The Student Council sets the standard for Christian conduct at all times. Mem- bers of the S. Library and cafeteria aids, our un- uring maintenance men, and an enthusi- astic athletic board contribute to the good order and well-being of PXHS. Miss Tumolo, Librarian, overlooks Stevann Barezynski’s work on the card files, Juanita Dunbar, Donna Sartor, John Ferrazzano, Arthur De Thomas, Filomena Di Giacamo, and Robert Dotta have found just what they were looking for. The blue and white ribbon people, our Student Council, meet with Father Loeper to discuss things pertinent to the good order of our school. September 30, October 1 and 2 were three happy and beneficial retreat days for the entire student body. : ANTES The Dialogue Mass is a joy to every Piuster’s heart. Weekly we participate in the great Sacrifice—right here “with- in these doors”; and although we may stumble over “. . . suscipe depreca- tionem” or “. . . consubstantialem Patri”, we know that God loves our humble efforts and accepts our sacrifice. Many Piusters avail themselves of the opportunity of receiving Holy Communion at our weekly Wednesday 11:10 A.M. Mass. Arthur De Thomas receives from Father Loeper. The students who are to receive Holy Communion place unconsecrated hosts into the ciborium before Mass begins. Robert Bush and Kathleen Diorio are going to receive the Holy Eucharist this morning. Mount Carmel Church, just across the street, is the scene of after-school “pop” visits and Tuesday confessions. Pamela Peifly, Arthur De Thomas, Leonard Gruppo, Barbara Trigiani, Lucille Bavaria, and Bill Ortoski prepare themselves for the Sacrament of Penance. Is of Paramount Importance 23 As the assembly sang “Silent Night”, a group of students portrayed the Christmas story in tableau. Some are traditional, like the blessing of class rings, the blessing of the Christ- mas tree, the annual retreat; others, like the various monthly projects of the Mary Help of Christians Sodality, are current. The weekly Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and reception of Holy Communion are the foundations upon which all others rest. All fulfill a need, subjectively and objectively, in that they nourish our longing for God and the things of God. What more could we ask? Collecting homework is a very important part of Father Loeper’s Senior Religion class. Frances Piergallini, Harry Kachline, and Joseph Duvo help gather the assignments. saa ES a ORE Senior chemists Tom Tepoli, John De Nadai, Richard Reto, Matt Sabatine, and Joe Ruggiero all have an able hand in the laboratory dis- tillation of water. Gathering facts for an English paper presents no difficulty for Phyllis Renaldo, Stevann Barczynski, Mary Eleanor Caracio, Carol Massi, and Lana Pritchard. Our Library has countless helps. that Studies . . . Patricia Guida explains the signs of the func- | tions of angles in the third quadrant to Albert Caporaso and Rosemarie Falcone. At last—the golden year—we’re seniors! It seems only yesterday that as freshmen we wor- ried about “puella-puellae” and the sum of 2a + 3a + 5a. Now we take Trig, Chemistry, Spanish, Stenography, etc., in our stride, wishing our high school days were just beginning so we could continue to study, to socialize, and to set bigger and better records at our beloved Pius X. It’s P.A.D. time and Domenic Martino, Patricia Greene, Barry Mack, and Gene Fusakio battle it out in a Segregated Public Education panel. Quiet — the study hall! Filomena Di Giacamo, Bill Ortoski, Philip Koslowski, and Carol Lee Kolus seem absorbed in things aca- demic. Mr. Shemanski instructs Tom Tepoli and John Ferrazzano in the use of our 16 MM projector. are Doorways Physical education is not overlooked. The senior girls, under the super- vision of Mrs. Gardner, strike an artistic pose for our cameraman. “Do my debits equal my credits?” ask Mary Sulli- van, Frances Piergallini, and Dorothy Zavacky in a Bookkeeping II class. John Sylvester, Ronald Striba, Louise Capobianco, Cynthia Zelenka, and Annette Greko stop to admire our prized portrait of Pope John XXIII, the gift of last year’s graduating class to the school, No wonder there are so many happy faces! Spanish students Veronica Ricevuto, Jennie Jo Zito, Frank Graziano, Mike Trigiani, Isidore De Thomas, Dave Fusakio, and other members of the class sing the Spanish version of “Jingle Bells”. Even instructor Mr. Melhem is amused. to a Successful Future Advanced typing students Janet Baskar, Mary Sullivan, Fred La Penna, Dorothy Zavacky, and Nick Del Gros- so aim for accuracy and speed as their nimble fingers’ run over the keyboard. “ Rosemary Valetta discusses the Cavalier poets in a Junior English class. Anthony Caracio, Donato Giaquinto, Gary Barezynski, and George Giaquinto seem very interested in h er well chosen remarks. Juniors are Mindful. . . “Can you do it another way?” Nancy Schultz asks Sharon Cotturo. Ralph De Lorenzo, Pat Finelli, Daniel Powlette, and Caroline Caporaso seek for another algebraic solution. that Classroom Application loday ... All have five fingers, and on one of those fingers is a cherished class ring. William Saganich, Veronica De Rea, Rosemarie Guida, Cecilia Cascioli, and Anthony Romano seem overjoyed that their blue and gold rings have arrived at long last. at the board while future secretaries Dorothy Martino, Joanne Sylvester, Dar- lene Rossigno, and Francine Faraldo, too, practise the “kays” and “gays” that make for rapid business dictation. b) Keeping the corridor bulletin board “live’ is no problem for Sandra Falcone, Eileen Gray, and Mary Jo De Rea. We are the “jolly juniors” whose hopes run very high. We realize we'll be the leaders of tomorrow — here at Pius X. May we live up to the splendid record set by our esteemed predecessors, the class of ’60. As juniors we had to make a big decision—College? or the business world? Having made our choice, we endeavored to maintain a good record and grasp the wonderful opportunities that were ours here at Pius X. | i ‘ 20 A Latin III translation is no hardship for Maryanne Rutkowski, nor for Michael Capobianco, Ralph Lopardo, Palmina Capobianco, and Connie Capozzolo. Anthony Liberto, Ronnie De Nadai, David Paelini, and Daniel Fiorot work diligently at their Mechanical Drawing problems. Father Loeper gives special assist- ance to Ralph De Lorenzo. Chemical reactions are of genuine interest to Maryanne Rutkowski, Judy Suprys, Joy Walter, and Caroline Caporaso. Is there an- other Madame Curie among them? Just learning —but already these junior typists seem at home with the keyboard: Sandra Falcone, Andrea Massi, Veronica De Rea, Marietta Boscaino, Carla Giovanni, and Philip Viglione. Sister Ann Bernardine observes their progress. G Connie Sullivan doesn’t lose a minute as she combines a study period with her duties as receptionist. Security Tomorrow Mr. Shemanski’s muscle-building workouts during Phys Ed Class keep the junior-senior boys in top shape. Senorita Adele Fisher conjugates a Spanish verb. Classmates Charles Capozzolo, Rita Buskirk, and Joanne Guida are wondering also. Classes in hygiene are a great help to Elizabeth Porambo, Beverly Figlioli, and Marie Powlette. In his Religion II class Father Loeper shows some of the sacred vessels to Leonard Carrescia, Bronwin Gardner, Albert Fedon, and Ronald Perin. Many Ways Jack D’Alessandro points with pride to the K. of C. trophy won by our football team. Al Giovannini, Anthony Caligiuri, Joseph Jamilkowski, and Michael Stasak are equally proud. “Don’t hold us up. We’re on our way to lunch,” heard from Anthony Zanette, Francis Romano, Thomas D. Caracio, Kathleen Vicario, Marie Pullo and John Mack. The sophomores are a happy crowd. They study together, work together, and had a particularly pleasant time planning and providing the decor for the Harvest Hop. We look for wonderful things from the class of ’62. English I is made easier with a little dramatization. Richard Fusakio, Maureen Pritchard, Carol Tucker, Marie Liberto, Benny Manasseri, and Joseph Angelini read a little skit to bring home a few points in correct usage. Freshmen . . . Pat Confalone demonstrates how to filter muddy water to interested freshmen Bill Martucci, Stephen Ferrazzano, Louis Capozzolo, James Ciliberti, Donna Carrer, and Louise Janette in Mr. Shemanski’s General Science class. Mornings find the freshmen in attendance at the stationery store. Mary Jo Zito and Lucille Liiro take care of customers Robert Dotta, Marie Liberto; and Carol Garafalo. Freshman Bill Martucci very capably explains the evaluation of an intricate formula to Algebra I students Judy Bavaria, Robert Greene, Elaine King, and Alfred Ruggiero. Something very new for the freshmen . . . Latin, Michelle Filingo, Pat Confalone, Sharon Dotta, and James Talotta put their heads together on a particularly difficult passage for translation. Came, Saw... and Have Father Loeper points out a familiar passage in the Bible to Donna Communale, Francis Bar- toli, Jamés Talotta, and Judyann Caracio. Homeward bound after a very full day, Sal- vatore Mondello, Peter Scarlese, Carolynne Bianco, and Juanita Dunbar board the bus for Pen Argyl. Our freshman sacristans prepare for weekly Mass: Mary Jo Zito, Michelle Filingo, Lucille Liiro, Carol Cascioli, Marie Liberto, and Pat Sullivan. Our school-spirited freshmen have set an enviable record for themselves during their first year at Pius. They entered into things academic, social, and spiritual with unusual zest — and their spirit has never lagged. Continue, fresh- men, and at the end of your four years at PXHS you will be able to say with Caesar, “Veni, vidi, vici.” a 2 a 4 d 4 Roseann Breda, Nick Sylvester, Nick De Rea, and Patricia Abruzzese arrive ready for a hard day and a hearty lunch, judging by those bags. Pen, Polish, Proof-Read, CLAVES means keys. Certainly THE CLAVES is the key that opens the doors to life within PXHS. In this year’s CLAVES we have tried to recapture life as we have lived it “within these doors”—our classes, activ- ities, the laughter which rings in our corridors, the prob- lems we encounter, successes as well as failures. The CLAVES staff is always willing to offer new ideas and hours of hard work to make our yearbook one we Piusters and our community can be proud of. With a great deal of pride and after much preparation our doors were open- ed wide on Sunday, February 21, and over seven hundred parents and friends came to our second annual Open House and Science Fair. There were more than a hundred student projects dealing with engineering, chemistry, biology, and general science. These were judged by science teachers from other areas, and the winners in each division represented our school in the Lehigh Valley Science Fair at Muhlenberg College April 5-8. Most of our visitors spent much of their time taking in the student scientific projects which were displayed in the auditorium. Soft music and a happy friendly atmosphere pervaded the corridors and classrooms that Sunday afternoon. This spirit was especially pre- dominant during the second encounter with P’burg Parochial. Although we lost this game in the last few seconds, the Royal spirit was enough to inspire anyone. This year Pius won a berth in the P.C.I.A.A. play- offs. We faced Bethlehem Catholic in the opening con- test and bowed to the Becahi squad. Although the record established for the season was not of great magnitude, as far as records go, it does prove one thing. The Royal basketball team is slowly building, and within the next few years should develop into a formidable five. They : 46 49 57 65 64 49 59 56 The JV basketball squad established an outstanding record during the ’59-’60 season. The sharp shooting of Albion Yesilonis and George Giaquinto together with the splendid team work of the other lads led to the enviable record of 13. wins against 4 defeats. The Junior Varsity team is only in its second year of competition; therefore, the Pius X basketeers in the seasons to come should prove a stumbling block for all oppo- nents on the court, JV SCOREBOARD Opponent Pen Argyl 35 Chestnut Hill : 20 Jim Thorpe Catholic 18 Bethlehem Catholic 51 Phillipsburg 36 High Bridge 28 P’burg Parochial ae 42 Notre Dame 62 Jim Thorpe Catholic 46 High Bridge 43 P’burg Parochial Pome 4: 40 Delaware Valley 36 Phillipsburg 42 S. Up, up, up . . . and another two points for us, Paula Mondello is with the Girls right on her toes in this spectacular game with Notre Dame. The °59-’60 girls’ basketball season was a very gratifying and successful one, although not without some defeats. The record was seven wins and five losses. Hard work on the part of our coach, Mrs. Gardner, and each member of the squad had its good effects. The team displayed greater unity, spirit, and abil- ity than ever before. Basketball season over, and the boys begin batting, pitching, and catching to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Spring was late in arriving this year, necessi- tating much indoor practice before the first game of the season. Mr. Shemanski’s call for baseball prospectives. was enthusiastically received, and it looks as though the Royal Nine + are headed for a good season.
