All during rehearsals the company works and plans on a bare stage. As the rehearsals draw to a close and the first glimpse of the polished production emerges, the producer and designer see the flats slip slowly into place, the spots adiusted, the backdrop unfurled. At Pius X High School in l957, some new sets were raised against the already established backgrounds of our main build- ing, gym and cafeteria. The stands, the field house, the faculty dining room began to appear to fill out the carefully developed plan which was etched for Pius X in 1953. This is the skeleton set which anticipates our production-the culmination of four years of rehearsal. On opening night- graduation-the l68 seniors who have been with the company from freshman crew days to their final starring role, watch the curtain rise on this production, knowing that they have contributed to a presentation which will increase in success as each new company comes into the limelight to present its performance, always striving to live up to the opening night reviews: A hit! This is our stage: This bore foundation edging the shop building is soon to become a practical field house which will combine boys' lockers and showers with o separate band room and a small laboratory theatre. Although he is seldom seen, the company is aware of his presence, criticizing, applauding, but always encouraging each to display his very best. From his place beyond the footlights, the producer sets the tone of the production, continuously looking ahead past the rigor of rehearsal and the tedious training period to opening night. Never losing sight of this goal, he calmly pilots the directors and company through the production schedule. To the directors, the producer is the one to whom they can always turn when rehearsals balk or the actors seem unfit for the part. He is the unlimited source of advice that strengthens them with enthusiasm to begin their work anew . , . To the stars, the producer is the one who demands quality of performance and perfection in re- hearsals. To iustify his faith in them, they strive to live up to the high standards he has set for their starring role . . . To the rest of the company--the co-stars, supporting cast and crew-the producer is the impartial critic and the silent applause who stands apart and gives purpose and meaning to their efforts . . . The entire company-directors, players, crew-gratefully dedicates this yearbook to Father Joseph F. Sharpe, our principal, the man most wholly dedicated to our production . . . iudy grantharn '59 Vi. Archbishop of Los Angeles My dear Students of Pius X High School: The Patron of your High School personified holiness in every day actions and demonstrated the expression of St. Paul when he counselled living the truth in Charity. This holiness is the recognition of the supernatural in human actions, which are animated by grace and referred to God through Charity. As we study the life of Pius X we find these elements of supernatural grace and charity illustrated in the ordinary things of daily life, as well as the extraordinary accomplishments of his special qualities. We commend to your reading and to your example the life of this noble servant of God. Faithfully yours in Christ, J. Francis Card. Through competition, encouragement and hard work, students learn that they can turn their academic advancement into permanent and rewarding achievements. The California Scholarship Federation, or C.S.F., for which our school is chartered, offers prime motivation for high scholarship and steady extra-curricular activities. This year the over two dozen members of the C.S.F. participated in state-wide Federation sponsored contests and offered themselves as student hosts on the evening of Open House. Besides participation in this group, the students of Piux X have proved them- selves in community and county activities such as the Lions Club and Native Sons of the Golden West Contests, Betty Crocker's Future Homemakers of America and Bullock's Scholastic Art Contest. 1 'Jv- 'fi L '1- 'ff 5'- Il it isn't exactly champagne music, it certainly bubblesl That aptly describes Pius X's fine accordion band.
