Zeigler, then repre- senting the Gilmer property caused a very attractive school house to be built on top of the hill. This building was named the Pioneer High School. This school was completed in December of 1888, the cornerstone having been previ- ously laid by the Masonic order of Plain Dealing. The school opened the following spring with an attendance of 14 pupils. In 1907 four rooms were annexed to the little one room school, since the enrollment was increasing rapidly. Mr. Staples, an assistant teacher, in 1911 organized a girls' basketball team . In 1920 a new brick building was started and completed in time for the graduation exercises for the class of 1921. On February 16, 1963, the high school building burned as a result of defective wir- ing. A new high school was begun in the fall of 1963. The new building was completed in August, 1964, in time to be occupied for the fall term . During the summer months of 1964 demo- lition of the oldest building on the campus Cbuilt in 19203 took place, and a new ele- mentary building was erected during the fall and winter months of 1964-65 , ready for the 1965-66 season. 7
