From the time we first scurried dazedly through these halls to this moment, there is not one fraction of a second we now regret. Our class, indeed, has much of which to be proud. It has contributed to the fields of sport, scholarship, and social activities. During our freshman year we took a hike to Clearwater Lake, in order to give our own version of “1 he Lady of the Lake.’’ That same year, we went through the printing plant of the Danville “Bee” and “Register” where we learn- ed something about the process of printing a newspaper. Another hike was taken to the Experiment Station to see how tobacco ought to be grown. Our sophomore year brought a tightening of the bonds that bind us to our Alma Mater. That year many of our class members took part in the operetta, “Singer of Naples,” which was directed by Mrs. Jesse Patterson Read. Our class was well represented in the Chatham Glee Club which sang at the State Music Con ention in Richmond, and broadcast over station WRVA. In the spring we had a delightful picnic at Green Rock. The Junior year brought more glory to our class. Raymond Johnson and Kelly Earles became outstanding members of the boy’s athletic teams, while Rachel Edwards, Myrtle Giles, Lois Amos, and Vivian Roach won places on the girls’ teams. A delightful picnic was given by the Juniors at a local lake. The Home Economic girls entertained Governor James H. Price, which was the out- standing social event of the year. A most successful operetta, “The Mikado,” vVas given during the year, under the direction of Miss Alice Shepherd. Now, the climax, the crowning glory! We reached the status of dignified Seniors. We selected our class officers, with Clyde East as President; bal ' oted for the annual staff, headed by Jack Bruce; and chose our now proud possessions, the class ring. Melvin Giles and Juanita Easley represented our class in the Stu- dent Council. Our school paper, the Primer was organized a: d under the able leadership of Clyde East, its editor, has become one of the most important student activities. We have tried to contribute our part to the extra-curricular activities, and we sincerely hope that when we leave this school for the last time as an organized body that we will have done our bit to impart something lasting and constructive to the foundation of our fast progressing Alma Mater. The Class of 40 marches on! 15 Mary Jo Anderson. All the students of the senior class leave their love and everlasting gratitude to all of the faculty for their kind guidance through the past four years. — Asa T. Jones THE PITT OF NINETEEN FORTY PROPHECY Chatham, Virginia May 31, 1930 Dear Patsy Anne : — Do you remember May 31, 1 940, when we were wondering what our class- mates would be doing in 1950? I promised myself that I would find out in 1950 and tell you. During the past week, I have been tracing our classmates — I had great success in finding them and you will be happy to know that they are all very prosperous. Do you enjoy living in Connecticut? I see that you have achieved your high school ambition of not marrying a Southerner. ' ' l ou probably know that Lois Amos and Te Overbey are managering the Sport Shop in Chatham — business seems to be good. Henry Carter and his wife, who was formerly Elise Motley, are running a dude ranch in Arizona. It is a very exclusive place, because all the movie stars are going there to rest between pictures. Do you read Vernon Geyer’s cartoons which every Sunday appear in Jack Bruce’s world-renowned newspaper. The Morning Sun? Coleman Hall and his wife, Nancye Jane Davis, are living happily in Africa as missionaries. Lillian Alice is still trying to find out which is right — she or the world. David Hill is a lawyer — his brilliant speeches are winning case by case. Have you read the latest best-seller, “Come with the Sun,’ by Mary Frances Sours? We knew she would be successful. Asa Jones has retired. He married a millionairess and she died. Hazel Johnson is very happy. She is a telephone operator. Did you know that Ike Anderson is running the largest fertilizer plant in the south? His new brand of fertilizer smells like gardenias. The garden clubs of America say that it is the most useful invention of the year. Mary Jo and her husband are now taking their annual tour of the world. She says she can’t decide where she wants to live. Aren’t you glad that Clyde East is governor of Virginia? I heard that his wife, Lois Adams, is the ‘power behind the throne.’ 20 PITTSYLVANIA HIGH SCHOOL Georgia Jefferson is in the movies. Her innocent expression has the theatre- goers speechless. You probably know that both Hunter Simpson and Norma Thomas are famous in the musical world. They are now making a personal apppearance tour of England. Elizabeth Easley and Mildred Anderson are both married. Remember, I always told you that they were the domestic type. It seems that Myrtle Giles’ experience on the high school basketball team has helped her. She’s a physical education instructor at Sweet Briar. Vivian Walker is her able assistant. Lawrence Shelton is resting — why should he worry? He has a hard-working wife. Bertha Dodd and Margaret Giles are efficient stenographers. Rachel Edwards, her husband, and their children, are reclining on the beaches of Puerto Rica. Flora Cundiff and Agnes Ragsdale are co-owners of the new Dry Fork community hospital. Virginia Scruggs and Erma Yeatts are running Chatham’s “Modern Scientific Dairy.” Haile Gatewood is their adviser. Frank Motley and his wife, Virginia Ellerson, are f arming in South Caro- lina. I suppose you know that Melvin Giles is a movie director. After seeing Hedy LeMarr the third time he had to go to Hollywood. Raymond Johnson is coach of the Duke basketball team. They seem to be winning under his direction. Last, but not least, Kelly Earles is the toast of Broadway. His brilliant com- edy rolls them into the aisles. If you know what some of our other school-friends are doing, write and tell me. All my love, Jaunita Easeley. P. S. What am I doing? P. P. S. Resting — and incidentally. I’m not as absent-minded as I used to be. 21 THE PITT OF NINETEEN FORTY JUNIOR CLASS Lloyd Craddock OFFICERS Willie F. Davis President Secretary-Treasurer Helen Mundy Mr. G. B.
