton, Jim Thompson, who is not a member of the class council but managed to sneak into the picture anyway. Second row: Pat Ferguson, Diana Collins, Sue Zemel, Barbara Shumsky, Kathy Govern, Sharon Lennox, Marcia Deutsch. The senior class council acts as the representative of the entire class in the many activities which that class performs. Among the more significant of these were the supervision of the Senior Play, the obtaining of senior privileges, the selection of a class gift, and, of course, the entire planning and execution of the traditional Senior Prom. We are especially indebted to the class officers, Forrester Lee, Ruth Campbell, Lisa Mitchell, and Paul Kiely, for their part in these important functions. Paul Kiely and Ruth Campbell Susana Chiquito caught in a less serious mood. Susana Chiquito Our foreign exchange student this year is Susana Chiquito, a senior who hails originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador. Although she lives with sophomore Kitty Frickel, Susie is an integral part of the senior class, par- ticipating in such varied activities as Spanish Club, Drama Club, and the Plainfield chapter of the American Field Service. Susie’s ambition is to be a pediatrician. In time, she will return to Ecuador to further her education toward this goal. Foreign Exchange Student “Can we trust them?” SENIOR PLAY CAST—Left to right: James Delancey, Carol Roman, Gordon Maas, Ada Mendelson, Peter Griswold, Mary Anne Lozak, Mark Regan, Ann McNamara, Barry Kohn, 84 Feverish efforts reach a climax as opening night approaches. “Here? Now? But what will the neigh- bors say?” The Class of 1964 will always remember its hilarious production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Special thanks must be given to Miss Virginia Mixer whose inspired direction made this wonderful production a reality. At times even Miss Mixer wondered whether the play would ever be ready, but on the evenings of November 1 and 2 a per- formance was given of which everyone could be proud. This is Miss Mixer’s last year at P.H.S. It is our last year, too. We will leave with the memory of a wonderful and devoted woman and of a fine senior play! “Heartburn, my dear Miss Prism, burn.” heart- 85 Did Most for P.H.S. UNDERCLASSMEN JUNIORS As juniors we eagerly anticipated the arrival of the new class rings, and perhaps not so eagerly the taking of Preliminary SAT’s. The major fund raising event of the Junior Class was the semi-formal Junior Dance, which was held on January 31. Other activities ac- complished during the year were the successful candy sale and the completion of the class banner. Under the capable leadership of President Jack Comune, Vice-President Sue Goldman, Secretary Robin Kartagener, and Treasurer Buddy Herzog, this has been an important year for the Class of 1965. SOPHOMORES Dazed and bewildered, the sophomores started the year with mad scrambles between classes, stubborn locker doors, and frightening bumps into upperclassmen. As the year pro- gressed they found that there are no elevators, that upperclassmen are just “regular guys,” and that all a locker needs is a well-planted kick. Once settled, the Class of 1966 began its high school career with the election of officers: Russell Passarella, President; Marian Lee, Vice- President; Sharon Owens, Secretary; and Kay Meaney, Treasurer. A highly successful class dance was the highlight of the social season. With one rewarding year behind them the Sophomore Class is looking forward to its future years at PHS.
