JANET GREGORY AND HARRIET MURRAY The Spirit of Placer —came from the beauty-clad energy of its yell leaders, Janet Gregory, Pat Harjis, and Betty Gietzen during the first semester, and from Janet Gregory and Harriet Murray, pictured above, during the second semester. The Invasion — came when the high schools of this area visited the Placer College gym to display their basketball prowess. At the beginning of the second semester President Don Bosworth nominated Nick Chones as chairman of the 4th Annual Basketball Tournament, which was held on Febru- ary 23. In the past this tournament has been conducted by the Block P of Placer Union High School. This year, at the request of the coach, Kendall Arnett, it was sponsored by the college. The following committee was chosen by Bosworth and worked hard to make their first tournament a huge success: Nick Chones, chairman; June Hellewell, secretary; Joe Tappero, Sylvia Hast- ier, Fred Steinhauff, Bob Bonner. As the final whistle blew at the end of the championship game the score was Roseville 50 and Grass Valley 39. Placer High School took the consolation prize with 27 points over El Dorado County High ' s 17. Chris Georgis was voted the most outstanding player of the day. All three winners received trophies. A dance was held following the final game in which Lorraine Drickes from Roseville was crowned Tourna- ment Queen for 1946. Back row, left to right; June Heilewel Don Bosworth, Sylvia Hastier. Placer CollGge Spartans, — with Kendall Arnett as their coach, stepped into big and tough competition when they entered the Northern California Junior College conference. They tangled with such teams as the Sacramento Panthers, one of the best quintets that Sacramento College ever put on the hardwood. They met the powerful Modesto Pirates, the San Francisco Rams, and other teams that had far more material than did the Spartan quintet. The Spartans ended the season with 4 wins and 9 loses. Below are pictured (clockwise from upper right) Jim Neves, Al Silvas, Dick Gailbreath, Dick Bethell, Jerome Barieau. Clifford Swesey, Fiichard Peek, Russell Read, Steve Martin, and Nick Chones. Coach Ar- nett is pictured at the upper left.
