S. is passing into eternity, and with it our joys, our sorrows, our Work, and our play. We feel a pang of regret as We look back upon the happy and care-free hours passed in P. H. S., hours that brought us knowledge, with which we are to fight for recognition, success and fame. Sorrowfully we realize we must now bid old P. H. S- adieu, knowing full well that, never a- gain will We ascend the old stone steps and enter therein as students. But, we look to the future with a smile. We aim to go out into life and give to the world the best that is in us. And we owe P. H. S. a great debt. It was there that we labored in order to prepare ourselves for the future tasks that shall be ours. P. H. S. has given us a helping hand toward the 'drst of the many steps that are to come, in our upward race to the one great goal--Success! During our four years in high-school, we have accomplished much. Therefore, we think We do justice to the school, the community, and ourselves, when we leave behind us as a rememberance of our achievements, our class annual: The Van Buren Elm. We hope The Van Buren Elm wherein the history our high-school life is recorded, will serve as an inspiration to better and higher things to all interested in the welfare of P. H. Millie Ham ' wen Wm High above us, stately, tall, With a pow'r to overwhelm And a dignity serene Sweeps the old Van Buren Elm. In its boughs the oriole Swings its nest and carols free And the golden sun dips down To illumine the old tree. Softly as a distant chime Sweet and clear it murmurs low And its silvery accents swell With the tales of long ago! O, in mellow tones it sings Of vast forests far and near Of the Indian warriors bold And the Heavens blue and clear! And it chants of '42 When it gained the name so fair Of the Old Van Buren Elm, From the man o'erthrown there. Of the village old it tells And the town we know today Of the happy lover's life And the child ren's carols gay. Of the jolly girls and boys With their mirth and happy song Trudging on their Way to school In an idle care free throng. So it ever whispers low Of lair life that it has known And reveals its inmost thoughts To grave wanclerlr there alone. Dear old land mark, graceful elm! Harborer of memories! We respect its strength and might And we deem it king of trees!
