A One exenmg durlng the latter part of May f1940J I fVaughan Walchj was putt1ng my desk 1n order and g1XlI'lg a few orders to the help when the offxce boy brought me a card saylng that a gentleman wlshed to see me at once The card lntro duced HAROLD L MEYER Nlatlonal Presldent of the Boy Scouts of Amerlca I was 1n a hurry to leave the of flce as I had been worklng smce earlv mornlng and wanted to get back to my apartment where I could rest and enjoy my hbrary of whlch I was xery proud I therefore hesltated but fl nally told the boy I would see Mr 'Xlever for a mmute You can lmag me my surprlse when I turned to greet thlS stranger and found hlm to be the classmate I had known so w ell at P1ttsv1lle Harold had come to Fast New York on a short buslness trlp and w as returnmg to h1s headquarters 1n the opposlte dxrectlon of the clty ln a 'ew days We began talk1ng and I d1d not reallze that It w as gett1nJ late untll Harold sald that he would haxe mght I told hlm that I 'N d 1 Icom for hlm We drove to my bachelor quar ters at 166 25 st where I ordered dm ner for two After dlnner we so yourned to my den and I turned on the 1ad1o hopmg to get some good muslc To our surprlse we heard W1ll1am O Ne1ll maklng statlon announce ments from WJZ New York W learned that B1ll had organlzed a com pany and would be g1v1ng regular weekly programs MIHHIG Walker was p1an1st for the company BIIIIHIG sur ely knew her muslc Harold and I began to talk over old tlmes and wondered where our classmates of 1930 were We knew from the papers that Blanche Rug gles and Edna Kumm w ere 1n Parls Blanche and Edna were ln buslness to ether as deslgners Blanche was responslble for deslgmng many of the latest stvle dresses and Edna helped select the materlals and held the re spon 1b1l1ty of advertlslng thelr crea IIOHS through the newspapers As Harold and I were both sport fans we knew that George Staffon was the new manager of the Chlcago Whlte Socks Also that Lawrence Ilk had acqulred the pos1t1on of head basketball coach at Marquette Unl xerslty Wllbur Waldo was owner of a larffe ch ese factorv near Vladlson Wllbur w as a noted cheese maker and h1 flne quallty cheese had won prlz es for h1m ln many of the forelgn countries as well as 1n the Unlted States Next tlme you see Wxlbur ask hlm to show you the basket of medals whlch he has recelved Whlle looklng over one of the mornmg papers Harold had read that .uth Lelser was running for gover nor of Texas If we lned ln Texas w would surely vote for Ruth It v as three o clock when Harold and I fmally retlred The next day heme' Sunday we did not get up Lllltll nearly noon As It w as too late to 0 to church we had lunch and then went for a drn We reached the cu sklrts of the c1ty about two thlrty and w ev e drnlng past a church w hen the bell ln the tee-ple began to rmg Harold sald theres a church that holds serxlces ln the afternoon let s attend We w ent to church that day after rr' rf' rf 'I' r ' Page 19 J X' 1 IJ l ll L, au' 4 I ' y , . . , , . . . . 1 ' y ' fr 1 1 ' Q , .y . Harold sald that he would have to begm attendmg to hxs buslness I had work at the offlce and told hlm to meet me about flve p m and we would go out for the evenlng That n1ght Harold came to the offlce and we went down town for dlllllel' Later we went to a theatre on Broadway Beaster and Company were entertalmng We were surprxs ed to see Carl Beaster as leading ac zer After the enterta1nment we saw them IH person Carl sald that our next meetlng would probably be ln PlttSX1Il9 I found out what Carl meant by thxs statement the next dav 1TuesdayJ when I recelved a let ter from Avls Brown Plttsx 1lle Avls 1l'lX1ted me to attend a class reumon the comlng Saturday Aus slgned her name as Mrs George K Phlhps Wednesday Harold and I w nt down to one of the flymg flelds to arrange for passage to Plttsx llle Ed ward Zuehlke was manager of the alrport and was as surprlsed to see us as we were to see hlm Ed mform ed us that he w as flymg to Plttsx 1lle Frxdav and that we mlght go wlth Page 20 h1m We told hlm of our meetmg wlth Alvm Cora Carl and Bermce and he sald that they could go wxth us also Frlday mornlng Harold and I al ose early and went down to the alr port Alv1n and Cora were already there but Carl and Bermce had left for Plttsvllle before Ed had t1r1 to see them We flew all day Frvday and Frlday nlght arrlvlng 1n Pltts vllle late Saturday mornlng Pltts vllle had a nlce alrport and a new ho tel We went to the hotel and werc surprlsed to fmd that It was manag ed by Av1s and her husband Mr Phil llps They had named the new bulld lng Hotel Belva ln honor of Avls s Aunt Belva All twenty four members of our class of 1930 were preesnt at the re unlon Natlonal as well as mterna tlonal passenger servlce by alr was good and most of the class had come by alrplane I had the opportunlty to have a personal talk wlth them all and found out where they we e lo cated structor of the Wausau Busm ss In stltute Amanda llked thls kmd of work and was very successful shown by the very large number of very efflclent students who graduat ed under her lnstructlon Harrlet Tague was teachlng shorthand and typmg nn the Wlscon son Raplds high school Durm the summer months Harrlet usually fmds work ln some 0fflCe or store Irma Hmrlchsen was teachlng m '1 new mstxtutlon for learnm located near ChlC3 O Thls lnstltutlon teach es a course IH marrla e It educates on the dutles of a good husband or wlfe Irma said that she was thlnk mg seriously of gettmg marrled The ' 7 I Y U A - . .
