Martha. Aubrey Jenni will forever treasure the basis of a true friendship. Together In Perfect Harmony By Martha Grijalva There are several things in life which come natural- ly and to the Pius X family, that quality is together- ness . In whatever we do a special spirit is spread. In our everyday activities we stress the importance of working as a whole to accomplish a project or job. Everyone has special talents that others don ' t have; that is why it is important for us to share our talents with others so that they can be put together to solve problems which may appear in certain situations. There are other things that are involved in working together with someone and it ' s a very important skill, and that is to respect each other ' s ideas, for everyone deserves the right to learn to understand that creating something takes time, patience and also love. But why love? Well, love is an essential part of building: just the way love grows so does the project, and before you know it, it ' s accomplished. Togetherness, as I said be- fore, reminds me of Pius for we are always working hard to satisfy each other ' s needs. Father Milbauer has passed on a tremendous sense of togetherness in these past two years that he ' s been principal. He ' s spread his friendship to all the students, through a warm smile that he is constantly wearing, as he wanders through the campus throughout the day. He has even spread his cheer in the faculty, since his wonderful arrival, the faculty seems to be more relaxed, which makes it easier for them to work to- gether in conjunction with one another, not to mention with the students. We will forever remember his high spirit. The Seniors tend to hold a very special type of to- getherness within their class. A major part of this could be Senior Square; it ' s an honor to be able to own such a space, it ' s not only a space for the seniors to lay around and gossip, but it ' s a special place that has been selected, and blessed, for the seniors to think of their future. The future holds many surprises, and hopefully all the seniors respect the honor senior square gives them. Senior Square to the Seniors creates a sense of togetherness among them even though there are dif- ferent types of people. They all stick up for one an- others benefits. The best part of Senior Square is hav- ing to wait for it, and when the time comes, it ' s even better. Another example of togetherness could be this year ' s football team: even though we lost several times, they all learned to deal with each other ' s thoughts and feelings they respected themselves. The Red Berets this year were always in constant together- ness and It showed every time they walked out on that field together. We are Pius and we ' ll never let our togetherness be gone; either because of a loss or a failure. cannot tell a lie Coach Totten did it! Danny Martin, a graduating Sen- ior from Pius X is considering Loy- ola Marymount University or Uni- versity of the Pacific for further education in hopes of obtaining a re- warding career. Through participat- ing m football, as starting left guard, no. 66. Danny has gained more pride in his school. Although the season was not very successful, Danny said that it taught him a lot about life and himself. Besides his parents, Danny would like to thank Coach La Vigne, who has influenced his life greatly. Pius X has given Danny a memo- rable Senior year which he will not forget and he states, My years at Pius X have been a rewarding ex- perience, and I am proud of my Alma Mater. Lisa Manous, a graduating Senior from Pius plans to attend UCLA and major in commercial graphic arts. At the end of her senior year, Lisa has learned enough for her to be able to leave Pius X with a definite goal in life and has the ability to pur- sue it. Pius X has been a place where Lisa has been able to mature and un- derstand more about responsibility through her being Song Captain and ASB Secretary. She has taught her- self that she must set goals and work hard to obtain them. Lisa would like to thank her friends, especially Chantel Bigelow, for helping her find the true mean- ing of friendship: consideration, hon- esty and love. When asked what Piux has meant to her, Lisa replied, Pius X has been a growing experience for me through friendship, personal exper- ience and in understanding those around me. This is the reason why she came back to Pius to teach. She wanted to bring back a little of what Pius had given her. Being the Head of Counseling she finds she has a better chance to get to know the students. Mrs. Ko- courek finds her jobs are satisfying and rewarding. She feels that the school has undergone many changes since she roamed the halls of Pius as a student. She states that the rules were alot stricter then, for example, girls and boys did not have classes together and there was NO talking in the hallways. When asked how she feels about being one of the bu- siest people on our campus. She said. I enjoy the work but it can become hectic at times. Mr. Murphy has been an active member of the Pius X family for the past four years. He hopes more kids from the com- munity start to take advantage of what Pius has to offer. As head basketball coach, he finds this season to be lough but an exciting challenge. He feels the stu- dents have been supportive, even though the team has struggled, he expects his players to try their best and maintain a college prep GPA. He also expects the athletic program to represent the school community in the true spirit of the school philosophy. When on the court he feels great, he says that he can ' t believe he actually gels paid for leaching and work- ing with young people. Mr. Murphy says that through his coaching experience, he has learned to be more patient and to have a great appreciation for the aca- demic responsibilities of both the coach and the player. The spirit stick was awarded to the junior class and for two years in a row the class of 85 won the spirit tro- phy. In the famed O ' Connor ' s Gym on ihe campus of Pius X. the class of 1986. received their school ring, which is a precious symbol of honor between the student ' s and their school. The presentation of the nngs was given in a ceremony held dur- ing 4th period on December 7. 1984. The celebration was a joyous occas- sion for not only the Juniors but their proud parents. The giving of the rings was celebrated by Princi- pal FY. Milbauer. who blessed the nngs. Fr. Campion gave a short talk about the history and the meaning of the giving and the taking of school ring. He gave insight to what that relationship is to the individual student. After the ceremony the Sophomore Class gave out refresh- ments to all that came to the cere- mony. Miss Rita Dever was chosen to be the Lay Campus Minister because of her heavy involve- ment in the area of Christian Service ' From the time Miss Dever was hired as a rehgion teacher here at Pius, she has organized several of our Christian Service activities. These activities were set up for the students of this school to help the surrounding communities. The Retreat Program is one of her major goals for the year of 84 85. Due to the difficulties of three years ago it had been suspended. Miss Dever started the year out with having one day retreats of the each section of the Freshmen Re- ligion Classes. It took place in our large group room and was taught through a film, discussion prayer and a Mass. The Sophomore Retreat was a one day retreat awav from the school It was given by the Salesians. The Junior.Senior Re- treat will be three days during the month of March at Valyermo. Another one of Miss Dever ' s goals is for the students here at Pius to attend Youth Dav which IS a workshop just for High School Students This Youth Day is held in conjunction with the CCD Congress in January. The dav will be filled with workshops, a liturgy, and a concert. Miss Dever has worked very hard to make the Thanksgiving and Christmas Season one of hope for others bv raising enough money, food and toys for the poor. We are very proud, here at Pius, to have Miss Dever as a Shining example of the true meaning of being a Christian. One of the most involved persons m Christian services at Pius is Rev- erend Campion Aspinall. a.k.a. Fr. Campion. He has been a priest for the past 24 years and has been at Pius X for quite sometime. His offi- cial title IS Administrator of Reli- gious affairs. With this job Father is in charge of masses before school, for classes and for student body. Penance Services and the religious department. In addition to this busy .schedule, the English fellow finds the time to involve himself into the different Christian Drives at the school. Father feels much pride for the Pius Community for doing the excellent jobs on the drives this year. Thanksgiving Mass The Thanksgiving masses were held on November 21, 1984 and ihey turned out to be a success. The students at Pius pulled together to raise enough money to buy 600 dollars worth of turkeys, 250 dollars worth of extra food and 1,000 dollars to be sent to Ethipia for aid. During the masses, the Drama Department performed a short play, The Giving Tree , which is a skit based on the nature of giving. Also attending the mass was the Sarton Chorus who sung. Much thanks is given to the students at Pius for their generous contributions towards the success of the drive. s In prayerfull concenlraiion Father Milbauer asks, the students to join in prayer What do I do now? Christinas Toy Drive Miss Dever ' s Class Tree, donated by her Juniors. Surprise! Here are Santa ' s little helpers. The Christmas Toy Drive was a great suc- cess!!! Miss Dever and Fr. Campion with the help of the student body here at Pius raised $1,203,56. This money went to supply needy children with toys and special gifts for Christ- mas. As a Christian Community. Pius united to make the holiday a special place for those in need. The students here at Pius should be proud that they were able to bring happiness and ]oy into a small child ' s life. The drama class gave us an interpretation of what the true meanmg to Christmas is. This was done through a dramatic performance given during the homily. Retreat: Frosh Soph The retreat program at Pius had not been in operation for the past two years. This year under the guidance of Miss Rita Dever and the Religion department we again have a retreat program- The program this year is not only for Seniors but for the underclassmen too. This past November the Fresh- men were given a day through their Religion class to exper lence a day to religious enlightment. This was followed by a Mass dunng a regular class penod. The Sophomores were given the opportunity to experience a different setting for their retreat, which was given at Dominic Savio. The Sopho- more Retreat was a one day experience for everyone in the class who wished to participate in the new and exciting en- nchment of religious awareness. She has been on J.V. Volleyball and Basket- ball for 2 years, and on Varsity Vol- leyball 1 year and Varsity Basket- ball 2 years. When I asked Doreen what being a senior meant to her she replied To me a senior means being on top and in control. Doreen is un- decided about college but plans on going to the police academy to be- come a police officer. I asked her Why a police officer? She replied Because it is a challenge and a chance for me to be independent. In Doreen ' s own words she said Pius has given me a chance to experience new things and to discover myself to the fullest potential. One of the most enthusiastic and sports orientated guys on campus is Senior. Tony Conrado. He has played Varsity Football for the past 2 years and was honored with a Red Beret for being named Varsity Foot- ball Captain. He feels a sense of ac- complishment in his final year at Pius, he is looked up to by his fellow- team mates and underclassmen. Some of the valuable things that Pius has given Tony is leadership qualities, ability to deal with others and a sense of responsibility to ac- cept victory and defeat. Tony hopes to join the Marine Corp following graduation. When asked what Pius X has meant to him. Tony replied. It has been my second home! Varsity Football: True Warriors t . _. ff,, h MM 7 f :3 ;flr; .:3 ,29 The 1984 football season saw the War- ners expenence both frustration and ex- citement. Pius X lost some close games but had some outstanding performance by individuals on the varsity team. The Warriors led the entire Southeast area m passing with 1677 yards at a 63% com- pletion rate, setting school juniors, were selected to the All-Angelus League team. This was more underclassmen all- league performers than any other team in the league. All in all. the Pius X Warriors exper- ienced a season filled with emotion, de- termination and dedication to a purpose. The players always gave 100% effort and played as a team. These parents are extremely important lo our school ' s effort to raise money lo support our teams. Whether we win or lose, they are here to help- In any school, the key to a suc- cessful athletic program is its link to educauon and parent support Pius is no different, we are a small school with a limited budget and without the Booster Parents, we would have a difficult time being both an excellent academic and athletic school we are now. She has a strong influence on people, she takes the time to listen and try to understand a particular situation. Many people don ' t know Miss Gibbons as well as I do; I have been with her since my Freshman year, and we could say that I was a warm welcome to her! I believe in her more than I have in anyone else in my entire life, and God knows how much she means to me. I knew that this book was going to be a great success. To be honest though. I was worried that I wasn ' t going to be able to express my thoughts clearly, because we both like to do things our way; sure enough, we were willing to compromise and come up with even better ideas. We worked as a team, and we fought till the end, and we came out winning!! Miss Gibbons has put more heart and soul into this yearbook than anyone. She came into our class without a clue about what to do and what we were talking about. 3R Planner? , she was puzzled. In less than weeks she was using our terms correctly and putting them into use. She asked more questions than anyone, she wanted to know everything: soon enough she was doing things on her own. When she didn ' t like something she would work with it and develop new designs, combine everyone ' s thoughts and ideas and come up with something original. It was a very difficult year but Miss Gibbons remained on top of things, pushed and pushed everyone and didn ' t stop until she was satisfied. She deserves this dedication for being the most understanding person that I know. Miss Gibbons, well it is finally over, at least this year is!! I really am glad that we had the opportunity to work._ together this last year of mine. It was more than a pleasure. Remember always that you are my inspira- tion!! Keep up with all the good work, and most of ALL GOOD LUCK next year and if you need me you know where I will be With Special Thoughts Martha Grijalva (Editor) Ml Mk ] t i m JUEGOS OE COMEOOn - SAUAS - RECAMARAS MESAS DE CENTRO - LITERAS iMiiEi;i,i;s i)K 0 ( ii)i:nte FURN ITLiHE FERMIN M. This is one of the greatest achievements for Pius basketball team, since it has been over 14 years since we ' d even come clos e to playing in the playoffs. Its been a long hard road to this achievement- In looking back over the past four years, we can see the preparation that was taking place for this bright shinning moment. It all seem so strange now but when it all started the people and the players thought the Coach was CRAZY, Us?!!! Pius, in the CIF Playoffs ' ' ] ' ' !! But in the beginning, that is just what Coach Murphy was looking at. to be GIF Champions in the sport event of Basketball, to make Pius X a power on the Court, to have the other schools realize that Pius was going to become 1 and stay there. We have done just that! We have just accomplished that first step to be CIF Champions. When Mr, Murphy first came back to these great hall of Pius, he began his long journey on that road to the CIF Playoffs. Pius wasO-IO and there were only a few loyal fans who came to see the team play. This year alone Pius has achieved a lot. We. now have a record of 8-2 for the regular league season, only losing to Mater Dei. The fans have grown from just those few loyal fans to a sellout crowd for the Feb. 8th game against Mater Dei. here at the home of the Warriors. We. here at Pius, are PROUD of our 1 Coach of the year and his 1 team. None of this would have been possible without Mr. Murphy ' s experienced coaching staff: Varsity Defensive Coach Deon Evans. JV Coach Robert Orellana. Sophomore Coaches Gene Hamilton and Rick Lamprecht, Freshmen Coaches Mike Hamilton and John Lussman. All we can say is. Thanks. Coaches! ALL RIGHT. WE ARE JAMMING NOW!! Ronald Rea- gan promised that his second term of office would be quite different from his first four years. With his extraordinary triumph over Mondaie. he confirmed the prediction of a iandslide . This landslide victory became a political Coup for his long political career. With a firm pledge of support from the vot- ers. President Reagan could now take more pursive action and be more aggressive dur- ing his second term. He was quoted that night to say. Tonight ' s the end of nothing and the beginning of everything. This very thought was the expression of 3.000 lubilani campaign workers and Californian Republi- cans that had worked hard for this massive victory. President Reagan ' s victory celebra- tion was held at the Century City Plaza Ho- tel where he. told the people what his goals would be for the ne. t four years: 1) to over- Haul the tax laws. 2) to shrink the federal deficit. 3) to rebuild U.S. defenses, 4) to jchieve a U.S. - Soviet Arms Pact, and 5) to contain Central American Communism. Baby Fae ' S Memories In the fall of 1984, a Learn of medical re- searchers received the interest of the world when they iransplanted the heart of a healthy baboon into a two-week old infant girl for her last chance at survival. The traijsplant occurred a generation after the first efforts at such cross-.- pecics procedures met wilh limited success; without her knowledge, this small child became part of an historical event. The operation, v hich was the placing of a young, adull female baboon heart into a tmall human infant girl, has set off a series of debates. The rosearcVi team has been given praise as well as criticism for their decision to prolong the life of this one small child. These dehates brought defenders of both man and beast to the press. Questions were being asked: Were we violating animals ' rights, or perhaps challenging the particu- larity of human ' animal relationshii)? Had proper procedures been followed ' scientific preparation, institutional review, the in- forming of the parents and the securing of their consent? Was there reasonable chance of the child ' s survival, or was the transplant seen from the beginning as an experiment from which others could benefit ' Unfortunaiely, two v oeks after this his- toric operation took place and the infant ' s surgeons had sewn in the baboon ' s heart. Baby Pae began to show .signs of rejection. The child fought for her life, but her body began to work against her and this new alien organ The infant ' s immune system was at- tacking the heart that was keeping her alive. Her doctors fought very hard to keep her alive by giving her new drugs for organ re- jection. The di ' ugs the doctors were using started to bring about kidney failure. Her kidneys were no-longer able to cleanse her blood, causing her kidneys and heart to fail. Baby Fae had lived 21 days after the historic operation that had been an attempt to pro- long her life. The research team ' hat performed the op- eration was headed by Dr. Leonard Bailey, head of Cardiology at Lcma Linda Universi- ty Medical Center in San Bernardino. Cali- fornia. Baby Fae was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a gross underdevelop- ment of the heart ' s m.ain pumping chamber, the left ventricle. Under the right circum. ' ?tances and with ihe right type of organ, animal grafts might one day bo useful Just becau.se this was the firs! doesn ' t mean that it was unwarranted, or necessarily the best or the last. Dr. Bailey and his staff were shaken by the news of Baby Fae ' s death, for they had worked around the clock to save her. There are still questions to be answered about the issue of organ rejection, the effects of cyclosporjne on developing blood sys- tems, whether an animal heart can grow tc sustain an adult human and whether accu- rate tissue typing can be worked out for non human primates Eaitey and his team believe that the lessons learned from Baby Fae will pave the way to future cross-species trans- plant, and he is convinced that they will be able to diagnose the organ rejection earlier Fae will live on in our hearts and memories forever . ' Indira Gandhi Dead India ' s fate as the world ' s most populous democracy hangs in the balance in the after- math of the assassination of its Prime Mini.s- ter, Indira Gandhi. On her way to the interview she was approached by two men no more than seven feet away from her. Brant Singi) drew a ,38 revolver ?ind fired three shots into her abdomen. She fell to the ground. There were at least .seven bullets that penetrated her abdomen, three pentrating her ches ' . and one shoi in the heart. The Prime Minister was dead! The two Sikhs dropped their guns and surrendered to the authorities. With this tlie security guards seized both of them and took Ihem to the guard house. On the way to the guard house, Beant lunged for one of the guard ' s guns. Another guard opened fire, killing Beant instan ' ly, leavmg Satawani wounded. Indira Gandhi, the night before her tragic death, was talking to a largo crowd in Ons- sa ' s capital city of Bhubanesv ar. She is quoted as saying. 1 am not interested in a long life. I am not afraid of things. I don ' t mind if my life goes in the service of this nation ' The facts stand true. Indira Gandhi was a proud, stubborn, courageous woman who hated to wear the protective bullet proof vest. She died as she had lived giving service lo her country
