Freshmen Sophomores r ? Freshman History September 7, 1952, marked the entrance of a new Freshman class into the portals of Pittston High School. Although shy, their aims were high. Many privileges not previously enjoyed were offered to them. Extra-curricular ac- tivities provided many new interests. Upperclassmen helped pave the way by invitations to dances and scholastic games. From this timid Freshman group emerged a number of future athletes, majorettes, future journalists, and spirited cheerleaders. This Freshman class which was shy going in is coming out as one of the most talented classes and the most willing supporters of all school functions. They hope that when they graduate in 1956 they will have grown through their years of high school into one of the most skillful classes ever to graduate from the portals of Pittston High School. Lorraine Sobol Sophomore History We, the Sophomore Class of '53, passed through the portals of Junior High School and entered Senior High School with anticipation on September 3, 1952. After we were well established with the help of our teachers and upper- classmen, we became interested in extra-curricular activities through which we could develop our specific abilities. Those interested in journalism became members of the Press Club which is under the supervision of Mr. C. William McNulty. They developed their writing techniques by contributing articles for the five issues of the Revealer which proved to be successful. Classmen with musical inclinations became members of the Senior Band and Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Edward Venzel. In our annual con- cert, which was held on May 6th, 7th and 8th, they rendered musical selections comparable to advanced musical units. The bulletin boards in our halls were finely decorated throughout the year with posters and drawings made by talented members of the Art Club directed by Miss Mary Barrett. The Mechanical Drawing Club, also under her directic n, prepared for future positions in the field of engineering. Many of our classmates became affiliated with the Letterman's Club through the participation in athletics on the gridiron, baseball field or basket- ball court. Cheering their fellow classmates on .to many victories, were talented Soph- omores who were members of the cheering squad. The football season would not be complete without the twirls and classy drills of Sophomore majorettes who also performed at parades and the annual concert. As our Sophomore year comes to an end, we, the Class of '55, wish to ex- press our gratitude to the members of the faculty and to the members of the Junior and Senior Classes for helping us make this year one of fondest mem- ories. Priscilla Calabro, Mary Powers, Bernice Scalonge. 32 Juniors v Q,. ,, ,Q M Junior History Last year we were wise fools but this year we considered ourselves wise young men and women. A certain change seemed to pass over us during the summer months. We found ourselves a little bit older, a little bit taller and a lot wiser by far. We learned that in order to succeed we must have stable be- ginnings and those beginnings can be found only through study. The majority of us took our subjects more seriously. Of course, there are always a few strag- lers but most of us got down to brass tacksf' We were determined to have the Junior Class of 1953 remembered always in the history of P. H. S. I -V M I - in Great things were happening during the fall season. Our class was well represented on the football squad, in the band, and on the twirling team. Our cheerleaders were a credit. We found that we were having a wonderful time at the football games as well as in the class-rooms. We welcomed the Thanksgiving vacation, but refused to forget the fond memories of the gridiron. With winter came sleighing, ice skating, a few dances, Christmas and the New Year. The boys of the class, incidentally, were better supporters of the dances this year. Naturally, we all enjoyed mid-winter vacations but we came back in January to face mid-year exams. With our marks safely stowed away in the records, we wound up the Winter season with a bang-up dance in Feb- ruary. It was the biggest of the season and we turned the money over to the Senior Yearbook Fund. There is a certain interlude which comes between Winter and Spring when time seems to drag. However, our basketball team with several Juniors as members, filled in with many an exciting game on the basketball court. Then came Spring and all its glory! Out for Easter and the quarter exams over, was a pleasant prospect indeed. Then came the Vocational Guidance Clinic where we were helped to decide upon the career best suited for us. After that-well, it was May and we were all looking forward to the fun we'd have at our weekly record dances. There-almost June. In fact the next big events were our annual concert and then our colossal Junior Prom. At the Prom we bade farewell to some of the best friends we ever knewaeour beloved Senior Class. Goodbye to friend and foe, but we certainly would miss them. We were quite sad after the plan- ning, glitter and success of the Prom was at an end. Graduation and then nothing more. But here we gofout of the Doldrums! A stupendous thought just occurred to us-we're going to be next year's Seniors! Elizabeth M. J. Twelve years ago you entered into these portals, young, impetuous children and unaware of what the future had in store for you. And here within these sacred walls you have passed the hap- piest days of your lives. Many were the hours of toil that you have spent in these classrooms, and we feel sure that it is with regret that you now say good- bye. You have aided us much in the years we have followed behind you and we will miss you. Our corridors were always filled with your smiling faces and your helping hands. When we were confused or troubled with the questions of underclassmen you were ready to lend your valuable advice and it was al- ways cherished. These are the little things that have made us love you and sorry to say good-bye when you leave these gates of happiness. We now must move a step ahead and replace you as the upperclassmen of your Alma Mater. We only hope that the inheritance of your honorable character and pleasing personality shall be ours. May we acquire the respect that you have gained throughout the years. Now, as you leave, bidding farewell to all your teachers and classmates, not knowing when you will have the opportunity of being with them again, you also leave the joyousness of youth, for you are now men and women who must mingle in the world of strife. Father Time is pointing his finger to where your future labor calls. If you would accept it we would like to offer our humble advice-always be as honorable as you have been and keep the pleasant mannerisms which you have exhibited in your years with us. We hope you meet with success by leading a good, upright life. Be always true to your Alma Mater and stand as a loyal band pledging allegiance to your country. Farewell-dear graduates! Barbara Santi 48 ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES Our three teams have upheld the tradition of our school although we did not win any league or conference championships. Our basketball team, however, did defeat Central Catholic, formerly St. John's, two out of three, for the mythical championship of the city. Results of games played by our football team, coached by Mr. Cyril Gallagher, with Mr. Joseph Sobeski as assistant, show we won five out of ten Lgames. Ford Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith Senior Class C43 Farewell Classmates As the day of graduation draws near, and we look back on our school years, our hearts grow sad. We are about to depart from everything that has made up our lives for the last twelve years. To our teachers and classmates, we say, Farewell We shall miss the kindness, patience, and understanding of our faculty and the smiling faces and cheerful voices of our classmates. We are leaving a part of our life that can live again only in our memories. The encouragement and guidance given to us by our teachers will always re- main with us. We, the Senior Class of 1953, have always tried to do our best. Our efforts have always been appreciated by our teachers. The Juniors must now carry on for us. We hope that they will do their utmost to succeed in all tasks which they may undertake. We are leaving, but as we go on our way, we will try to bring honor and glory to our Alma Mater. So, now, thankful for the guidance we have received over the years, we say to all, Farewell.
