Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1980 volume:

v-i 1980 SAUKEE Pittsfield High School Pittsfield, Illinois Volume 42 IN MEMORY Along with all the happy memories, we will remember the sad ones too because without the sad memories, there are no happy ones. It is hard to understand why death must come so suddenly to those who are young. It is easier to accept the death of an older person because he has lived a full life, but we begin to ask why when death takes those whose lives have just begun and whose futures hold so much promise. We will hurt, but we can’t let this hurt turn into bitterness. We must go on living, learning, and loving, and soon the hurt will lessen and wisdom will take its place. As Robin and Lila’s friends, relatives, and classmates, many of us were very close to them and knew them in all of their moods. We remember the happy moments and the crazy moments. We remember the special times and the sad times. Because of these memories and because of Robin and Lila’s lives, our lives are richer and fuller. AFTERTHOUGHT When I walked into the Saukee office today To finish the annual and send it on its way These are the thoughts that filled my mind: How can an editor get so far behind? In September the deadline seemed far away Now the time is gone and it's the last day. There are ads to be written, pictures arranged. The editorial really ought to be changed. In all this confusion the phone will ring The annual copy they want me now to bring. I ask for more time my task to complete Then they remind me there's a deadline to meet. So I put it all together, I gave it my best I hope as you read it, it passes your test. I send it forth with a tiny little prayer That this edition is as good as last year’s. Teresa Moss Warren Holloway As I finish my senior year and the 1980 Saukee annual, I want to express my thanks to the annual staff, the student body, and the teachers of Pittsfield High for their time and cooperation. Crystal Long, Debbie Willard, and Martha Schiieper, who were the assistant editor, layout editor, and the copy editor respectively, deserve a special thanks. Our sponsor Mrs. Durall has stood behind me, given me ideas, and been patient with me this year, and I want to thank her for her support. Finally, I want to wish the senior class of 1980 and the senior class of 1981 the best of luck in the future. Cheryl Burlend Editor MEMORIES Sometimes when death comes to someone we love, although we are sad and we miss them, we are in another sense happy because we no longer must watch them suffer and hurt knowing there is nothing we can do to help them or relieve their pain. We can remember them as they once were and know they are not suffering this way any more. We want to dedicate this page to the memory of Mrs. Claus, Nancy Lagemann, and Mr. Petty and offer our sympathy to their families. SCHOOL BOARD Row I, left to right: Chuck Seybold. The past four years have been memorable ones. We put in many hours of hard work, but all the good times made it worthwhile. Our senior class officers were Judy Lowe, president; Krissie Haskins, vice-president; Robin Malcomson, secretary; Bill Myers, treasurer; and Janice Reeder, asst, vice-president. Our tremendous finances were the result of magazine, T-shirt, and candy sales. Our original, if not beautiful. Homecoming float followed our class’s tradition of placing no higher than 3rd place. The 1979 Homecoming Queen was Gail Gleckler and her senior attendants were Debbie Loutzenhiser, Judy Lowe, Robin Malcomson, Janine Maxwell, Dana McConnell, Jill Niebur, and Julie Hammitt, honorary attendant. In the Student Council, the class of '80 was represented by Roseann Davis, president, Lisa Burbridge, Rich Ellis, Tracey Halpin, Julie Hammitt, and Gregg Ratliff. This year we were privileged to have seven fine senior cheerleaders. These were Linda Booth, Jackie Dale, Jill Frazier, Gail Gleckler, Debbie Loutzenhiser, Janice Reeder, and Traci Yonikus. Also the senior Saukettes were Valerie Carlton, Mary Ward, Nancy Ward, and Nancy Jane Grimes, their hardworking leader. We couldn’t be prouder of our senior basketball players who brought fame to our class and all of Pittsfield by going to the state tournament. They were Bill Cummings, Terry Leahr, Don Newman, Doug Newman, Joe Petty, Gregg Ratliff, and Tracy Shelton. Winners of the DAR and SAR awards were respectively Julie Hammitt and Rich Ellis. Danforth Foundation Awards went to Judy Lowe and Joe Petty. A million thanks to Mr. Johnson for his advice, and hard work and for putting up with us. We would also like to wish the best of luck to the seniors of 1981 and we hope that all future classes enjoy their high school years as much as the class of ’80 has. 18 JtbJL %JLLasrr fcrn . We did have the misfortune of being there the same weekend as Governor Teasdale, so we were a little closer to everybody than we had planned. All in all, everyone had a good time — some a little more than others! Let no one say that the class of 80” was quiet during their stay in the Ozarks! To the class of 81” — Good Luck! 37 0-Y OjO nil +lk ,' r, f5ujjc ex . mXioCt.. yfJU U. uHjl u W : u 4.'tK jeuud'tsn tk -jao-at.. to IjuOuYy. 0-rx. , bj: 0 m £7t n. (yrxX Jti -A. Our junior class officers were Jennifer Smith, president; Lori Harter, vice-president; Cindy Crater, asst, vice-president; Crystal Long, secretary; and Mark Hatton, treasurer. We started off the year with the usual fight to stay above water — the famous dunking stand. Our next smashing project was selling the candy bars that can melt in your hands. We were represented in the Student Council by the sensational six,” Scott Andress, Brad Smith, Becky Hilgedick, Susan Willard, Jackie Miller, and Ann Long. A deserving applause goes to Scott who became temporary president. Although our flubberized float came in third, this year’s Homecoming attendants, Lori Baughman and Sarah Gerard, did a very nice job. Our three junior cheerleaders, Annita Lane, Phyllis Hoover, and Tammy Shepherd, back-aerialed” our Saukees to the meeting of the Elite Eight at Champaign. We also had many valuable juniors playing on the Saukee team. The 1980 Prom queen was Sarah Gerard, escorted by Brad Smith. Her court consisted of Melanie Anders, escorted by Shawn O’Brien; Lori Baughman, escorted by Ron Rush; Lori Harter, escorted by Scott Andress-, and Tammy Shepherd, escorted by Terry Haskins. The theme for Prom this year was OZ. Starry-eye” provided our music. We would like to thank our advisors, Gary Woods and Richard Feezel, for all of the extra time they spent on making our year a success. 40 Missy Acuff Beanita Adams Diana Allen Melanie Anders Scott Andress Brent Bauer Gary Baughman Lori Baughman Terry Borrowman Sandra Brown Everett Bugg Alinda Burbridge Danny Burnett Rhonda Burnett Teresa Burton Ron Carter Merlin Clendenny Greg Collard Tim Craft Cindy Crater Marcia Daniel Darla Dark Don Dark Lori Decker Terry DeJaynes Brenda Doyle Ann Duesterhaus Angela Dunham Alan Dyer Terry Eddington Mike Ehlert Penny Ervin Cathy Ferry Clay Flock Valerie Flock Kent Gallaher Sarah Gerard Donna Greening Tim Greenwood Shirley Grimsley Todd Halpin Lori Harter Terry Haskins Mark Hatton Gary Heightman Becky Hilgedick Phyllis Hoover Jeff Howland Earl Hull Susan Hyde 42 Donnie Jones Cindy Johnson Tom Johnson Jana Kern Jeana Kern Bill Kindle Troy Kingery Ron Korte Darlene Kramer Ron Labby Nancy Lagemann Annita Lane Gary Laux Elizabeth Lemons Sheila Lewis Ronda Little Ann Long Crystal Long Tina Malcomson Kevin Manard Rita Martin Jackie Miller Pat Miller Rusty Miller Tina Molnar Don Moore Becky Myers Bill McCartney James McDaniles Marsha McDonald Mary McDonald Janice McGlasson Marcia McKenna Gary McNulty Shawn O’Brien Tim Orr Lee Ottwell Robin Parsons Pam Pearson John Chris Petty Kay Pine Peggy Piper Dusty Poor Lori Ralph Jeff Ransom Laurie Reeder Brent Reel William Reel Curt Renoud Pam Roberts 44 Carol Rupert Bruce Rush Debbie Rush Ronnie Rush Vince Sanderson Mike Sargent Jim Shade Lori Shaw Tammy Shepherd Keela Shinn Dan Shireman Cam Simmons Brad Smith Jennifer Smith Marie Smith Sue Smith Rick Spann David Sperry Raymond Spoonmore Corinna Springer Chuck Stanley Pam Summers Pam Thrasher Sandra Triplett Lisa Wade Nancy Walston Steve Ward Becky Warren Sandy Wassell Mark Watts Kathy Weir Jael Wilkey Susan Willard Missy Williams Sandy Wintgen Tom Wombles Kenny Wooldridge Rod Wyckoff Pam Young Randy Zumwalt Rick Zumwalt No picture available for: Rich Butler Jeff Kepley Lason Leyerle Rosalie Masterson Mike Miller Charlie Pearson Sandy Waggoner Greg Webel Rusty Helm 46 47 Our sophomore year was a very successful one. This year's chorus held three concerts: our annual Christmas concert, a winter concert in March and a concert in May. Our Christmas concert was a great success, and Halleluiah Chorus” sounded much better than last year, thanks to the altos! Tracey Halpin was featured solo in Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Following our winter concert, we held a party for Mrs. Feldpausch since this would be her final concert for the year. Our spring concert was under the direction of Mrs. Kay Sealock because Mrs. Feldpausch was busy at home with little James. Tracey Halpin and Roseann Davis performed their contest duet, and the senior chorus members sang the two songs that would be sung at graduation. The entire chorus also performed for Baccalaureate. We had a very successful year at contest. All of our ensembles received a first rating, which is something to be really proud of. This yc4r, as in the past few years, the chorus earned money for our trip by selling oranges and grapefruit. We had planned to see The Who” in concert but weren't able to get good seats, so we decided to see A Chorus Line” at the American Theatre. S8 CHORUS First row: Kelly Cox. Ann Long. Karrie Graham. Dave Bennett The year 1979-1980 was a year to be remembered for the Saukee basketball team. For a small town like Pittsfield, going to state finals was a dream come true. All season Tracy Shelton, a senior, assisted the team with his high point scoring. Joe Petty, another senior, also did much for the team with his ball handling ability and shooting. The Newman twins, Don and Doug, were main factors in rebounding for the Saukees. Don played remarkably well, and his leadership provided the Saukees with added confidence. Doug, who was awarded Most Improved Player, did really well in the last half of the season. A newcomer to varsity, Terry Haskins, a junior, had a good free throw record and was an excellent defensive player. The rest of the team must be recognized for their support to their teammates and for the Saukee pride they exhibited. What is there left to say? Although the Saukees played an up and down season, they certainly ended on a positive note! To Mr. Bennett and Company, we take off our hats!
