Gilmer and James Blair Gilmer purchased a vast area of land from the U.S. Gov- ernment and established a plantation in what is now North Bossier Parish. Because of their belief in fair, honest deal- ings with their own employees and all others, they gave the plantation the name Plain Dealing. The owners decided to establish a town on the new rail- road which was being built through the areag conse- quently, on July 25, 1888, a public sale of lots was held and the village of Guernshine was born. The name was soon changed to Plain Dealing. During June of 1890, the citizens adopted a charter incorporating an area two miles square. The charter was amended by a vote of 17 for and none against changing the size to lui miles square during August, 1890. In 1927 the village of Plain Dealing advanced to the status of a town. The economy of the town was for many years based upon agriculture with family farms lining every road leading into Plain Dealing. Changing times led to a cattle and forestry economy. These are now supplemented by manu- facturing jobs in surrounding towns . 6 . Zeigler, then repre- senting the Gilmer property caused a very attractive school house to be built on top of the hill. This building was named the Pioneer High School. This school was completed in December of 1888, the cornerstone having been previ- ously laid by the Masonic order of Plain Dealing. The school opened the following spring with an attendance of 14 pupils. In 1907 four rooms were annexed to the little one room school, since the enrollment was increasing rapidly. Mr. Staples, an assistant teacher, in 1911 organized a girls' basketball team . In 1920 a new brick building was started and completed in time for the graduation exercises for the class of 1921. On February 16, 1963, the high school building burned as a result of defective wir- ing. A new high school was begun in the fall of 1963. The new building was completed in August, 1964, in time to be occupied for the fall term . During the summer months of 1964 demo- lition of the oldest building on the campus Cbuilt in 19203 took place, and a new ele- mentary building was erected during the fall and winter months of 1964-65 , ready for the 1965-66 season. 7 The sights and sounds of 1976 are silent, but the thrills and excitements will live on forever. 9 LQ- 4 9 2 3 2 fi L. ig ig: Q 9 x s I I prefer to believe that each year of life grows better than that which has preceded it. The members of the staff received national acclaim through publications that were printed throughout the United States. P.D.H.S. was published in the interna- tional publication, THE QUILL AND SCROLL. The club has also sponsored the induction of twelve students into the honorary organiza- tion, The Quill and Scroll. Many Lion's Talers aided in sending articles to over thirty newspapers throughout the Ark-La-Tex. Loretta Moore and Gayla McKenzie were awarded spe- cial honors for their outstand- ing achievement in the field of journalism. Gayla is now a member of the Shreveport Journal writing staff as fruits of the year's efforts . The second annual publica- tion banquet was an appropri- ate ending for a successful year of journalism. AuRoarer Staff Putting out a quality year- book is not an easy task, but the 1976 AuRoarer staff has done its best to work together and produce your yearbook. The yearbook staff has worked hard selling ads and candy so that the cost of the yearbook is not passed on to you. The number of pages has been increased yet the price has remained the same. With your help the yearbook staff can continue to make your yearbook bigger and bet- ter. Thank you students and staff. They taught lessons to students in the 5th and 6th grades at the ele- mentary school. Their program, with the help of Darryle Barksdale, advisor, and Annette Lee, sponsor, was a great success . Stuff ent Council The student council at P. D .H .S . was extremely active this year. They earned funds by conducting the Friday noon Jam Sessions. The money was used to purchase six cement benches for the campus in addition to the new United States and Louisiana flags for the flag pole in front of the school. They provided a new flag staff for the auditorium , also . During the year the members served well as spokesmen for the student body to the principal. The Junior High Literature Club got off to a good start at the beginning of the 1975-'76 school year. During that trme they have published four magazines and have taken a trip to the theater to see a movie. For the first year of organrza tion, they have made much progress. First, the students passed through the eerie halls of the Jaycee Haunted House. Then, when they entered the Carnival, a Paper Staff photographer might have Snap- ped their picture in the mouth of JAWS. If anyone wanted to see how good a basketball player he was, the Basketball Girls supplied everything he needed. If he just wanted to jump around, the Cheerleaders sponsored a trampoline. The Annual Staff and the FHA supplied something for all to eat. We all went home full and happy from a night at the carnival. 59 High School Beauties Left to Right: Miss Debra Clay, 4th runner-up, Miss Melodie Allen, 3rd runner-up, Miss Angie Cox, Miss Sharon Wyrick, lst runner-up, Miss Gayla McKenzie, 2nd runner-up. Lions Kept Spirit The 1975-76 season of the Plain Dealing High School fighting Lions was very disap- pointing mainly because of the fact that the Lions moved up to Class AA . The Lions com- peted against very stiff competition and ended the year with a 2-7 season. Many coaches throughout the district had praise for the team as being gutsy and sticking in there. One important highlight of the season was the fighting spirit of the Lions as they almost pulled off an upset victory over District Champ Haynesville. The Golden Tornadoes finally nudged by the Lions by a score of 14-6. All in all, the Lions should be proud of their first season in District 1-AA.
