To thee we sing, Alma Mater, Alma Mater, dear With thee shared our ioys, shared our tears. To thee we pledge our loyalty, Our hearts so true to thy loved memory. O Pius X, in your steps we strive to follow Through the paths of life's own morrow. Our dear Alma Mater still will stand To guide the way Though others may stray, Pius X show us the way. His Eminence, JAMES FRANCIS CARDINAL MCINTYRE, DD., LID. Archbishop of Los Angeles To the Graduates of PIUS X HIGH SCHOOL My dear Graduates: As the graduates of Pius X High School will soon again register their impressions on higher education, the business world, or home life, we extend to them our heartfelt and sincere con- gratulations. It is our prayer that God's blessings will be most bountiful upon them, and that the treasury of graces that has come to them at the inspiration of their teachers, will ever fruitfully grow. The fast growth of the school, the quick spread of its buildings, the phenomenal success of its graduates have swelled the breasts of all who have participated in the development of Pius X. This pride is tempered by the consideration that all that has been done was the work of God, under whose guidance His Eminence, Cardinal Mclntyre, was inspired to build the largest Catholis high scho in the western Unitd States. The dedication of personnel to e goal of Saint Pius X, torestore all things in Christ, has received its greatest impetus from the blessing of our Cardinal-Archbihop, indicated in his constant fatherly guidance. We must be true to this manifest trust placed in us. We must all make Pius X High School an outstanding school in every respect, where Christlike virtues are learned to an exceptional degree,-not only learned, but practiced to such an extent that every Pius X student will personally reflect the nobility of a follower of Christ. May almighty God favor us with the grace so to do. Sincerely your friend, Father Joseph F. Sharpe 0ur faculty Iraq proven themselves,- W C it 4 it ,M N e Reverend ANICETO AMll.- Sister ANNEMARIE, O. With some fear and trepi- dation, and with great anticipation this class began its high school life. With high hopes for suc- cess in scholastic learning, recognition in the field of sports, and achievement in striving to live together as a group, this class has united and has proven that group cooperation is the best way to advance and to achieve its goal. To the class of '58 comes the climax of four years of struggles and aspirations - graduation! Reminiscences of the past bring forth many delightful memories, and make us feel that we can be iustly proud of our achievements, Before we write finis , the Class of '58 finds the record incomplete without some mention of the inspiration and guiding companionship of our Principal, Father Sharpe, and of our fine faculty to whom the class owes much for their kindly interest and encouragement. Because of such ideal contacts, we hope to be, as a class, a little better, and as individuals, a little finer. If we have accomplished this our aim has been fulfilled, if we have accomplished our aim, we are content. PATRICIA ADELMAN Our Lady of Victory Parish7 Sodality I-47 G. A. X WI TOM ORTIZ President PAT MA RCHAND Secretary-Treasurer J U N I O R S As with so many things, :vang p olten harder than one anticipated. So it is with the Junior Class. Living up to the example set before them by the Class of '58 and matching, at least in a small way, their successful record was not easy. They were not pertect nor did they possess the Midas touch that seemed to overshadow every Senior endeavor. Although they were thought to be a social-minded class, the Juniors, by sweat and hard work, have given Pius X a chance to raise her head in the Catholic Leagues and has given her a button poppin' opportunity to take pride in the many awards and honors that they have brought home to their Alma Mater. The Junior Class has proven itself to be intensely human: disagreeing often, failing many times, but most important, picking up their pride again and again and learning from their mistakes by becoming more closely knit as a class. NELSON MURPHY President BEVERLY CONNELL Vice-President We the sophomore class are DENIS TE'-I-ERS proud to be a part of the stu- 5ec'e Y'T'e s 'e dent body of Pius X. In the past year many a sophomore has played an important role in the everyday drama of school life, both in the classroom and on the athletic field. However, we feel that this contribution is hardly worthy of note in contrast to the priceless gift we have received. Our principal has inspired us, our faculty has guided us, and the student body has made us aware of our responsibility of be- coming intelligent Catholic men and women. We feel that in this year many fac- tors which go into school life have converged upon us and left a definite impression upon us. lt is this impression, this priceless gift that we would like to acknowledge. Its value is iudged not by an individual, not by a class, but by a school dedicated To restore all things in Christ. Sophomore Homeroom Officers-Top row l to r: T. Young, A Verd un, M. Maynun, D. How surprisingly big the school looked and how very small and unimportant we felt in such strange surroundings. The important-looking Sophomores and the lordly Juniors bowed low when the mighty Seniors passed by. And we, as we gazed upon them, were awed by their intelligence and dignity. All too soon the year is coming to an end, but we will long remember and cherish the many memories of our freshman high school days. FRESHMEN I-IOMEROOM OFFICERS, Top Row ll to rl: R. Heroux, S. He is a man whose example of life is an ideal representation of true Catholic Action. His youthful confidence rubs off on the team and his wise experience guides their efforts. But he is not a cold, far-off source of inspiration, never fully understood by his players. On the contrary, he is a warm, vibrant, compassionate human being. He is your friend on or off the field. There isn't a thing he would not do for anyone on the team, star or sub. He is ci coach who will lower himself to ioke with his players, but on the other hand, is stern when the necessity arises. ln other words, he is all the good things that are humanly possible in a coach and we hate to see him leave. Coach Hardy was not the only source of inspiration for the team. Wally Nowicki, our line coach, is one of the most dedicated men on the Pius X coaching stafff. All fear the Nowicki paddle but all appreciate the hard work and fine example of Mr. Nowicki. Mr. Ctibor gives the band lcsl-minute pointers as they rehearse for the Christmas program. lBeIowl the Chorus await their s'gnaI to Come, All Ye Faithful. The males of the student body were privileged to attend a musical assembly at which the glee clubs of Don Bosco, Loyola and our own lpictured herel performed. ,A wif' ups- -V Till. B mmf e .e The rehearsals for the Desert Song were often tedious, but the impact of even the opening scene was reward enough for these efforts. Margot and the girls, together with the chorus, sang as this lonely Arab waited beyond the footlights for his band. The Sheik looked happy throughout the play-who wouldn't be, with such a harem? B. Frascella failed to flee the Arabs dressed as a woman, but he did succeed on the back of Mr, Big Ears, hailed as the star of the show. The unmasking of Red Shadow, followed by o resounding chorus of the Desert Song , climoxed the play with the rafters ringing applause. The End. 1 5 a , n K . fgk A 'Jum- -. si vu-. - . Twelve long years have the graduates of '58 passed through doors - doors of learning, doors of pleasure, doors of experi- ence and doors of prayer. 'Twas in i954 that these doors opened wide to welcome eager freshmen bent upon receiving a worthwhile, Catholic education. Many times since have they gone and come, always finding the doors open, always finding an opportunity to pursue the finer things religiously, cul- turally, and scholastically. The key to these doors have been held by Father Sharpe, prin- cipal, friend and director. Under his leadership the doors were labeled security. Another key, a master one, has been kept for any emergency in the competent hands of Father Cranham, the assistant principal, and that one is labeled understanding, There are other keys and other doors, each a secret entrance to the pursuit of those things that make Pius X so great, and these are guided by the faculty. On June l, 1958 the doors will close on the Class of '58 but through their crystal clearness there will always be a welcome sign and as the graduate passes by he may see within and know that behind these doors are the things wrought of God. WILLIAM FRASCELLA redit to hom redit is ue ln the year of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-eight, it became apparent to the Tiara Staff that there was a great deal of student talent and capability going generally unrecognized around this campus. So we decided to bring some of the talent out into the open where you all may share in the progress and deeds of our PIUS TENTH TEENS. We have the intellectuals with us always, thank God for them, and among them this year, we find a goodly mixture: Mr. Malley who made two years of A average in Latin, who won the Math and Science Area award from the Bank of America, who was accepted at M.I.T., who won second place in the science symposium at l.H.C., Joan Wright who has a Latin B average for four years, Martin Merlo who also has a Latin B average for four years, M. J, Zimmerman who won a scholarship to l.H.C., and who received the Social Studies and Foreign Language award from the Bank of America, B. Policy who has the Fine Arts award, J. Plambeck the Business award, B. Hansinger who receives the Vocational Arts award, J. Floeck - Mathematics, and M, Joyce the Practical Arts award, B. Frascella who received the English award, as well as placing in the Voice of Democracy and Lions Club Contests, Carmel Ruggiero who won a scholarship to l.H.C., B. Lupo who gets special mention for proficiency in the speaking and the writing of Spanish, F. Mullin who placed second in the Elks Poetry con- test, B, Pharis for her hard work with the drill team, H. Janee who placed first in the Modern Language Contest for an eight-minute speech in Latin, L. Benofy an outstanding geometrician, and R. Beingessner and C. Pankake outstanding English scholars, D. Christenson and Tracy Farwell budding literary stylists, T. Panciera and J. Granthan for outstanding work in art, K, Fromdahl and S. Brown for generous cooperation shown throughout their high school days, especially in the cafeteria, B. Hale, who has spent many hours in the production of this book. J. Quartucci, who is the general all-round athlete and yet maintains an A average. J, Janssen for her outstand- ing generosity and J. Quantrill, S. Burke, and T.
