PAct J The newly formed Pitzer Activities office has coordinated various events for the entire Pitzer community. Such ac- tivities include hikes, a viewing of a situation comedy, and a trip to the Shubert theater to watch Les Misera- bles. PAct was set up at the beginning of the 1988-1989 school year to fill a gap in both the lives of students and faculty for entertaining, non-academic stimulus. A large aspect of Pitzer activities is which in turn, integrate the community. One of PAct ' s biggest successes has been the trip to see Les Miserables. All available tickets to this event were taken, necessitating a waiting list for more tickets. In- deed, the demand for tickets was so great that another trip to see the play was organized. Another success for PAct is seen in the trip to see the situation comedy ' Dear John ' . A number of students trav- elled to NBC studios in Los Angeles for the first time. This gave them a better idea of what happens behind the scenes of an actual television show taping. Pitzer activities shares an office with the Escort Service and is highly accessible to students. Its philosophy ac- cording to Cris Freeberg is, to do anything (event) that the students would enjoy doing. Mr. Freeberg has served as part-time PAct coordinator and Sanborn Hall Director, but foresees the need for a full time PAct admin- istrator. The Pitzer activities office coordinates, funds, and co- sponsors many affairs at Pitzer and the greater commu- nities. The office also provides logistical support for stu- dent groups that need assistance in executing various events. The PAct staff consists of Freeberg and nine work-study students who plan events, schedule the Pitzer vans, and check out such items as camping and sports equipment. The group also publicizes upcoming events, and maintains a sign-up table in McConnell dur- ing meals. Freeberg feels that with the right input and energy, we can pull of many exciting and interesting experiences. r I 12

Things are looking up Pitzer has been changing- physically. Most of the alterations were part of the Campus Renovation Program adopted by the college in 1986. They may have caused you some annoyance during the year, but they were well worth the trouble. The changes include major rehabilitation of existing facilities and relocation of administrative faculty offices as well as a new elevator built between Avery and Fletcher Halls. The renovation of the Mead Reading Room was completed before the fall semester started, thank goodness, and the renova- tion of the Grove House kitchen was done in the fall. Construction of the new elevator between Avery and Fletcher unfortunately lagged, but once com- pleted in the spring, it gave access for the handi- capped to offices and classrooms on the second floors of Avery, Fletcher, Scott, and Bernard Halls. The new, comfortable interior, the file cabinets for reserve readings and the additional bookshelves for resource books in Mead ' s newly remodeled Reading room makes it a great place to study. Now students can study in the relative luxury of the dorm without trudging to Honnold Library for a quiet place to study. The rehabilitation of the Grove House Kitchen en- ables the Grove House to be used as a full scale restaurant. Staffed and run by Pitzer students. It opened for full operation during the spring. A change on a sister campus that will also affect Pitzer student life is the new Memorial Gym at Pomo- na. It is part of a three million dollar plan to better the athletic facilities provided for the students of both Pitzer and Pomona. The gym, scheduled to be finished at the end of the spring semester, will con- sist of a main gym large enough for three basketball courts, racquetball courts, a weight room, and a training room, as well as administra- tive offices. The old Memorial Gym will become a practice facility. The student body as a whole will benefit by these great facilities for intramural and intercollegiate activities. Things are looking up at Pitzer! IttlfiU iSMHa 11
