CLASS HISTORY Thirteen freshmen entered Plainfield High School in the fall of 1955. Their names were Gloria Maxfield, Myron Thurber, Duane Wheeler, Howard Gagne, Carol Sinclair, Reggie Holt, Monroe Chapin, Shirley Fowler, Lucille Bailey, Douglas Hudson, Graydon Neill, Donna Gibbs, and Brenda Orr. Carlton Tenney joined us later in the year. We elected Douglas as our President, Lucille as our Vice President, Shirley as our Treasurer, and Graydon as our Secretary. This year we had three new teachers. Mr. Irwin came as our Principal, Miss Elrick as our English teacher, and Mr. Bishop as our Science and Math teacher. Shirley, Douglas and Howard went out for basketball, and Gloria became a cheerleader. Most of the class joined the chorus, and Gloria, Shirley, Douglas, and Howard were in District Band. We selected 'Tom Sawyer's Morning as our play for the one-act play con- test. Mrs. York, our class advisor, directed it. Myron starred as Huck, and did a very good job, but it must have been too much for him, since we haven't been able to get him to be in another play. ln July, Mr. Brooks took the combined band of Plainfield, Marshfield and Cabot to Plainfield, New Jersey. This was the celebration to honor the Ver- monter, Julian Scott, who had received the Congressional Medal of Honor for a service in the Civil War. sophomores who went were Gloria, Shirley, Doug and Howard. At the beginning of our Sophomore year, we found that we had lost Monroe and that Lucille had been classed as a Iunior. Later Brenda and Carlton also left us. Rita Kennet joined us, however, during the school year. Our class offi- cers were, President - Graydon, Vice President - Howard, Secretary - Gloria, Treasurer - Shirley, and Student Council Representative - Doug. Mrs. York. was again our class advisor. ' This year Mr. Anger, our World History and 8th grade teacher, and also our coach, left us. Miss Elrick also left us. Mr. Blanchard took Mr. Anger's place and Mrs. Yahkub took Miss Elrick's place. We had a wonderful time initiating the Freshmen, which brought back mem- ories of our own initiation. Again most of us were in Chorus, and band. Shirley, Doug, Graydon, and Howard went out for basketball, and Gloria started her second year of cheering. We enjoyed putting on Twelve O'Clock Murder, with most of the class participating, and Mrs. York doing a fine job of directing us again. We entered our Junior year with only nine students. Reggie and Howard had moved, but Billy Baumann joined us from Montpelier. We elected Gloria as our President, Douglas as our Vice President, Rita as our Secretary, Graydon our Treasurer, and Shirley as Student Council Representative. Since Mr. Blanchard did not return this year, Mr. Colby came to Plainfield to take his place. We had another new teacher, Mr. Burbank, who took Mr. Bishop's place. Mr. Brooks also left us and Mr. Gader became our music super- visor. Shirley, Billy, Graydon, and Doug went out for basketball and Gloria and Rita cheered. Most of us were again in chorus and band. Shirley, Gloria, Doug and Graydon went to All-State also. CLASS HISTORY - Continued After looking forward to our class rings, they finally arrived, and we felt very proud to be wearing them. This year we won the one-act play contest with 'The Revolt of Mother, and put it on in the District Contest. We were host for four other schools and enjoyed helping put on a supper for them. Although we didn't win it was worth all the effort. ln the spring, we put on a Junior Prom. Our theme was Hawaiian Cruise. Mr. and Mrs. Gader helped us with the decorating, for which we were very grateful. Although it took a lot of time and effort, we were very happy with the results, and we are sure everyone else was. Gloria and Doug were chosen as Representatives to Girls' and Boys' State. The fall of 1958 soon rolled around and at last we took the honored seats by the windows as dignified Seniors. We elected Class Officers as follows: President, Doug: Vice President, Billy: Secretary, Gloriag Treasurer, Carolg Student Council, Gloria and Graydon. Graydon was elected President of the Student Council. Shirley, Gloria and Rita went out for girls' I basketball, and Billy, Doug, and Graydon were on the boys' basketball team. Gloria and Rita also cheered, Gloria being elected Captain of the cheerleaders. The boys had a very successful season this year, as they won all their games, and went on to win the S tournament, a thrilling climax to a great season. Most of us went for band and chorus again. Right now we are looking forward to our trip to New York City. We plan to take Mr. and Mrs. Ramon Spooner with us as our chaperons. We have already engaged Rev. Victor Scalise of Lowell, Mass. to be our commencement speaker. Five of us plan to go on to college. Two of the girls are working at the National Life and the rest are undecided as to what they will do in the future. Polly Conley and Dennis Maxfield did not return, but Robert Wright, who had taken his Sophomore year at Spaulding, returned to our class for his Junior year. About half the class went out for Chorus, and Irene, Bruce, Judie, Noreen and Robert Felix were in Band. Bruce B. , Charles B. , Harold W. , Judie C. , Dianna Dix, Nancy S. , and Noreen Buxton, who was also a cheerleader, went out for basketball. Robert Felix was boys ' and girls' manager and scorekeeper. This year the Juniors sold refreshments at the home games. The Juniors have sponsored a food sale and a dance, both very successfully. Elaine, Shirley, Stanley and Bruce come from the town of East Montpelier. David Wells moved into Plainfield from Milton, Vt. during the summer. The freshmen who went out for basketball were John Carty, David Wells, and Stanley Christianson. David Fowler and Bryon Griggs are on the safety patrol.
