Not one of us can easily forget The burning in our hearts, the searing pain That camo with those few terse and dreadful words. America at war! We scarce conceived The full import of this soul-stirring news. lt seemed so terrible and sad to our young minds. Our troubled eyes looked to the Christmas stars, For they alone remained serene and bright Above the black and angry smoke of war. The enemy had caught us unawares, And so, during the first few months ol' war, Our nation worked with lightning, frantic speed To keep the enemy from oil our shores. At Pittsiield liigh, our air raid drills began: And many teachers joined a first aid class: The Household Arts girls sewed on ehildren's clothes To help the lied Cross in its nlerey missions: .-Xnd with a zeal to us before unknown, We gave our time and strength to salvage drives.
