THE I-IERMIAD It gets tiresome Just to do nothing but sit back and talk to the horses or Qing or watch the scenery go by Unexpectedly the horses gave a start perked their ears straight up and lifted their nostrils to sniff the air Brushing dS1d6 the coffee and sandwich I Jumped to the edge of my seat and grabbed the reins and whip looking around it the same time Nothing could be seen What could have dis turbed them' After 1 while they calmed down and we resumed our Journey I was trvmg to thmk what could have happened Probably one of them made a misstep or something and the other got startled But etill I had my euspicions I snapped the reins and made Tuima and Iolle fro a little taster I wasn t quite certain what it was that startled them but Just to make sure I made them go taster Suddenly the horses reared on their hind leg a it hey had hit an lnyrsible wall They did all sorts of snorting md shaking their head in the air I knew for sure then that something was up I took a new grip on the reins and whip and looked from side to side while my heart was thumping madly Then I looked oyer my shoulder and there, in the darknese my eye became fixed with horror tor behind me lurked the dread of inlmals and dreds ot tiery red eye w itching me My heart Jumped to my throat Wolxes -X pack ot them md not yery tar oil' I stood up on the dashboard and cracked the whip oyer the horses heads to urge them to a full run -X funny tingling sensitron ran through my blood eyery time I looked oxer my shoulder so that I thought tor sure Id lose all my strength There coming nearer and nearer eyery second ' could see their 11201 harp white tangs gleaming like polished diamonds I urged the horses on The cold mormng au bit into my cheeck it someone w eie ticking needles into them The leider ot tne pack x as now behind th horses hi rd rnkle I con stantly nrpped the whip into the face of the wolf, trying, to scale it oil It was no u e The prick kept on coming but lor hope I lept on napping the wnip into their iaces I don t know what it Wqs perhrps it was luck but 1 I wa trying to scare them oil' by cr icking the whip IH iront ot them I luckily caught one in the eye The wolf llTllIl9dll.t0lX tell buck w ith many other following him 'Ihere were till 1 tew tryin, to nip the horses mkle but liter on I cared them oll or perh xp they got exhtu ted I kept on goin it tu pee or xt lea t 1 few kilometer still looking behind me then I lowed th hon es down becru c we were now only one or two kilometer trom the city and atety John L11 imaa 1044 9 S . . . THE HERMIAD The House SAW the house only once I was about five at the tlme We were re turning from a trip, I have forgotten cxactly where Twilight had fallen and dark night was fast approaching We had driven up a long hill and when we reached the top thele at the right of us standlng open to all the winds and gales that blew, unprotected by any tree or shrub, stood the house It looked I can t explain but I can remember mother shud deung and saying I could never I1Ve there I haxe never forgotten It and the feeling of horror that I felt still remains with me and even now I have the same dream as I did that night that I d dream oi the house It IS a strange dream I am alone ln the house, in the upper hall Some force seems to be behind me, pushing me out of the house Down the stairs I go and as I am pushed along I meet people haggard, sad and ghostly looking and they are telling me to hurry to leave the house before it IS too late All the time the force IS behlnd me pushing me toward the t ont door and when I get there I can t open lt and the force pushes me agalnst lt and smothers me and I finally awake, struggling desperatelv to open the door Anonymous 1944 My Trip To Chicago ACH Year vural 4 H boys and girls from all over the United States IGCCIXQ an all expense trip to Chicago to take part 1n the National 4 H Club Congress These trlps are financed by leadlng manufac tllflllg companles such as Sears Roebuck Montgomery Ward and Kerr Glass These lnterested groups not only finance the trips but offer scholarships and prizes to the national wlnners This V631 I w as one of the lucky girls from Connectlcut to be able to attend the Congress As I was chosen for my canning progect my trip was financed by the Ixerr Glass Company The day after Thanksglvlng I met the Connecticut delegation at Hart fold and the New England delegatlon at Springfield We spent that night in Bulllalo at the Worth Hotel The next day we vlslted Nlagara Falls and Welland Canada We boarded a train at Welland for Detroit where we found sleeplng accommodations on a tram for Chicago We guru ed in the Wlndy City early Sunday morning and checked in at the Sherman Hotel Other delegates stayed at the I-Iarrlson and the La Salle A few of us went to the Central Church, a non sectarian church, where sneclal sernces w ere being held for 4 H members That night all the delegates attended the Sunday evening Club The ensuing week was a hectic one The leading manufacturing organ I0 A lllllllwl N' lm' N' ' llI l'llllllIllHllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillillllllllllllllllllllllllllllhllllrlllll ' ' ' I ' I ' ' El' 1 A ' l v ' .
