lessors who were dedi- cated to creating a new Icind of sctiool, PItzer al- lows students to plan their own lives and futures. This year, more than ever, Pitzer students are proving that they are in charge of their own lives. Pitzer stu- dents now have self-gover- nance and we are proving that we are up to the chal- lenge. Pitzer students work to make sure that their community is the best that it can be. We are con- cerned not only with our own area, but the world around us as a whole, in- volving ourselves in such issues as South African apartheid, events in Nica- ragua, and Soviet Refusen- iks. We are all individuals, experiencing the world for ourselves, and it is how we band together to form a college which makes Pitzer such a unique place. I Contents: Student life Sports? Orientation ' ' ■ In the true spirit ot Pitzer, the 1988-1989 orientation was built on the theme of the individual and the community. Along with the usual processes of advisor, resident advisor, and mentor meetings, orientation offered many exciting events. Unlike previous years, this orientation focused on various issues as opposed to one specific topic. The film Cry Freedom addressed the issue of apartheid in South Africa. Other issues included the Pitzer education, surviving at college, and the current date rape phenomenon. In a picnic with faculty members, students were able to express their views, hopes, and fears about the college. At the five- college game night and dance, new students were able to mingle with other new students throughout the Claremont colleges. Orientation was judged by all to be a success as new Pitzer students were welcomed into our community.
