He acts as supervisor and directs the athletic department. PRIESTS BUILD SCHOOL SPIRIT ■ Pius has become the best due to Father Joseph de Maria ' s unending efforts. Father is the superintendent of Pius. r 6 1 PIUS’S STRENGTH IS IN ITS PRINCIPAL I One of the per¬ sons responsible for the growth and fame of Pius XI High school over the past years is Sister M. Beatrix, principal of the school and friend and advisor for the students. Through her guidance, boys and girls have be¬ come me n and women, and her work will leave a lasting impression. The students of Pius XI High School are privileged with the very best administration any school could ever hope for. Under the direction of Father Joseph de Maria, Father McCall, and Sister Beatrix, Pius has become out¬ standing in its efforts to produce future Christian men and women. Sister Beatrix has sacrificed her years at Pius in guiding many students out of trou¬ ble and confusion. Father Joe, with his big heart, has helped to build a school every student will always be proud of. Father McCall continues to develop athletes and men through his guidance and easy manner. This administration is tops in our book. %ai e±. a Hmwi ol H Sister Sebaldus and Mr. Gosling seem to find a lot of common interest in discuss¬ ing chemistry. Are they guilty of concoct¬ ing those new formulae? I English teachers Sister Pacis and Sister, Georgine, advisors to the annual and Jour¬ nal Staffs, check copy and seem to find it humorous. Not a student in sight to rewrite A J? I Sister P u 1 c h e r i a , language teacher, Consolata, Spanish teacher. Sister Anthony, algebra teacher, find the faculty lounge a good place to correct homework and to chit¬ chat. I ■ And there they go, around the turn I Mr. Gro¬ ver, social studies teacher, is in the lead as he races Mr. Medicus, Latin teacher, to the gym to coach the freshmen after a faculty meeting. Skipping eighth period are Sisters Jacqueline and de la Salle, Sodality and Student Council moderators. (Getting away from it all ?) In spare moments o ister Jacqueline teaches bookkeeping y and English 3 and Sister de la Salle, sci¬ ence. ■ Fiddlers Three, are from left to right Sisters Casimir, Eustelle, and Maria Therese of our outstanding music de¬ partment. ■? H One of those dreaded voices that calls students over the P. A. is Sister Ambrose, who is also a co-advisor of the Braille club with Sister Terence, English teacher. H Sisters, you don ' t drink the paint I Art¬ ist Sister Anne sees to it that Sister Justine, art and math teacher, keeps the art equip¬ ment clean. I Say, your foot belongs on the floor, and not on the chair 1 Dis¬ cussing a new map are history teach¬ ers Mr. Whelan, Sister Regina, and Mr. Bertucci. ■ Mr. Gracyalny, Mr. Basile, and Mr. Peloquin, shop teachers, com¬ pare plans with a finished product. Result: a new pulpit. ■ Sister Judine, dramatics teach¬ er, tests her voice on a new tape re¬ corder and distracts Sister Clotildis from a record album for her senior English classes. n c . I Sister Englemunda, and Sister Adeline, librarians, double check a book card to a- void difficulties in circulation. H Browbeating, two innocent fac¬ ulty members, Miss Kelly (English 3 and conservation) and Sister Vin- centella (home ec) is Mr. Riegert, (guidance) in his usualroleas school ogre. ■ Say, Sister, all those books aren ' t going to fit in that little space. Sister Bernadin and Sis¬ ter Stephen Mary return English, books to their proper place. ■ Getting ready to lea ve after their religion classes are Fathers Schmidt and Brady. . ■ Miss Reiff, art and math teacher, enter¬ tains Miss Henke, girls’gym teacher and Mrs. Engelhard, social science teacher, between classes. I Oh, this smiling gets me, says Sister Adelma, social science teacher, as she, with Sister Theo- dine and Sister Austin, fellow social science teachers, reviews the film strip for tomorrow ' s class. H And there you are, says Sis¬ ter Pancratia, social studies teacher, to Sister Adeleida, commercial teacher. They are the moderators of the Third Order and Poverell Club, respectively. ■ Father Beitzinger has a welcome smile for Pius students as he opens the door of the Saint Aloysius rectory. He’s a sophomore religion teacher. fl Sister, don ' t you know that is un¬ sportsmanlike? Biologists Mr. Drexler, Sister Celia and Mr. Dressier go fish¬ ing. fl Sister Nicoline and Sister Antonius, business teachers, run off a test on the fluid duplicator. ■ Sister Samuella and Sister Alta, geometry teachers, get together to talk over some new angles before geometry class. I Father Jarosch heard that joke before, Father Wolf. Both are re¬ ligion teachers while Father Storch teaches driving. H These nut crackers sweet” are the Sisters who take care of the rest of the Sisters: Sister Gontrudis, Sis¬ ter Auxentia, and Sister Theodo- rette. ■ Don ' t make it too difficult 1 Preparing a religion test, Father Witkowski diligently bat¬ ters away at his typewriter. H One for you, two for me Sister Emmanuela and Sister Petronelle choose movies for their English classes. I Caught in the actl Sister Timothea scolds Sister Therista (religion etc.) and Sister Sebas¬ tian (Latin teacher) for raiding the snack bar. I The main power house behind our boys on the field and on the floor are our coaches Maurice McMahon and James Brennan. M And ther e he is I Sure you are, Father Basteyns. Father makes with a little George Gobel while Father Zwadzick telephones and Father Albers listens in. Father Brahm, Father Schmelzer, Father Johnson, and Father Schmitz, religion teachers, stop to have a chat before they leave school. 110401 Sections fold tile, ' Pow i tyoatil ■ Hey, Gunner, don’t bite your lip. A VARSITY DROPS ANCHO This football season of 1954 started like a race of swift sailboats. The Pius sloop, a swift craft, began strong, brushing past its first challenger, De La Salle, a craft manned by 11 strong Chicagoans. Next to fight it out was a s ma I I e r boat called Memorial of Waukes¬ ha . Though the size of the craft was small, they put up a good fight until Guenther Ruehle gathered in the air from their sails a pass, good for a touchdown. The sails were slack, but then a stiff wind blew up. St. Cather¬ ine ' s, a boat which had tra¬ veled long and hard last year to win the championship in a photofinish with Don Bosco, B Lounging above, from left to right, are the school ' s coaches, Mr. McMahon and Mr. J. Don Bosco rose out of the fog and rolled with the waves and wind to smash Pius ' s mighty stern. The sloop, as it sank, began to slump with but five yards to go. I Don W a h n and Pete Arena pave the way for Jerry Weber on the longest quarterback sneak of the year. The highly rated De La Salle team of Chicago had a sad trip home after absorbing a 20 to 12 de¬ feat at the hands of the Popes. ■ Somebody missed his man: Roger Anderson, after grinding out needed yardage, pleads for help from Bob Smith, who is willing but not able. Pius went on to cop its second straight victory over the previously unbeatable Junior Hilltoppers. ■ Pat Frigerio, George (Root) Hackle, and Don Wahn converge on T edBrzenk’s at¬ tempted quarterback sneak. Guess what? Don bit his tongue. ■ Gunner Ruehle, another reason for our big victory over Marquette, snares a pass from Jerry Weber and digs out more needed yardage. Bob Smith and Jack Galligan are busy blocking out opposing players? ■ Jerry Weber, Pius field general, gleams after the perfect call; Bob Ber- kopec goes into the end zone scoring that all important touchdown against Marquette. That’s the motion we like to see, Ref. Red Dog J ohnson , your profile isn ' t showing. That acute angle to the left ( 53 )is Pete Arena anchored by Ralph Johnson ' s arm. Patty cake!
