Looking into the future we see it as something remote, even mysterious. As we try to visualize what lies ahead we picture a time and situation which will sim- ply come; a life which is handed to us with little ef- fort on our part. Often the future seems alien to the present. Yet each of us is constantly shaping his own future. It is made up of our expectations, dreams, goals, visions. Although we see the future as a far distant time we must remember that today is yesterday’s fu- ture. In order to build the future that we want for our- selves we must be aware of what we want and how we can go about achieving it—now, today. The yearbook staff has chosen five qualities which it feels are important for us to develop as we form the pattern of our future lives. The importance and inten- sity of each quality will vary according to the individ- val. It is this variation which makes the life of every person a unique experience. Awareness adds depth and perspective to life. In high school we ‘begin to become aware of the position of our lives in history, to understand the miracle of mod- ern science, to comprehend great ideas through it- erature. A sense of awareness takes our knowledge out of a vacuum and enables us to relate this knowl- edge with sensitivity to life’s experiences as we meet them. In our society we are given maximum opportunity to search for our own identity. We can make the best use of what life offers us only by knowing what we want and of what we are capable. As we grow to know ourselves and act on this self-knowledge our lives become uniquely our own. Our search for iden- tity brings us close to the heart of our lives. Achievement gives purpose to our lives. In order to achieve we must perceive clearly our goals and have the strength of desire to work toward them. Because we, in Pittsford, have many opportunities, such as education and cultural background, we have an ob- ligation to achieve in higher measure. A feeling of adventure is an attitude, a spirit. We have this feeling now because we are stepping into a new phase of the future, which is largely unknown. But we must keep this feeling always. because there will always be new doors to open and new fields to explore. As long as we realize that the future brings new experiences and new meanings we can keep alive the spirit of adventure. The quality which is a combination of the other four is maturity. A person is never entirely mature but must continue to grow throughout life. Maturity is gained by learning from each experience that life offers us. As we look into our own private visions of the future we can contemplate how to make the lives that we want for ourselves. We stand before an important threshold of life. What we make of the future de- pends on ourselves. aa ceesimnouteaetccasesey a sa RN paren eumsedegaroore ree: unre icxy vancuone ee Sich ccammen Mes % Soneenenon oan ee i é i = 2 MATURITY Maturity is gained by learning from each experience that life offers us. Board of Education The Education Law of New York State places upon the Board of Education the responsibility to “establish rules and regulations concerning the order and discipline of the schools, prescribe the course of study and to have in all re- spects the superintendence, management and control of the educational af- fairs of the district.” In the pursuit of its duties this year the Board has heard instructional reports from various school departments, planned the Park Road School which will open in September and more recently has announced a long range plan for the continued orderly growth of the school district. Our class wishes to commend the members of the Board of Education for their unselfish efforts in behalf of the students of Pittsford. OR sie Dear Class of 1965 During the last decade each succeeding senior class has been the largest to graduate from Pittsford High School. The Class of 1965 is no exception. Your 225 members indi- cate not only size but numerous contributions to our school. Excellence has been shown in all fields of endeavor, running the gamut from pure academics to student government. | have been pleased particularly with the strong leadership that you have given to other students. In addition, your stability and good spirit are worthy of emulation. In our open, democratic society there often is the temptation to be overly concerned with privileges and rights as contrasted with responsibilities. The class of 1965 has shown to others a real sense of responsibility throughout high school. Even though a small segment of your generation, you can be very effective in helping to mold a mature world. Do this by continuing to exemplify good stability, spirit, and responsibility. May full success be yours in the future. Arnold T. Carlson 32 Barbara Lockwood Heidi Van Arsdell sam King C. J. It provides a valua- ble opportunity to learn about other people. We have had a wonderful time and have become aware of what a tremendous program the American Field Service offers. Not only do we recognize that through the program we enjoyed fun and friendship, but it also offered us a chance to tell others something of American life and to give U. S. stu- dents a better idea of other cultures. Through this experience we hope to help in making a better world. | We are sincerely thankful to all those who made our visits successful. Our AFS scholar- ships have given us a truly unique experience and we hope that in the near future you might enjoy a similar one. It will probably be one of the most important decisions you will be called upon to make. Fortun- ately, you live in a land where freedom of choice and opportunity are almost unlimited. Of course, anyone's ‘‘first job’’ is to get his basic education. Congratulations to you who get this job well done. Now, how about the next step? Career opportunities in Rochester, with its many and diverse industries, com- mercial organizations and professions, should interest almost any student. Most Rocheste r companies are recognized for their high standards and advanced technology. It follows that standards for employment are high too—and a good education tops the list. An employer knows what kinds of people he is looking for. The student ready | for a career should have an equally good idea of what he or she is looking for. Consulting with parents, counselors, friends, and with employers them- selves will reveal what kinds of positions are available in what kinds of organ- izations. Evaluating your abilities and appraising your readiness for the career of your choice is the key to your future. There is no door it cannot unlock—when_ the key fits!
