Thinkest thou existence doth depend on time? It doth; but actions are our epochs. — Byron. Although all time is measured in minutes and hours, certain minutes are more important than certain years, both to the individual and to civilization. Let us apply this principle to the development of human being. Perhaps not a dozen times in the life of each person there occurs a crisis, a turning point, when important decisions must be made. These occasions are vital and may affect the entire future of the person involved. Often the decisions are extremely difficult to make and require a background of knowledge and training as well as a modicum of courage and daring. The remark of a famous eye surgeon, in answer to the protest of a wealthy patient to what he considered to be an excessive charge for an intricate but short operation illustrates the point. Sir, he said, two thousand dollars may seem to you to be out of reason for a twenty minute operation, but I have studied and practiced thirty years in perfecting this technique. A lifetime of training, successes, and failures are behind each motion. Lincoln recognized this truth when he said, I will study and prepare myself and some day my chance will come! With the ending of the war, the school year 1945-1946 has been a year of decision for a great many people. Its culmination this June will necessitate extremely important decisions on the part of Placer graduates. Many of them will choose to continue their preparation in other institutions of learning so they ma be better prepared for future exigencies. We are certain that the training and discipline received at Placer will not only make it possible for its students to do better the things they do in their daily lives but to meet with more courage and confidence those mighty moments of resolution and decision that determine human failure or success.
